He would still have made the best president. Although I have admired John McCain for many years, I think Mitt would have been the best.

The real No. 1 reason: Cornball humor that fails to make hyenas laugh.

I watched this and read it. It is pretty funny!
He is such a class act and has such a great sense of humor. I have a sad feeling that America let the best of the lot go! Personally, I am hoping that McCain will ask him to accept the opportunity to be his running mate. He would be immensely beneficial to our nation.
Mitt is winning on nearly every internet poll asking who should be the VP....
He is a great man.

I can't see a downside to Mitt running as VP. He'd bring some much-needed calm and economic savvy to the ticket (McCain's not particularly famous for either). If he helps the ticket pick up a Northeastern state or two, and possibly Michigan, and get a win, wonderful. The Republic is preserved. On the other hand, if the ticket loses (as it well might), it can be blamed on a particular stripe of intolerant Protestant staying home, and with any luck discredit their kind with the Republican Party.

Richard G. Sounds like you need to take out your humor from time to time. Relax its just people joking around. Life's too serious as it is.
Lee | 2:40 p.m. April 17, 2008
Mitt Romney is a savvy politician with the integrity and character to go with it. He is ready to take over immediately if need be in the vp position and ready to lead the nation as president. He was very funny last night at the dinner. His humor becomes him. Go Mitt!!!

Richard G., I think you just called urself a Hyena. How funny is that?
Jessie | 3:05 p.m. April 17, 2008
I think Richard meant that the press corp are hyenas waitig around for a kill like they did with Mitt through the whole race.

...fell down and broke his hair...
Priceless! I wanted to vote for that man, I really did.
C'mon Richard G, I bet if John Stewart had made that joke you would laughed about it through the whole commercial break.

If people seen a little more of this side of him it might have made a difference. I'm all for an M&M ticket.

Romney's top ten was great! I was, and still am, a Romney supporter, but I highly doubt McCain will choose him as his VP. He needs to diversify----the country will be buzzing with excitement and anticipation at the opportunity to elect the first black (or possibly woman) President----and another rich, white guy just won't bring anything extra to the ticket. If McCain is to beat Obama's race----and the surge of ultra-tolerant, unbiased love that he is going to receive----he has to have a minority running with him---and even that may be a long shot!
JI | 5:31 p.m. April 17, 2008
I'm glad he dropped out of the race ... that's the funniest thing he's ever done.
Observer | 5:58 p.m. April 17, 2008
If there was more humor in the world, people laughed more, took themselves less seriously and accepted others more, the world would be a much better place and life would be much more enjoyable.

Romney will be America's best President in a very long time.

It was funny. It had humor. How much was scripted? I don't know.
But it was funny and laughter is a very good medicine.

"M&M" ticket. Love the name. Someone should trademark that.

I'm a Catholic 86 year old woman. I thought he was the best man for the job, and had the cleanest, honest slate, he wasn't in it to make money, like most of our Senators, he could have shown them how to spend money properly. We need a Business Man, not a life time polition.

Sad to see someone McCains age running for president
notice how he responds to questions with out notes or prompter, bad very bad. By the time the election is here the country will be just short of a depression, we need someone like Mitt to bail it out, no one minority or otherwise will surfice. Having watched him orchestrate the bail out of the Olympics was something to behold. The country needs
Romney, Mccain needs Romney, McCain is not smart enough to see it. If not Romney, this is one conservative who will sit this dance out, and watch the debacle take place from the sidelines.

I was disappointed that Mitt would degrade another individual (Al Gore) for a laugh. And yes I donated to Mitt's run for president.
Thanks CJP... | 9:41 p.m. April 17, 2008
for donating to Mitt's campaign...without that kind of support we would not have had another good AL Gore joke. THE REAL MITT IS GETTING BETTER ALL THE TIME. GO MITT...GO AMERICA.
to cjp | 9:47 p.m. April 17, 2008
Lighten up. Having watched his performance, his reference to Al Gore drew the most laughs from the ultra-liberal media in attendance at the dinner. I thought it was great.
to cjp | 10:06 p.m. April 17, 2008
Hope you noticed, several references to several people...corkscrew landings under sniper fire...varmint season...passport files...and the best shots were at himself.
This was funny folks. If you hated him before, nothing changed. If you loved him before, you now have another reason.

