For Brother Schroder and Family,
I can not imagine what trials that one would have to go through with the Hollywood industry. But, one would need to give credit to anyone who grows to show a stregnth of moral values, LDS or not. We congratulate you, and wish you many of God's blessings in the future.

Nice to Know! It is wonderful to know when anyone embraces the gospel. This family can now be together forever. We are blessed to have such lovely truths to guide us.

Interesting to see that many come to know the gospel because of a member spouse (myself included).
Good actor | 8:35 a.m. May 18, 2008
I know he is usually viewed as a child actor but I have really liked him in his adult roles. Probably the first movie I ever cried in was that boxing movie years and years ago. I think that was his very first movie. I also like to see when people just view the Church and religion in general as a strength and support system in their lives and can presumably set aside all the difficult questions of history and doctrine. I am still working at it but that part is tough for me. I wonder how many engagements came out of the massive single adult gathering this weekend?

He's just one of a few famous Mormons that does not mind saying he is LDS or afraid to admit it. I wonder how many famous "closet" mormons there are? I hope "IF" any, they would grow a spine and not care what the general public, non-LDS, thinks of their beliefs, just like I don't care what other people think of mine...lol

I am proud of Bro. Schroder's ability to blend his spirituality with the life of being an actor. I love to hear stories of members thriving in non-traditional mormon careers. I must say this is more interesting than meeting another mormon lawyer or accountant. I hope he has continued success.

What a wonderful story. Not only for LDS, but for people who have dreams. We should all be striving to develop our talents and to help our children to also do that. I wish he would come speak in St. George.
question | 10:26 a.m. May 18, 2008
So is it okay to be an active member but be in questionable films that are rated R or detour from our standards. Because John Heder sure has and he is supposes to be this good LDS byu grad kid. Just for the record LDS people who get to go stardom will not live the standards because they are sellouts to the industry over their religon. Look at he Osmonds, serious marital problems, mulitiple divorces and anyhting to get on TV mentality. Great Role models.
Brother Chuck Schroeder | 10:36 a.m. May 18, 2008
Perhaps we'll have a movie now in Hollywood, that'll "over-ride" all the other bad movies, and send them all a message. Way to go son.

Nice story but do we really care that he's an assistant exectuve secretary? Why is that relevant?

the section of the paper you are speaking about is the MORMON TIMES, we are interested. Why do you read it if you don't want to hear of such wonderful accomplishments?

In his talk did he happen to mention what led him to join the Church? I would have liked to read more details about his conversion.
Lynne | 12:34 p.m. May 18, 2008
To Babe, I agree with anonymous; it's wonderful to read about members of the church; particularly those who are "celebrities" but I don't see many other stories of members mentioning a particular calling. Is Donny Osmond a bishop? What's Marie's calling? How about Orrin Hatch, Harry Reid, Bob Bennet, Gladys Knight, etc. You get the point. The idea is that we should all be examples and be willing to share our testimonies and conversion stories with others which Brother Schroeder and his wife did so beautifully; it matters little to me and apparently to anonymous, that he's an assistnat executive secretary. FYI, I teach Relief Society just in case that's important.
Major Crush | 12:36 p.m. May 18, 2008
The only reason I even read this story is that I had a major crush on Ricky Schroder back in the day.
I want every other woman posting to fess up and admit the same thing. You only care because he's cute and you used to dream about being Mrs. Schroder one day.
Who's disappointed to hear about Andrea?
And did you know that Walt Disney's wife was a Mormon? But not Wilford Brimley.
And Rick is still super cute.

That comment you made was just flat out stupid!!!
Just because people are LDS, does that mean we wont have trials? Like a Divorce???? It does happen, to good active people. You don't live in Marie Osmonds skin, you don't know what her personal life is like, so DON'T JUDGE HER......or any other Osmond, or HUMAN for that matter.
The Osmond family has been a great role model for everyone else, but they DO have trials.
Your living in a glass house dear!

