Any match play that is in progress has, and will always have, calls that appear to be unfavorable. Especially, if and only if you are loosing the match. However, after review of the Weber/Davis game there was a call that was actualized that made it to where Weber was unable to proceed in beating the Darts "hands down." At the end of the game -during regulation- a call was made that revoked Weber's obvious winning position. A hands ball was called that was more controversial than a -rebound shot- into the Davis net earlier in the match. I don't think that Davis' coach has any position -actually- in saying that, ' Davis lost due to a ref' because, as I have explained, Weber has a similar claim. So, either way Weber is the victor -fair and square!

I have been watching high school soccer for years, and I realize that we are on probation this year. However, I think one of the biggest problems are the refs. This game had bad calls the whole time on both sides; I was filming the whole game and I really wanted to show the refs the bad calls they made but of course thats not possible. One of the bad calls was directed at Webers' Spencer Malan; of whom was carded out of the game. Bad call big time! If one got a card, then the other one should have also received a card. Plus, the third goal during regulation play that was call back from weber that was not a hands ball either. So, I think, we have to try and enjoy the games because the reffing will always be the problem. TOO BAD!

I was at the game and I live in the Ogden area. There were bad calls on both sides. That is and always will be part of high school athletics.
As for the card on Spencer Malan. The first card was given from my stand point for him pulling a guy down which was deserved. The second card he got which put him out of the game...if people were noticing which I don't think nettimaximis was the Davis kid also received a yellow card. It was his first however where Spencer already had one and it kept him out of the game.
It was a great game....too bad someone had to lose.

I went to the game and didn't care who won. I am a fan of soccer and live up north so I wanted to check it out. First of all, I think anyone who was watching the game regardless of which team they were supporting would come to the conclusion that the ref in that game was bad. It boggles my mind how the oldest, most incompetent ref there gets the center ref job when there are much better refs running the lines. Also, It's not easy being a ref and they will always make mistakes but all anyone hopes for is that they do not have a major influence on the outcome of the game. The penalty kick on the hands ball was not a hands ball. When the ref blew the whistle no one knew what he was calling. On the hands ball call when the goal was taken back for Weber, most everyone knew it was a hands ball. That's why the DNews reporter referred to the penalty kick as the "controversial" play. Regardless, Weber won and I wish them the best of luck in representing Region 1.
Go Weber
Go Weber

with Anonymous. The penalty kick wasn't a hands ball, and it was a controversial play. However, that one play didn't cost Davis the game. Any good, state-champion worthy team should be able to rally themselves up after that play and win the game. It was a great game either way, and both keepers were fantastic! I don't think the article gave enough credit to the Davis goalie who ended up blocking 2 PK's in the game. Great job guys! And let's go Weber!

Since the PK was in the first half and the Davis team ended up equalizing then I don't think that you can necessarily say that it cost Davis the game. But who knows what would have happened had the PK, which most people agree was not a good call, not been given? There is no way of knowing for sure and that is a shame. It did change the game and I think that is what the coach was getting at. Had the PK not been given it would have been 2-1 for Davis, but that's not the way things work. It was a great and exciting game. Go Weber!!! Represent Boys!!!!!!

I know how much it must have hurt those Davis players to lose in a shootout- But I take exception to the Davis Coach saying "the call int eh first 20 minutes cost them the game"? So what happened the rest of the way? And what happened when Weber scored what should have been the game winner only to have the goal taken away by another mystery Hand Ball? Both teams played so well and both should be proud , but Its WEBER moving on and the Davis coach should be a better example to his players by not making excuses.

There was a hands ball in the Weber box because we all saw it and my son was right there when it hit the hand. He said he called it. How ever Weber did out play Davis in this game but the out come could of been different if the center ref wouldn't of been so bad. He was the worst yet. The hands ball the ref called on Davis was just a bad call period. There wasn't a person there who saw a hands ball. Too bad for Davis they have had some really bad refs this year that cost them some games. The farther North you go the worse the refs are. Davis is a talented team with a great goalie. JT Webster did an awesome job in goal this game.
Good luck Weber you really played well against Davis
and you wanted this game more than Davis.

Why should the davis kid have even gotten a card in the first place? He didn't do a thing the weber kid was the one who tried to hit the davis kid.

First of all. I have never heard of hands ball. It's hand ball. And if the ball hits the hand you don't call that a foul. If you have never been a referee, I say to you shut up! The game is over and done. You can't change the out come of the game. If you don't have any referees you don't have a game. Let the coach do the coaching and the kids need to play and referees call the game. All you have to do is watch a good game.

I agree with most of the comments thus far. The Soccer Refs are a problem NO MATTER where you live. Yeah, maybe the further North you go the worse they get, but they are just as bad in Salt lake too.
I am not a Soccer Ref--but I DO officiate High School sports--so I understand the mindset of these individuals. It absolutely infuriates me how bad the situation is in Utah Soccer. They generally get lined-out of position to make the call, rarely depend upon the AR's to help make the appropriate calls, are old or out-of-shape and can't keep up with the much more athletic players, and then when you say something--ANYTHING--from the sidelines they are thin skinned and want to toss you out.
I agree withe UHSAA's decision to put the screws to the sport this year--I believe it has made a difference--but they should have put an equal amount of pressure on the Ref's too, including an evaluation system that ranks the types of officials that Davis experienced in the game against Riverton & Weber.
When Referee's make the game-deciding call, like last year's 5A Final PK, it's a travesty & everyone loses!
Good Luck to all.
