the only time you hear about southern utah schools is when they take the title nice job DIXIE you are the best team in the state no matter classification
of course | 11:47 a.m. May 14, 2008
it would be a shame for them not to win, seeing how they can play golf year round. makes you wonder what is wrong with pine view and snow canyon. i give props to the northern schools for playing good golf under such poor weather conditions all year and not being able to practice year around.
weather a huge factor | 1:02 p.m. May 14, 2008
The southern Utah schools have a tremendous advantage in a spring sport like golf. I understand the Cache Valley schools didn't get two practice days in a row on the golf course until part way through April. That means their season was about 5-6 weeks long. Here are kudos to ALL the girls who helped pioneer the effort this spring!

down south | 2:48 p.m. May 14, 2008
The weather is great to play here in st george, but you also have to have the students to play the sport. I had 7 students try out compared to 22 that tried out for one of the 5a schools up north. Its not really the weather that produces champions. Plus the Vines girl is from Texas originally, she is an awesome golfer who practices every day, rain, snow, or shine. Everytime a region 9 team wins everyone up north complains. We had a school with 1000 students beat every 4a and 5a team in the state. It takes athletes to win championships, not weather.
here they come | 3:10 p.m. May 14, 2008
all the excuses why northern schools did not win
RE: down south | 3:32 p.m. May 14, 2008
It sure helps to have both!! Don't minimize the role of the coach either. Somebody needs to get the girls to the matches on time.
ha i totally called it | 3:37 p.m. May 14, 2008
yup dixie won. ha I love it how all of the northern schools have used weather as an excuse. Dixie and snow canyon volleyball took 2nd and 1st. FYI court volleball is practiced inside. well, at least when i checked last.

Let's be honest, the weather (especially this year) was a major factor. With a sport like golf though it all depends on which players you HAPPEN to get at your school. With such a short season you dont have much time to practice or work with them. Either they are good and have worked on their game alone or they're not, simply put. On another note congratulations to Dixie, job well done. It seems odd that this is the only sport that 5A, 4A aren't separate. I understand the reason, but still think schools from separate classifications should be crowned. Cottonwood should receive 3rd place honors in 4A, while schools like Skyline should be crowned as the 5A state champions, Freemont runner up and Brighton should be 3rd. That's all. Good job to the school and everyone that played, sounds like it was an awesome day there at Davis.
Too early | 10:06 p.m. May 14, 2008
Obviously, they started girls golf too early. Still not enough good players to justify having it as a high school sport.
Girl's Golf Coach | 7:30 a.m. May 15, 2008
A comment like that is un-called for, "not enough good girl golfers". These young ladies most of them have never been on a golf course and have improved over 30 strokes in less than a month of good weather to golf in!. I want to know the last time any golfer of any gender as done that? I'am so proud of these young ladies. KEEP IT UP !!
reality check | 12:00 p.m. May 16, 2008
Someone went up to the Dixie girls after their victory and called them "cheaters" because they happen to live in a better climate. Players win because of talent and work, the top fourteen players are all veterans of the game, the top three finishers are from the north. Beginners don't make a winning team in any sport. "It was too cold to learn how to play golf so we could hurry up and win" is not even an excuse, it is irrelevant.
Go Dixie | 12:57 p.m. May 16, 2008
The weather down here is great, and I will agree that it gives the southern golfers an advantage in practicing and so forth. But you can still not take away what Dixie accomplished. Beating 5A and 4A schools is very impressive. I only wish I could golf half as good as all of the girls in the state tournament. Just by playing on a girls golf team the first year is scary, so good job to all of you girls that went out and golfed.
Down S. | 8:06 p.m. May 16, 2008
I can't believe that there are people that will discredit what Dixie did at the state tourney because of weather. Just take off your hats and shake hands and say great match like gentlemen or in this case gentlewomen! lets please end the ridiculous blogs about N. vs. S. There are great athletes across this great state and we tarnish things because of nonsense like the stuff written in this blog! Great job to all the teams and the players. It was awesome to watch!
