I'm surprised to learn that the Jazz players and especially Coach Sloan had no idea who he was. He's been coaching there 20 years now, and he's never once seen President Monson or interacted with him like that before? Well I guess he knows them pretty well now. I'm sure that won't be the last time President Monson tries to do something like that.

WAY TO GO PRESIDENT MONSON!!! Your awesome.
wzfan | 3:04 a.m. March 29, 2008
I've noticed President Monson at Utah symphony performances sitting up front and enjoying the performance but this is the first time I knew what a Jazz fan he was.
He's a very humble and loving man. I wonder if he was close enough to hear sloan's language!!
lakers eat your heart out! our fans include celebrities who are civic and religious leaders not just movie stars and rappers showing up to be seen.
GO JAZZ!!!

Me thinks "sloadsshock" is a bit touchy.
While unusual, I would say that having a prominant local celebrity with near courtside seats pat Sloan on the back during half-time is hardly "CREEPY".
Having someone become as creeped out by it, as "sloanshock" clearly is, is CREEPY.

Yeah, I'm a member of the church and I agree that it comes across as strange at best, creepy at worst. Could have been the way the article was written though.

Sloansshock... If it's Mormon propaganda then quit reading it.
Evan | 6:37 a.m. March 29, 2008
Propaganda, excuse me !? Never fails when a positive article with regards to The Church appears that someone that is Anti LDS has to make a negative comment!
President Monson is showing not only is he currently The Lord's Prophet and President of The Church, but also shows he is a regular person that enjoys the simple pleasures of watching our Jazz play !
President Monson is indeed just as much as "the people's prophet" as President Hinckley was !

You're insane. Calm down. I don't see why you read "this mormon controlled paper" if you hate the LDS Church so much. Why is it that anytime anything "Mormon" is mentioned on any of the Utah newspapers the anti-LDS people feel they need to make their voice heard?
Last time I checked President Monson was human.

I bet a lot of fans were watching their language when screaming at the refs.
Re: sloanshock | 6:51 a.m. March 29, 2008
Actually, your comment is offensive, and thoroughly idiotic to boot. Why does President Monson's visit to a Jazz game freak you out?
Your use of the word "propaganda" shows that you haven't even the slightest clue what it means.
Want to know what's creepy? You and your anti-Mormonism. "Really weird."

First, go to bed.
Second, ya it might've been a little shocking but it was great to see a church leader in such a fun environment. We always see them in conference and stuff and it is was great to see them out of that environment and in the public.

To sloansshock... let me exercise some of my constitutional rights, about you. Your comments show how ignorant you are. You've never seen a celebrity at a Lakers or Knicks game get involved in the huddle??? You've never seen them get more involved than your average fan??? Your comment only shows what your true motivation is: being critical of the church and its leader, though you claim that you are commenting only on the "weird" situation of someone tapping on the coach's shoulder. Nothing about it was weird, especially if you know how friendly Pres. Monson is. Your comments were ignorant, biased, in poor taste, and were just plain dumb. Get a life.
Superfan | 7:03 a.m. March 29, 2008
I applaud President Monson for showing he's both a fan and member of our community. I saw him at the playoffs last year and I hope to see him at more games.
Relax sloansshock | 7:06 a.m. March 29, 2008
if anyone sounds completely offended it's you. Would you have written such a comment if this had been some Hollywood star, Gov Huntsman, or even a former Jazzman that Sloan still couldn't see, didn't know who they were til later, and got a little jumpy because of it?
On a different note, it's good to see the duo are able to take over a game if need be. Let's hope the whole team can keep this up as they leave home again for a bit.

Being seen in public settings is good. When will we see him helping in the soup line at the Salvation Army shelters?
Anonymous | 7:22 a.m. March 29, 2008
:) Nice article! Even at his age Pres.Monson likes to mingle and have some good fun, even though someone thinks he should be praying and reading scriptures all the day long...
valhas5 | 7:23 a.m. March 29, 2008
Sloansshock, ya know the Mormons were here in Utah long before you were. If it weren't for the Mormons there would be no Utah. You are welcome to leave anytime, if you don't like the way of life here, leave. No one is keeping you here. There always has to be someone rude like you to ruin a nice article which most people thought was cool that Pres. Monson was at the game.
jph1223 | 7:25 a.m. March 29, 2008
And sloanshoch, if the Deseret News reported that Pres. Monson was there but didn't interact with the players you would be complaining about how haughty he is. For you anti-Mormons the glass is always half empty. I'm glad I have a life.
Spurs Fan | 7:26 a.m. March 29, 2008
Does that mean you have to be a JAZZ fan if your going to Follow the Prophet??

Who cares! I don't know why I read any of this.
Wouldn't the money for their tickets be better served feeding and housing some poor kids in Africa who lost their Parents to Genicide or Aids?

Sloanshock, it's not a Mormon controlled paper, it s Mormon owned paper. Please get your facts straight. Though it was a little weird to come up to Coach Sloan during the game, it really wasn't a big deal. As for the constitution, this website is privately owned, which mean you don't have free-speech rights here. Neither do I. So before you go around preachin' about the constitution, you really should 1. read it 2. understand how it has been interpreted.

Sloansshock,
Wow dude - chill out. Is ESPN also producing "mormon controlled" propaganda? They had a blurb on ESPN.Com about it too. The fact is... This story is interesting to a lot of people. Unfortunately there will always be people like you that wig out every time there is a human interest story about the LDS church in... imagine that... Utah!
Go Monson!
Go Jazz!