What about the joke pointed at Hillary? What about the one pointed at his family? What about the one pointed at his campaign? What about the rest of them, pointed at himself? At least he's balanced. Well, I guess he "degraded" himself more than anyone else, so maybe not so balanced.
Good grief. Get a sense of humor.

If Mitt isn't chosen for VP I'm writing him in for President. I won't waste my vote for someone I don't want.
ello | 10:40 p.m. April 17, 2008
MItt, your are so funny! I think that qualifies you to be the leader of the free world! I know that you wrote your own jokes, and that just proves that you are the man for the job! PLLLLLLLLease enter the race again. I would hate to have to vote for someone like Obama who is out to help the working class. I really don't want poor people to have health benefits, who wants to see someone in the waiting of MY doctor with tattered cloths.
Please run MR. MItt so I can hear the great and godly voices of Rush Limbuagh and Sean Hannity "Rush the Vote" and "Hannitize American" stop covering Obama 24-7 and start to talk about things that matter, like AMERICA AND THE REST OF THE WORLD.
Thanks!!!!!!!

I wish that this side of Mitt's personality would have come out more, but with the tag gang up on him between McCain and Huck, there was no room for humor. I hope that McCain will lighten up a bit, he is being a bit to somber, I do not like Huck, but he did have great humor and even Hillery has some humor. Obama is very dry and yes charming, but he is like a old house with a lot of secret passageways. Mitt may not be VP, but I think that he will play a great part in the white house if McCain gets in.

Gotta tell you ello.... Romney's "comedy" is way better than your "satire".... Think you are in the wrong place... You need to send this one to your buddies in SF, (in fact, hand deliver it and take all of your belongings with you and stay awhile)they might think that it's clever... The rest of us, well we just think that you and your comments are boring...

Wish McClain would stay in Washington and vote once in awhile--or, wait a minute, maybe I'm glad he isn't voting. Hasn't helped us here in AZ one darned bit!
I don't think the powers that decide things in the Republican Party were serious about this election--McCain is no competition for either Obama or Mrs. Clinton, no matter whom he chooses as VP--and if he's smart, it will be Huckabee in an attempt to carry the "conservatives", the South, and the Born Again Christians, all areas where his record shows him to be incredibly weak.
As for America--I'm scared! Think I'll get me one of those bumper stickers that says, "Don't vote for anybody!"

What if Mitt had run as Mitt, instead of a reinvented ultra-conservative designed to distinguish himself from Giuliani and McCain? What may have seemed like good strategy at the time served only to gut his campaign of the authenticity that might have made him the Republican party's only hope to win in 2008.

"...it can be blamed on a particular stripe of intolerant Protestant staying home, and with any luck discredit their kind with the Republican Party."
Would that particular stripe happen to be evangelicals and others that read their Bibles and therefore disagree with LDS beliefs and doctrines? That's 'intolerance' now? Are you going to tell me with an honest heart that the LDS church is tolerant of the beliefs and doctrines of other churches/denominations/faiths? Or are they labeled 'apostates', 'gentiles', etc?
When will you folks understand that disagreement concerning these things does not equate with 'hate' or 'bigotry' any more than your own disagreement with mine equates to such? And can you tell me that you would vote for an otherwise stellar candidate that happened to be Muslim? Honestly?
Astonishing.

Mitt might have had a chance, were it not for his constant dancing on position. America clearly saw through it...no coincidence that his 'long-held principles' changed according to the campaign he was involved in. Folks don't like phony.
McCain won't pick him because he won't carry The South or much of the lower Midwest if he does. The smartest thing he could do is pick Huckabee, who was a very effective governor and is surely as honest as any of the other folks running; not to mention he speaks well and comes across as trust-worthy.
Mitt would make a great olympics committee chairperson or something like that. The olympics are frankly not that important to most of the people in the world, and success there has little to do with the real world. If financial success counted, we'd have elected Ross Perot back when. Huck has known poverty; Romney has read about it.

