It's amazing that they are that deep in the hole. I know when I take my family it costs us a pretty penny. How did they get that deep in debt?

Every time I take my family to the museum they are packed with people and at $6-8 per person (even babies who don't walk!) how can they be that far in debt? Discovery Gateway is a great museum...well at least the main floor. The upstairs is full of broken and dirty toys and equipment already. But still, I am a supporter and take my kids. I even bought a year membership. I just don't understand where that tremendous debt comes from.

The previous director was completely incompetent. Also, what's with the new name? That name is incredibly generic that most people won't even know what it is and therefore not go visit.

The museum is a disappointment, which might explain part of the problem. When we moved from Cincinnati, we had hoped to find as good a museum as the one we left. Major letdown. Here's to hoping the Thanksgiving Point gets their museum up and running soon.
They need tax subsidies | 4:52 p.m. April 15, 2008
To make something like this work you can't just depend on ticket sales to cover the budget. You need to force the entire population to fund the project (whether they want to or not) by attaching your budget to their taxes.

you get what you pay for | 9:39 a.m. April 16, 2008
By way of education for those of you who think "more" tax subsidization is the answer for this clearly has no idea how a non-profit organization works. Nearly all Non-profit Operations (including the Planetarium, Ballet West, Utah Symphony, Hogel Zoo, etc) rely on charitable contributions (i.e. fund raising) from the community to operate -- entry ticket sales are only a small portion of their operating budget. If Utah citizens want facilities that rival other major cities, where on earth do they expect the money to come from? Utahn's are notorious for wanting the best there is, but not expecting to pay for ANY of it. For a community of predominantly white, Christian, male business owners with large families, it's absolutely disgusting to see such a lack of contribution toward a facility that benefits the very ideals they promote! Please Mr. Utah business owner, step up to it and support the Discovery Gateway, or it won't be here at all!

I'm a nanny and i take my kids there all the time. They really like it, and thier parents like it better than me taking them to a movie. At least they are learning and getting some exercise there! I think they do a good job for the most part!
