The real bonus that Dolan and his cronies deserve is unemployment. I'm not sure the benighted citizens of Sandy will give them that award, but there's always hope.

Tempest in a tea pot. Disclose and post on the city's website the public tax dollar employees incentives and move on. The Administration was wrong to hide this information from the public.

Open and full disclosure will improve the city's efficiency.

could care less about this. Look at the article. No major outpouring of negative comments to the city. Just another keep it up attitude and doing whatever your want. Sandy citizens sure like the status quo and will continue to vote him in. All is Well in Sandy and as stated, the status quo will not change next time Dolan is up for Mayor.

Sandy has the lowest taxes in SL County, is the 34th safest U.S. city of its size, had a high on its resident satisfaction survey, and is an all around great place to live and work. Sandy must be doing something right. Perhaps that is why there has been a collective yawn about this story.

D-News: What was the source on this story? The SL Trib?
Real Problem | 9:52 p.m. May 18, 2008
The real problem has been the secrecy of the bonus program. Secondary has been the lopsided and top heavy nature of how bonuses have been handed out.

First and foremost, government checkbooks need to be OPEN to the taxpaying public. Concerns about "ID theft" are bogus. Knowing a salary amount (or very narrow range) will NOT help with ID theft. Indeed, getting the police to routinely enforce immigration laws would do FAR more to reduce the risks of ID theft than keeping the compensation of government employees secret.

Next, bonuses need to be reserved for extra performance. If an employee is getting the same bonus year after year, simply make the case that his salary ought to be increased.

Finally, in terms of government employment, I think bonuses really ought to be reserved for lower level employees. There is just too much chance to abuse or game the system when department heads are eligible.

But mostly, stop hiding city finances. Good programs do find under the light of full disclosure. Only something bad needs to be hidden.
Buried Deep | 1:01 a.m. May 19, 2008
The point that everyone is missing is that if these leaders are so willing to conceal this boondoggle, what else have they hidden from us?

Remember they tried to conceal this information for 4 years worth of attorney costs!

Unless there is accountability, the citizens of sandy can expect the next one to be buried even deeper.
