Ego is often an ingredient in personalities that are top achievers. It may even be a significant factor for many who are currently in congress. So if that is a disqualifier we aught to throw most of them out of office.
A better question is whether or not they will represent my views and thus be worthy of my vote. Without the advantage of a voting record we cannot be sure what they will do until they get into office. Unfortunately some will talk a good game before they get to play, but are a sore disappointment as they fall victim to the "go along to get along" culture that is so pervasive in Congress. Often they try to play the middle of the field in an effort to attract voters from both sides and wind up capitulating on their principles. That appears to be Mr. Cannon's approach. Maybe a football player with a stronger spine is what we really need.

Is he related to Micheal Dukakis and if so how?

I keep hearing rumors about Chaffetz's history with Nuskin. Does anyone know anything about that?

My my. Sounds like someone didn't get asked to the Homecoming Dance. ;-)

Spoc,
Check out his record while serving as Gov. Hunstman Cheif of Staff.
Interesting.... Prima Donna does fit the bill. Also he has zero ability to work with others who does not agree with him.

Sounds like B. Hussein Obama, without the helmet.
No skills, no qualifications, and a burning desire to show himself off before a camera.
What is your point? That -you- decide who can and cannot run for office? What has become of freedom, and the ability of anyone who chooses, to run for public office?

The first two comments to this op-ed are just disturbing. The attack on the LDS church in behalf of Chaffetz is fun. So now we blame them for anyone who dares to disagree with Chaffetz?
The same can be said of Chaffetz. Apparently his campaign team is working over time to post all kinds of Cannon attacks. Tithing?!?
To Spoc, let's put it another way, since Mr Chaffetz likes to talk about his wonderful football kicking life.
Let's say we had an important football season to play. We were considering a kicker. We had a pretty solid one currently. Missed a few kicks here and there. Along comes some flashy, prima donna who talks the most glorious talk you have ever heard. To listen to this guy he can kick the football a thousand yards. Problem, he has never kicked a football in a game in his life. His only experience was running Dukakia for President campaigns and the College Democrats at BYU. So with basically no experience at all, he now wants to go right to the big league, all based on talk.
And why don't you make me the starting powerforward for the Utah Jazz.
Chaffetz-4-Congress? Think not!

This letter sounds like it comes from a jilted ex-girlfriend. Seriously, what did Chaffetz do to you, as you intently watched him slowly jog across the football field? You're saying that someone with perfect hair (and by the way, that is your description...interesting...) isn't qualified for office? I guess that immediately disqualifies Mitt Romney. Hey, maybe that's why he lost. People were jealous of his hair! New rule: to get elected, you must have bad hair. This makes perfect sense...

Well, at least Chaffetz knows an illegal alien amnesty bill when he sees it. Chris Cannon either can't see it or lies about it when discussing the subject!

Reading the comment about the tithe paying Mormons and propaganda offends me as an active LDS. This is just like the Utah Minutemen putting anti-LDS stories on their website. Apparently in order to stop immigration the Chaeffetz supporters have decided to also attack the LDS Church.
Didn't they do this back in 2004 or 2005 as well?

I keep hearing rumours about multiple lawsuits filed against Cannon for his dishonest business dealings. Does anyone have information on that? I've also heard that he has hosted wild drinking parties for underage teenagers at his home. Finally, I've heard that he allowed his daughters to live on non-BYU style housing (sharing an apartment with male roommates) at college.

Represent. That is the key word. As voters, we're looking for a representative who most closely mirrors our own lives. We're looking for someone who lives our principles and for someone who will stand up for our principles.
When the choice seems to be between an untried cheerleader who wants us to think that he is Superman's little brother and Mr. Cannon, who is much too timid for a representative, despair sets in.

*** "Mr. Cannon, who is much too timid for a representative" ***
Yes, that's his problem: he's timid!!!
That's a compliment dressed up as an attack: "My opponent's biggest weakness is that he's arrogant and vain. My biggest weakness is that I'm humble."

Understanding the Deseret News censorship policy:
Unsubstantiated attacks on Mr. Chaffetz get posted.
Factual rebuttals in defense of Chaffetz get censored.
Got it.
Thank you, Mr. Censor.

Solid - meaning Chris Cannon? What has Cannon done for District 3? What pork has he brought home? I recall an item for a million dollar air traffic control tower a few years ago - Wahoo! Given the 10-50-100 million dollar projects other congresscritters are buying off their constituents with that means that residents of District 3 are selling themselves really cheap.
So for all of you who keep touting Chris Cannon's experience: stop touting the time he's spent in office taking up space and spending your money. Start telling us what he's done with it.
Nothing, that's what.

"I keep hearing rumors about Chaffetz's history with Nuskin. Does anyone know anything about that?"
If Chaffetz did bad things at Nu Skin then why are Nu Skin's top two execs contributingto Chaffetz's campaign? CEO Blake Roney and Vice-Chairman Steven Lund have both given $2,000 to it.
And for those who don't like Nu Skin and use that against Chaffetz - Nu SKin has given plenty of money to Cannon over the years, too.

I can confirm that Jason Chaffetz did work at Nu skin during the 10 years I worked there. I'm not aware of any controversy with that at all. Nu Skin (the corporation) was a pretty decent place to work for people attending BYU and for a lot of us provided a great career start beyond a college job. The I/T experience I gained as they grew into multi-national markets has served me very well throughout my post-Nuskin career.
The people who worked at the corporation had real jobs in I/T, accounting, Corporate Communications, etc... which is much different than the independent distributors who try to sell Nu Skin products.

Wilkey,
You forgot that Nu Skin sent him to Australia, made him their general manager there, and gave him a $8 million budget to play with.
Sounds like maybe he might know how to manage a business to me!

Oh just solve the whole problem and vote for Bennion Spencer

I never heard of controversy about Chaffetz at Nu-Skin, but I certainly heard plenty about how Chris Cannon helped run Geneva into the ground (bankruptcy) Oops, I'll bet this comment doesn't make it past the DesNews screener.
I need to learn more | 4:32 p.m. May 16, 2008
I admit I need to learn more about him, but I'm not impressed by the commercial I keep hearing on KSL radio. The commercial is like they are reading his resume and the 2nd qualification in his list of accomplishments is "Married is wife"?
I'm shure she's a catch and a great source of pride, but what does it have to do with qualifying anyone to represent me in Washington?

Stewart,
He sued his own brother for $20 million! That was part of the failure of Geneva. Of course, between the two of them, they pretty much raped and plundered the pension fund at Geneva as well.
Those of us in the know, understand that Cannon is a scoundrel of the first order. One only has to ask whom he represents when he sponsors a bill like the Student Adjustment Act - which would have enabled illegal aliens to go to college on the taxpayer's dime.

This board looks more like an attack board than a comment board. I am voting for Jason Chaffetz because I like the stances that he has taken on issues. I think Chris Cannon did make a difference at one time in Congress, but I feel he has lost touch with his constituents and feel that it's time for a change. One of the biggest challenges currently facing our nation is an out-of-control budget and deficit. Jason has been fiscally responsible in this race and his campaign is completely debt-free. If he can do that in a race of this magnitude, I think that can translate well into the potential he has to help fix the financial crisis in Washington. It's time for a change!
