With society's overwhelming preoccupation with the popular media, it's no wonder this country's in such a sorry state. If people cared more about the welfare of their neighbors and environment instead of who got voted off the island last night, life would be better for everyone.

Nothing against show business, but can you imagine the benefit we would have if the attention given to one who has excelled at show, were given to our young people who excel at academics?

"reality" tv is idiotic, at best. This Idol thing is just the latest 'mormon boy does good' story now that mitt romney has been bumped off the stage.

what a bunch of fuddy-duddies. Why can't you just sit back and enjoy truly talented youth.
with all the negative news out there, its nice to see something 'lighter' every once in a while.

DeLaval Milker you are absolutely, 100 percent right. Editorials on dead movie stars, countless stories on silly tv shows. Where's the news in this "news"paper?
It's what sells | 9:16 a.m. May 12, 2008
Fact is the majority of America is far more concerned with David of Murray than they are with the things destroying out freedoms and society.

Simply put, it is what sells papers. If there is a front page story about the slow creeping effects of socialism in our government how many people do you think would purchase a paper on impulse? Most of the people don't care. It is sad, but it is true.

I am thrilled that everyone is making a huge deal over David Archuletta. Isn't it great that we have someone in the spotlight who has values. David is making Utah proud. Thanks David for being a good person with high ideals.

I am a huge David Archuleta fan and have greatly enjoyed the media coverage. However, it does not even slightly preclude my caring about my neighbors or the environment. It is possible to enjoy reading about David's accomplishments while at the same time helping others. In fact, David's music is an inspiration to millions of fans. I feel sad for people who don't understand this.

In the face of the mostly bad news (for instance today's tragic story about the staggering loss of life in China) that we read about and hear about on a daily basis, it is uplifting to hear some good news for a change. My joy at David's success in no way diminishes the sorrow I feel for the people of China.

I think spirits are rejuvenated by good news in general, making people more willing and better able to deal with the problems that confront us.

Front page this morning---the Utah Jazz. Are they any more newsworthy then David Archuletta?? More people watch Idol than Jazz basketball. Newspaper should report what people are interested in and what is happening in our area as well as hard news. Thanks for the info on both the Jazz and David.

What's "News Worthy" | 12:13 p.m. May 12, 2008
What is the definition of "News Worthy"? I think if people are interested... It's News worthy. People are obviously interested (it's ratings are higher than any other show) so that's not debatable.

I agree entertainment news like this shouldn't be "Front Page" news, but I've rarely seen any American Idol news on the front page. In fact the only time I've seen it on the front page was when David Archuleta made his recent visit to film the segment on his home town (all this stage of the competition all contestants film a short segment in their home town. Not a big deal, but it is news.

If you think the people who enjoy watching Amerian Idol need to get a life... I think likewise, people are who's main issue in life is to complain about those who are Idol, or that it gets mentioned in the News need to find something more important to complain about.

In March I had the opportunity to attend a convention and one of the speakers was former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. She said the following (paraphrased) there are 24% of Americans that cannot identify the three branches of government, there are 33% of Americans that cannot name any member of the Supreme Court but they can all tell you who the 'judges' are on 'American Idol'. Pretty sad.
Nice Escape | 9:18 p.m. May 12, 2008
I am serving in the Army and I have to say that it is nice to be able to watch “Idol” and not have to worry about more “serious stuff” Relax it is entertainment if we spent all of our time worrying about global warming or terrorists or the next great threat to humanity we would go crazy. So enjoy the show the world’s problems will still be their in the morning. P.S. Reality TV is not “Idiotic” it is a nice escape from my reality if only for a moment.
