I was in attendance for Sister Beck's speech. While her words were well written and generally restated her well reported worldview, her delivery still leaves much to be desired. I left the Marriott Center thinking I had been talked down to like a child. Sister Beck would be much more effective if she simply engaged the audience as intellectual equals.

You heard her... Women please stay at home and do things there. That kind of sounds like bad advice, unless of course that is what you wanted to hear.

Sounds like a great talk that really hit on the issues our society needs to hear. Everything she mentioned relates to something that is really a problem in our society.
She gives great talks. Sometimes they rub people the wrong way but in my dealings those are usually people looking for something to be mad about in the first place.
Great advice !

My goal is to fully support this good sister on whom the Lord has put the burden of leading the whole Relief Society. As long as she has the Lord's confidence, she will have mine as well.

I think some women in the LDS church would be happier if a committee was assembled and they got to vote on what the Lord expected of them. I mean in your lives you tell everyone around you what to do why not tell the Lord what to do as well.

Why are people so willing to be sheep and assume these people are chosen by God to lead them. I think it is good to listen but please don't take every word as a word from the Good Lord. He sure gets blamed for a lot and used a lot. God Bless wise enlightened people

Umm.. I don't remember seeing stay home and do things there. That would be a pretty lame statement. Why do people freak out if strengthening our homes is mentioned. If you feel guilty about something then deal with that. I for one am all for strengthening my home I also feel good about strengthening myself. I feel confident in what I am doing and that's really what women need. It's not a matter of to work or not to work we are each individuals and the only responsibility is to do what's best for our families. For each of us that will be different but if you feel confident in what you do, and feel it to be the right thing you won't get bothered by these talks in fact you might even understand what they're saying. There is nothing wrong with stregtheing your family no matter what your schedule looks like.

Sad Archaea that you are in a position to want to be at womens conference and be taught yet you are not open and willing. Seems very judgemental. She is a servant of the Lord and I'm sure He is happy with her service or she would not be there. I happily support her and think she's fabulous! I know most of us would not do as well as her, yet some are soo critical. As for East Bay, there is nothing wrong with us who love to be at home where the family counts and there is nothing wrong with someone encouraging us to do so.

Great points. I would like to expand on the, "... what your schedule looks like." I question what is on the schedule? Is it that important? Can things be streamlined or eliminated? Satan will fill our lives with distractions.

How sad that you took the time to listen to one of the chosen women leaders of the church yet chose to be so critical. She is who the Lord wants there and I'm sure He's happy with her service. I wish people weren't so critical of those that are asked to serve in such positions. If you were ever to serve there, I hope we are not as critical of you.

If any of you critics of the critics here would read Mormon history you would better understand there is an incredible amount of personal opinion that passes as "doctrine" from the general authorities of the Church.
Go to any D. Book and look at their published editions of Brother McConkie's "Mormon Doctrine". You will find the disclaimer that dismisses the book and much of his teachings as "representative of the times and culture in which it was written."
We have a wonderful history and can learn much from it. The first step to understanding is to clear your shelves of the "Work and the Glory" series. The second step is to go to Benchmark Books and ask Chris or Landon for recommended reading materials.
There is nothing to hide from and you have nothing to lose but your own ignorance of the past and misunderstanding of the present.

Sisters....You still have your agency to exercise here. No one is going to hold it againts you if you want to follow her counsel or not.

It sounds like a very good talk. I wish I was able to stay home. Some sisters are able to and some like me, have to work in order for the utilities to be paid and for food to be on the table. I think it is important to remember everyone's situation is different. I think its also important to remember we are all on the same team.
Re Sister Beck | 8:25 p.m. May 2, 2008
Sister Beck is in my stake and is a neat lady. I've only been able to hear her a couple of times while she was in the YW Gen Pres. I took my daughter and listened to Br. and Sis Beck speak. They are dynamic and wonderful people. She doesn't have a mean spirited bone in her body.
People today look to be offended to justify whatever it is they are doing that they know they shouldn't be doing. I deal with it everyday with my children. they get that look that they've been caught and then out come the excuses. After a little discussion, they finally fess up to the issue.
Same with today's feminist movement. For some reason women of today think they have to be men. Not sure why, but the movement tells them they must.
God created man and woman for a purpose. In the ideal situation, the man would bring home the bacon and the woman would be home with the children. Women today think that is outdated and just plain wrong. There are extenuating circumstances but the ideal should be strived for. That's the way God established it. Is He wrong? I say no.

I actually had the opportunity to attend this Women's Conference. Everyone in charge did an exceptional job!! I really enjoyed listening to Sister Beck. Everything she said was exactly what us women in the church need to hear. It is so easy to fall short of all that is expected of us. That is why we attend conferences such as these. To strengthen us and help us to remember why we are here and what our potential is. We all struggle, but with God's help all is possible!

Thanks Sister Beck | 7:11 a.m. May 3, 2008
Sister Beck I look forward to hearing you speak. I was dissapointed at April Conference no to hear from you. I for one thank you for encouraging us sister to make family our first priority.. AFTER GOD. 1 God, 2 Family, 3 Country
I appreciate your firmness and straight forward ways. Thanks for the conference message, "Women who know". I for one wept while listening to you. No success can compensate for failure in the home!!!!
Keep it up.
For those of you who are offended by her straight forward messages... You have agency... Choose ye this day whom you will serve... As for me and my house we will serve the LORD!!!!!!!!!

I agree. I think we can better strengthen each other when we take time to recognize our differences. Some women may be able to strengthen the home by staying at home, while others strengthen their home by providing for their children. Some stay at home mothers find themselves unexpectedly faced with the death or disability of a spouse, or a difficult divorce. Others don't have the opportunity to marry and have children. But if each woman does her best given her individual circumstances and then looks around to see how she can lift up both those whose circumstances are the same and different, then it seems more strength is to be found, and those who don't have the ideal situation won't feel like they aren't measuring up.
