This is an injustice to victims. The very least the driver should have been charged with is aggrevated assualt with a motor vehicle, the hit and run a secondary charge regardless of drinking or not. The only hit and run that should be considered a misdeamenor is when only property damage is involved. Everything else should be a charge of aggrevated assault and evasion of arrest when they leave the scene. Any driver violating a driving law and causing an accident should be charged with aggrevated assault along with the driving violation. One is a criminal charge and the other driving violation. Too many drivers are getting away with murder in how law enforcement is charging these irresponsible drivers and its time to get their attention in a serious way. Driver inattention is the major cause of all accitdents and it needs more serious actions and prevention. I support this man in his efforts to get more serious and better legislation on the books for hit and run as well as other injury and death related accidents in motor vehicles. Causing a death is not a misdemeanor by any means or method with a motor vehicle.

Politicians have time for lobbyists, business leaders, new laws, etc. but somehow never have time to correct laws that need fixing. I guess their interests are more important then those they represent.

I'll do my part. I will write a letter to my state senator and representative today and call for a change in the law. I'm very sorry for the Blount family, but maybe something positive can result from this tragedy.

I will be contacting my legislators about this. I firmly support Mr. Blount that hit and runs should be a felony. Whether a driver is impaired or not shouldn't even be part of the equation. You hit, you run, you get a felony. (I also agree with Bob G that it should be a misdemeanor when only property damage is involved.) Utah needs to step up and get with the program.
While accidents really can be just accidents, fleeing from one certainly is no accident.

My Daughter was one of the people that died in a hit and run accident and David Romero (the driver) was only charged with misdemeanors,. While we can't prove he was drinking beacause it took 3 days to find him,He does have 3 prior drunk driving arrests. It infuriates me that he could leave my daughter in the middle of the road, Go home, clean his car, and hide from authorities, and only get a midemeanor. I will call our legislature and join this man in the fight to change this law.

I ache for the victim's in this and other accidents. I can't fathom why the laws seem to favor the drivers and others while ignoring the rights of the injured or dead. Where is the justice?
Where is the Justice? | 11:49 a.m. May 2, 2008
You won't find it in the United States of America. We have a "legal" system, not a "justice" system, and our politicians and lawyers have absolutely no intention of changing that. They get too much money and power from it.
I hope Mr. Blount and Ms. Peaslee are successful in their efforts to get the laws changed. It is unconscionable to me that a hit-and-run of any kind regardless of impairment does not carry a VERY heavy penalty.

The reason the laws favor the law abusers is because the injured or dead obviously no longer have a voice. Only the criminals are left alive to scream and yell that they be treated fairly.

I will willing throw my support, however small it is, behind this cause. This family's cries of justice are just and should be heard. I would hope the D-News does a follow up story and/or provides information how to best help this gentleman in his fight to get the laws changed.

Hey Pat! Did you miss one - on purpose?
Al Burns was killed by an illegal alien in front of his home on Jan 31 of this year - who was bailed out is less than an hour, then he skipped out on his bail and never showed up for his trial!
Let's not forget Al!

I support the change in the law and offer my support in the way of time and energy to see this happen. I have supported and promoted MADD in the past and will gladly give of my time to help in this cause. As a newer resident of Utah, I find it unbelieveable that such a loop-hole exists in Utah Statutes. Drivers must be held accountable and when a statute allows them to slip out of the grips of the law, it is time to make a change. I would like to know how to reach Mr. Blount and help in this cause. Please keep us informed.
