Although I commend the author's efforts to promote reading, I think it's a bit odd that she gets free advertising for HER BOOK by going around to different schools. This kind of event should be at a local bookstore, and not in a public school setting. Those kids are going to go home and ask their parents for the books and the parents will go out and buy them. Why should public schools provide a forum for businesses to target young consumers? Wrapping up commercial activities (i.e, selling books) under the auspices of education is slightly shady, in my opinion.

I actually attended one of her presentations and found it quite informative, even as an adult. It was refreshing to see so many children excited to read. With my own children it is difficult to get them to open a book, but after they meet Karen, they both asked if we could read her books, which we are doing as a family. Other authors have visited their school, but this was the first time they said it wasn't boring!

My question is whether she has always gone by "K.L." or if it's just a "J.K. Rowling" kind of thing to do.

She is not giving uptodate information.

"spelunking" is no longer and hasn't been used in years.

They call it "caving"

She has always gone by K.L. Fogg. Many authors use their initials to help maintain some anonymity. Spelunking was used just fine, as it was used in this multiple choice question-- Another name for cave exploration is:

A.      Cavitation
B.      Spelunking
C.      Rappelling
D. Excavation

Either way, she is still teaching children about something new to them. Although you may consider it out-dated most of the National Societies throughout the world use "Speleological Association" which would imply that the derivative spelunking would still be acceptable.