Mitt's the man! Totally comfortable with him as V.P.
The republican's would have the hope and life they
are looking for to round out their conservative
ticket. He's so well rounded, this country needs him. M&M SWEET!
Business know how is invaluable, not enough of this knowledge in the White house.

Hilarious! VP Cheney was a riot as well.
Funny | 8:34 a.m. April 18, 2008
Every bit as funny as late night entertainment. Letterman should contact Mitt's writers when his own go on strike. Mitt's family and friends proudly support this man, because they know him to be quite personable, very true to his conscience, and extremely capable (Even if that means improving his political leanings, despite how changing one's position for the better will be used against you.)
Too bad America couldn't see through the equivocatory political lambasting that was sold them. McCain? Obama? Hillary? These are your people of integrity, people you would go to for advice, but could also just enjoy their company. Please! I'd rather spend time with Romney from the friend level to the executive level any day. Hands down!

If there is a Muslim whose political agenda matches my conservative views, I for one can honestly say I could vote for that Muslim.
Many LDS (Who by the way read the Bible and therefore agree with Evangelicals on any true interpretations of your Bible) have often voted for many Evangelicals, solely based on sharing similar political views. Of course, we differ in our beliefs. But I can honestly say that there are both LDS and Evangelicals who have shown the ability to unite politically while remaining tolerant of one another religiously.
So yes, it is intolerance for any Evangelical or any Mormon--or anyone else for that matter--to not vote for an Evangelical, a Mormon, a Muslim, or a Samaritan--or any other of God's children--based on religion, when that person's political positions and stance is not best represented by someone else, who they end up voting for.
Astonishing!

It was graceless to take a shot at Al Gore who could and *did* win a Noble Prize. I'd stake the ranch on the fact that Romney never will until they come up with a prize for enriching yourself by buying up companies and putting Americans out of work.
Chill out | 12:11 p.m. April 18, 2008
Anonymous needs to chill out. Al Gore has a great sense of humor and he would laugh at this; he has mocked his own transformation in interviews. If you actually think Mitt is planing on trying for a Nobel, you should re-read the title of this article "Mitt mocks himself".

Mitt does not need to be the president. But America sure needs Mitt.I think his voice and influence is here to stay.P.S. I think they could build a nice little cottage on the White House grounds for Mitt and Ann.Nothing fancy. Just to have him close by when they need him. And need him they will.

All you mormon hating liberals can keep hating Mitt all you want but the reality is that your hate for him is only a reflection of the envy you have of his success and for what he will mean in the future to the conservative base and republican party. It is unfortunate that your fear of what he is capable of only leads you to hate him more!

Mitt was hilarious. Evangelicals can lie all they want. They (not all) hurt America by doing what they did along with that hypocrite, Huckabee. No respect here for Huckabee, nor his so called "Christian" cronies. Pot shots at Mormons have been going on since thousands were murdered and/or driven from their homes all the way to the Salt Lake valley by so called "Christians." (Personally, I think all Mormons need to be reimbursed for that miscarriage of justice. Juuust kidding!) Mitt was the best person for the run at the White House. He still is. He could have, and will if V.P., pulled this country out of the worst financial mud puddle I have seen personally in my 65 years. People should contact McCain and let him hear loud and clear who needs to be our V.P. Forget about the hypocrites and let's think as "American" Republicans. Romney rocks.
Geneva from CA | 4:31 p.m. April 19, 2008
Mitt is the greatest. If the "independents" had stayed out of the Republican Primary, he would be the nominee today. If McCain doesn't pick him as the VP nominee, he's making a huge mistake. Mitt is what McCain needs to win. The economy is so important to all the people, and Mitt gets it.
