Viva Cannon!
Mark Knudson | 6:46 a.m. May 15, 2008
Chris Cannon will certainly take the election. The general electorate is far more in the center and pays more attention to the admonition to have charity in our immigration stance than deligates. Mr. Chaffetz is abrasive and can rally delegates with agendas, but I think he'll find to his surprise that his style won't play with the general population. John Jacob was a great candidate, but Chris' funds trumped the day. There ya go... shall we hide and watch?

The irony is that Chaffetz can't even vote for himself in this race because he doesn't live in the district. If 3d District voters elect him, then they get what they deserve--non-representation!

Cannon is the guy here. Chaffetz isn't what he says he is and sticks his finger in the wind to calculate the direction he needs to go.

GO CANNON!!

Cannon is not bad on most issues, but Chaffetz is a lot better. Illegal immigration is the deciding issue and Cannon is just flat wrong on that.

I really wich Chaffetz had taken on Jim Matheson- Nancy Pelosi's puppet on too many issues.

I live in Utah County and believe me, people don't care about admonition. They care about what is easy. They are sheep and will re-elect any mormon that has been there before. Seen it too many years..... Doug Robinson's column was right the other day. If you have an R in front of your name, then you really don't have to be accountable for anything...... They will elect you.

I don't plan on voting for Cannon, and many of my friends in the 3rd District won't either. In light of the current FLDS situation, I wonder if Cannon would care to elaborate on the statements made by his ancestor, George Q. Cannon.

"It is a fact worthy of note that the shortest lived nations of which we have record have been monogamic. Rome...was a monogamic nation and the numerous evils attending that system early laid the foundation for that ruin which eventually overtook her."

Under this definition, is the United States an evil nation for being monogamic as well?

This guy just sounds like someone who will say and do anything to get elected. The definitive politician in the bad sense of the word. I hadn't heard he didn't live the district. I'm sure he'll get all the nutty Ron Paulers though. Probably good company for him. Sad for Utah really.

Utah Voter - why should Cannon elaborate on whatever his long dead relative said in light of the FLDS situation? I guess in your eyes we are all guilty of original sin, whatever our ancestors did is ours to pay for?

Bringing up this ancient quotation is exactly the type of thought that makes Utah look like a bunch of back-woods hicks. Thanks so much for helping perpetuate hackneyed stereotypes!

Isn't Jason related to Dukakis (stepson I think)? When I was at BYU Jason was THE Democrat on campus. He was President of the College Democrats and Dukakis' Utah Chairman or something like that when Dukakis ran agains Bush1. I honestly thought Jason was running as a Democrat until a week ago.

I am really glad that someone brought up the FLDS and Cannon's long since dead relative. What in the world does that have to do with anything?

This is what we are dealing with. It is anything to get Cannon. I mean anything. So this guy does a bunch of research and bang, Cannon is now a polygamist. How ridiculous is that!

And this is the GOP convention. People get so rabid about the subject that will say anything. I spoke with one delegate a few weeks back who wants to deport all 10-12 million. The delegate admits that deporting all of them won't happen but they want it anyway and Jason is the man to give it them. So we know it can't be done, but vote for Jason because he will do it anyway. And also, Leavitt is a prostitute (a letter to the editor printed yesterday attacking Cannon as well) and now Cannon is a polygamist.

When does this crud end and we talk facts?!

Please Chaeffetz supporters, you ruin your own credibility when you make such stretches.

If Chaffetz wins it is purely by anti-Cannon voters not pro-Chaffetz ones. If they stick to what they say in their campaigns there will not be a difference in voting records. As a state delegate the more I met Jason the less I thought he was up to the task. He is evidence that a negative campaign is very effective. As I ask my fellow red bloods here in UT county why they don't like Cannon they usually come up with very vague, unfounded answers. His voting record is distorted and people bring up the Geneva issue (both sides of it-can't please anyone). Give me substance as to why replace Cannon with a young, inexperienced man who can give an applause line and not much else.

Chickens. Utah will get what it deserves--Cannon.
Timberwolf | 2:54 p.m. May 15, 2008
Go Chaffetz, clearly the better man when compared to pro amnesty, pro north American Union Cannon, lets hope we can finally rid ourselves of this establishment insider.

Even though two of my post have already been censored,(can't imagine why)can I will try again.
Congress is now trying to pass a law that will essentially take away all power from the States on any actions they may want to take to control illegal immigration into their states. Folks, this is becoming serious. By voting for an illegal immigration enabler like Chris Cannon, you are literlly helping to take away your power to determine what will or will not happen in your state. Don't you understand how serious this is getting. Congress and Cannon are against the citizenry. It is that plain. Perhaps there are many people in Utah profitting from illegal immigration. If so, enjoy the profits while you can, they are small compensation for taking away your freedoms and the freedoms of your fellow Utahans, which is what is going to happen. Congress wants, apparently to centralize power more and more, away from the citizenry. THINK ABOUT IT. This makes who you vote for almost a given, if one of the candidates is pro illegal immigration. THINK ABOUT IT HARD.

I've met many Utah 6th generation church members who think they're better than other church members because of their pioneer heritage. Perhaps Cannon can tap into this sentiment to win votes against a lowly convert like Jason.

I hope folks are smart enough to finally get Cannon out of office, especially now that they have a truly good alternative in Chaffetz.

Cannon has a much different campaign opponent this time, one that understands the issues and what they mean to the voters of the 3rd CD. Throckmorton was too much of a one issue candidate and never had more than $50,000 to work with. John Jacob on the other hand was not a true believer as far as illegal immigration was concerned, and the voters saw through it. Jacob thought money was all that was needed to beat Cannon, but he failed to put forth the personal effort needed with the primary voters, and depended on his paid staff. Chaffetz on the other hand has a huge volunteer force ready to go to work. I think Rep. Cannon will be able to find himself a nice lobbyist job next year, so don't feel too sorry for him.

In a democratic congress Cannon's seniority is nearly meaningless. Now is the time to change, he has never been a good representative of the 3rd CD. I actually think Rep Orton was much better.
Great Scott! | 9:12 a.m. May 17, 2008
The significance of the convention vote last weekend was that the majority of the delegates have taken the time to educate themselves on the issues. Your run of the mill constituent tends to be more like sheep--following the flock rather than taking the time to understand they're getting fleeced. I think Jason has the capacity to help them understand how bad Cannon is for this district. Jason is articulate, extremely informed, and capable of working hard for his district. He's a man of integrity and honor and when you listen to him speak, you can tell he's not just blowing smoke. If people will take the time to get to know him and his platform, Cannon doesn't stand a chance.