The Constitution says that GOVERNMENT may not abridge free speech, so if the Deseret News were to remove your post it would have not affected your free speech or any other Constitutional rights. Private entities may abridge to their hearts content.
re: sloanshock | 8:04 a.m. March 29, 2008
no there's an informed response. This is a typical posting of someone with an axe to grind against the mormon church. What do you care anyway??

Trying to find something negative in the story must have taken some real effort on your part. As this is just a nice "feel good" story.
Good things can happen in life---don't try to ruin them when they do.

I'm deeply disturbed. Why can a religious celebrity think he's entitled to do what others can't?
If I did what this old man did, I'd be ejected from the building after interrogation.
Stay in the Billionaire Box, Mr. Monson, please.

re:sloansshock | 8:09 a.m. March 29, 2008
What are you talking about? I saw the interview and there was no feeling of CREEEPY. Your post is not offensive, dude...YOU'RE offensive!
Re: sloanshock | 8:09 a.m. March 29, 2008
Sloanshock-I think you got a little too excited about this simple act of friendliness. President Monson is a prominent figure in the nation and he was simply greeting the coach and players. By Boozer's comments did he seem too offended by it? Jerry Sloan said he was "fine" with it. Thanks to the Deseret Morning News for the article-I was hoping there would be an article on this.
Re Sloansshock | 8:18 a.m. March 29, 2008
Does that statement and the D-News allowing your ridiculous blog make you feel better? I hope so because I am a very critical Jazz fan and I for one think you are way out of bounds. Get a life bud. How do you feel about the rest of your life? Nice game Jazz, way to get to the point with these lower teams. Go Jazz.
Sloanshock | 8:22 a.m. March 29, 2008
I guarantee you if I had Lexus seats and walked right by the Jazz bench during a timeout, I would try to talk to one of them. Maybe even a high 5 or something, but I dont blame Sloan's reaction since his back was turned. Let me ask you a totally subjective question...If it were Lil' John who did the exact same thing last weekend, would it bug you so much?
re-sloanshock | 8:22 a.m. March 29, 2008
What a negative comment!! Just a fun article about something of interest in Utah!! If the Pope showed up to a game I would love to read the article about interactions with the crowd or team. Sloanshock needs to enjoy the atmosphere or find someplace else to live. It would stink living such a negative life as that!! RELAX

RE:Sloansshock
It is more a matter of perspective. You would probably have said nothing or praised someone else if it was someone you respected or someone you look up to. He looked nothing more than a kid in a candy store. He got close to some high level athletes he loves to watch and a coach he has watched for twenty years. He took advantage of an opportunity to pop his head in for a second and exited. Many would do the same if they had the opportunity. Please don't twist it. It was purely innocent.

It really doesn't surprise me that Sloan doesn't recognize Monson. I wouldn't know if the leader of the Presbyterians or the nearest Jewish temple tapped me on the shoulder. Not everybody in the world cares about the current leadership of the LDS, but at least the players did the same as I would...show respect and get a kick out of it.
Brother of Mahonri | 8:49 a.m. March 29, 2008
Where was security? The jazz really need to do a better job of keeping the fans away from the players and the coach during a game. Yes we mormons are famous for our lack of proper boundaries, but that was unbelieviably rude of Monson to disrupt the game like that even for a mormon.
Re: Sloansshock | 8:51 a.m. March 29, 2008
I appreciate you exercising your first amendment rights on this paper. Don't get me wrong I think that this papers propaganda especially in regards to BYU athletics can be nauseating at times.
But calling this propaganda when ESPN discussed it as part of the game recap is hardly what I would call propaganda.
President Monson is a leader of a worldwide religion. To think that this is not noteworthy that he interacted with the team is rediculous.
If the Pope was at a Real Madrid or Manchester United Game and was a fan of one of those teams, it would be all over the Associated Press.

Chill out! You're making more out of this than you need to because of your obvious anti-LDS slant.
Anti Creepy | 9:01 a.m. March 29, 2008
I watched the game on YV. I thought it wa aswesome that a community leader would attend the game. It shows great community support. Thomas S. Monson is cool. Such a friendly guy. The only thing remotely "creepy" from the event was that he wore a concervative suit and tie to a sporting event. But then again, taht is President Monson. Always living his religion.
Anonymous | 9:03 a.m. March 29, 2008
Mahonri,
Chances are, when he performs the service you demand, you're not going to see it. If you want someone to perform service for the purpose of appeasing those who are watching, I think you need to look to Hollywood. I guess you would only be satisfied if he took a video camera on all of his hospital visits and posted the footage on youtube.

All the mormons are so worried about Sloanshock, many tell him to "get a life".
I HAVE NEWS FOR, YOU NEED TO GET A LIFE. The Deseret News is 100% propaganda, and just because you state that does not make you "ANTI MORMON'.
Let people believe what they want, even if it is that the LDS church is full of it, because guess what; just all the other religions in the world, IT IS.

elo has a good point---if I am critical of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I'm anti-Mormon. Weird. But if a member of the LDS is critical of my behavior or beliefs, they're just trying the save the soul of some wicked person who just doesn't know better. Typical religious hypocritical babbling.
Fredd | 9:28 a.m. March 29, 2008
I'd like to point out it wasn't halftime. It was the middle of the third quarter and Sloan was conducting his time out. Very rude for anyone to be so presumptious to think they can walk up to a professional team in a huddle and slap backs and make small talk. (Note I made no mention of religion) It probably was covered by ESPN because it was creepy and unusual.