Oh, do people actually read the articles in the Mormon Times? I only read these comments for amusement. Personally, I think it's a complete joke that an unbiased newspaper would have such a section. I guess that pretty much sums up the credibility of the DN as a legitimate newspaper. Some might even call it propaganda. Of course the thought police won't allow this to be published.

Dear Question...
I am glad everything in your life is sooo peachy. Divorce and hard times effect everyone whether you are in the music or movie making industry or not. Each of us have difficult things to go through in life, the hardest part about being in these industries is the fact that personal hardships become frontline tabloid news.
Personally, I feel that anyone reaching out to help and uplift another should be celebrated, this is what Christ would want us to do for each other anyway.

Anyone catch him in the remake of the Andromedia Strain?
How do you explain that to the bishop?
"Umm I played the role of a gay man"...
Or that he plays in a majority of R rated movies since 2000...

give me a break.... | 6:17 p.m. May 18, 2008
Come on, people. How naïve do you have to be? Who cares if he "played" a gay man in a role! So what if he appears in a R rated movie! Get over it, it’s just a job and actors have very little control over the “rating” of movies anyway--that occurs after the editing is complete. Script changes and editing can easily end up changing “R” ratings to “PG-13” and vice-versa. There is no LDS doctrine that mandates an actor can’t work in a R rated movie, or that I can’t go and see one. Teachings and recommendations are not the same as doctrinal requirements. You are judging him based on your own self-serving, narrow-minded moral attitudes. Typical Utah Mormons---thankfully, there are LDS in 49 other states who are level-headed and a lot less judgemental.

Hey Babe said: "Some might even call it propaganda."
the very nature of any and every news outlet is to deliver OROPAGANDA of one sort or another.
I choose to receive PROPAGANDA that is not in conflict with my beliefs.
I am happy to see people whine about the LDS-influenced DESNEWS on these commentaries.
It shows me YOU are being impacted by PROPOAGANDA I believe in and like.
I hope we inf;uence you someday. Isn't that the aim of any newspaper?

You said:"Typical Utah Mormons---thankfully, there are LDS in 49 other states who are level-headed and a lot less judgemental."
Actually, this is very typical Mormon thinking everywhere, not just in Utah. It's the programming of short-sightedness and better than you type of attitude that Hinckley worked to remove from all of LDS members.
Hinckley knows it's something that's ingrained in LDS members for a long time already, and he had made it a point to change it, but it's in the blood of the members and will take a generation or two for it to change, if it even does change.
So, even though there are people like you who can actually think with truth, but unfortunately, for the most part, Pres Hinckley knows better.

Information out of Wikipedia
The Deseret News is a newspaper published in Salt Lake City, Utah, and is Utah's oldest continually published daily newspaper. It has the second largest daily circulation in the state behind The Salt Lake Tribune. The Deseret News is owned by Deseret News Publishing Company, a subsidiary of Deseret Management Corporation, which is a for-profit business holdings company owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (widely known as the Mormon or LDS Church).
So Darlin, welcome to an LDS newspaper.

It's noteworthy to see so many Mormons proud of the fact that Ricky Schroder is LDS. Seriously? Ricky Schroder? The lists of "famous" Mormons is short and obscure. Creativity does not thrive well in the LDS culture.
James | 7:52 p.m. May 18, 2008
It is a great time to be LDS. I can see the growth and influence of the church. The anger and bitterness to the church only shows the level of interest and solidifies my testomony. In the end; the bitter, jealous and unfortunate will one day have a chance to choose if they want to my brothers and sisters. In this lifetime however; please choose to stick to those of your like mind and stop trying to influence or tear down gods plan and his children--it is obviously not working at astronomical rate the church is growing.
To: Give me a break... | 8:02 p.m. May 18, 2008
The teaching and recommendation comes from the Prophets and you need to follow his council,if you believe he is a prophet. Everyone, no matter where they live should not watch "R-Rated" movies! I do not think the people who go against the Prophet are level-headed, I think they are giving themselves excuses to do what they know is wrong. There is right and wrong...do you believe that?

