He was a loving missionary whom the Brazilian people easily recognized his Christlike love. He was a great leader in the mission field!

I am thankful that men and women across the world are willing to give their lives, if that is what's required, in the service of their God. May the Lord always bless this special family.

So sorry for your loss. He sounds like a great kid. I would have liked to have known him. Brazil is a wonderful and somewhat dangerous place. I am sure that he was committed to serving the people there and that he loved them very much. My heart goes out to his parents, family and friends.

God Bless you and your family during this most difficult of times. Our son plays for Weber Highs Soccer team and is planning on serving a mission. We only hope that your faith sustains you, and your knowledge that he is in the the care of his Heavenly Father carries you through the trying days ahead. May God Bless you and yours. Your son, although we didn't know him, has left a positive influence on our boys.
We thank you and pray for you.

Having served as a missionary in Brazil myself, I can't begin to stress the danger of a hit-and-run there. I mean, there are signs in some of the cities of flying bodies warning pedestrians not to get in the way of vehicles. Brazilian drivers are not that conscientious, and they are often extremely drunk. I had my fair share of close calls on some of those roads.
That said, this is heartbreaking news and I pray his family is well during this time.

I don't know Brazil and the drivers like the above poster, but I've always been taught to walk against traffic for this very reason. The article says that he was hit from behind so he probably didn't even see it coming.

My family sends its condolences to the Knoop Family. May the truthfulness of the Gospel sustain your faith and comfort you at this time to know that you will see your son again. I am sure President Hinckley has already welcome Elder Knoop with open arms as he will assist in teaching those in the spirit world. Families can be forever.

I grieve for you, with love... | 7:55 a.m. April 23, 2008
I grieve for both families, knowing full well that my grief is Heaven's joy on receiving two beautiful young people there.
For the Knoops: I served in Brazil. I don't hesitate to say, though not wishing to offend my Brazilian friends, that the driving is crazy there. (One of our Elders got hit by a bus, but survived.) My Brazilian friends comment on how amazing the driving is in the US...everyone driving in neat little rows, tudo direitinho, staying in between the lines, stopping for red lights and stop signs. It's amazing to me that more missionaries are not lost to Brazilian traffic.
I believe the Lord wanted Elder Knoop at home, with Him, for a wise purpose. My own son was sent home from Brazil early, though honorably released. I hope I don't add to your pain by saying that your situation is evidence to me that things could have been a whole lot worse.
I hope and prayer that the Comforter be with you, to ease the pain of your aching hearts. I hope friends and neighbors are gathering 'round, to help you through the passage of such sorrow. May the Lord sustain you in the days ahead.

This breaks my heart, thinking of my own son serving in Sao Paulo East. I can't imagine the pain you must be feeling. You are in our prayers, and thousands of others are praying for you as well.

Elder Knoop was a humble servant of the Lord. He was always willing to reach out to help others. I look up to him for his Christlike service, example, and friendship. May the Lord reassure his parents that Matt is in His hands and will keep him safe forever, and will continue so when they meet again. I love you Matt!