Once Famous | 8:40 p.m. May 18, 2008
I used to be quite famous and did not care much for it. Others thrive in the limelight. One's level of fame is independent of religious conviction. I applaud anybody, famous or not, who has the conviction and courage to convert to the LDS faith. That's because of the massive misinformation that is constantly spread about Mormonism. Currently there is a great deal of confusion in the pubic eye between the main-stream LDS church and the polygamous off-shoot that was raided in Texas. One of you readers commented that you are still working through questions regarding the church's history and doctrine. Take heart -- I worked through these issues myself and could probably help you. A couple of principles: Do not base a testimony on a falsehood (such as the prophet is always infallible or evolution is false or all R-rated movies are bad). And don't accept the word of critics on points of doctrine and history until you check the real facts. Maintain and strengthen your faith by living the gospel, praying and studying and attending church. Your faith will be stronger as you work through your questions.

Nice, we now officially have the Ricky Schroder train wreck in full order.
1. We have the Utah LDS and the non-Zion variety attacking each other.
2. We have the righteous LDS attacking the ‘less than righteous’ LDS.
3. We have the LDS and non-LDS attacking each other.
Nice job all. Are we fighting for Ricky Schoders soul or is he just the latest battle ground for the demented culture that the LDS church has created her in ‘Zion’?
Not very Christian of anyone who has commented to the content of the article as I find very little bit of Christianity in Utah and this article and comments very well represent my experience. It is all about culture, statue and the “I am right syndrome because I have been told it from birth.” Very sick and very cultish and it is now time to move on.

We had some famous people in our Ward when I was growing up (Randy Bachman of BTO). His son, Tal went on to became a relatively well known musician as well. Tal was a Gospel Doctrine teacher, but has since left the church with his entire family after "magnifying" that calling and discovering some disturbing historical inconsistencies.

to "question": wow, quite judgmental you are being in your statements. LDS people have all the same trials as anyone else; perhaps even more because active, faithful lds are striving to live the commandments so Satan works even harder on them. Why go after the ones doing evil already-Satan already has them in their grasp. And for the record: I am a member of the Church due to the outstanding example of the Osmonds. I joined in 1972 at the age of 15 and have never regretted it. I love the gospel of Jesus Christ and His Church more than words can say! I also still love and admire the Osmonds for I see by their example they are doing their best to live the Church's standards. I will forever be a fan and forever be grateful to them for being my first missionaries. I admire any actors (or singers) who try their best to be good people and live their beliefs. Not many out there like that. So "question"...lighten up and look for the good in others, and you may find more good in yourself.

My goodness there was no substance to the article based on the headline and furthermore the headline was laughable as it tabbed him as 'currently' being mormon. Not a well written article nor faith promoting in any respect.
comment | 10:13 p.m. May 18, 2008
Latter Day Saints love to collect names of Hollywood types who are members of the church. Its what they have always done and probably continue to do so. I think it has to do with the notion that famous Latter Day Saints will some how project their beliefs to the general public, become a good icon for the good name of the church and help non members find their way to the truth. If I can tell my non member friends that ole Donny and Marie are members of the church and my friend is a fan of the Osmonds then that will some how make the church look good to my non member friend. Its a missionary tool. Alot of members use the tool. But just because the pope is catholic does not make me want to join the catholic church and the pope is very famous. The church loves the Hollywood connection.

Tal Bachman is nothing but a bitter, angry individual who does nothing but regurgitate the same old pointless and stupid attacks people have been making against the LDS Church for years. In his interview and Internet posts, Bachman clearly has no joy in his life, except when it comes to head slamming the LDS Church and its members.
I wonder if Bachman left the LDS Church because his music career dried up and he decided to blame the church, rather than his own lack of talent.
It's as simple as this. When Ed Decker, Sandra Tanner and Steve Benson have spoken, the thinking has been done.

how some want to try to put a negative spin on this story. Just because Ricky is LDS does not make the church any more or less true. It is still the same true Church.

So, what's next? Brad Pitt as Elder's Quorum President, or Steven Spielberg as High Counselman?
What about Martha Stewart as Stake Relief Society President?
I'd love to see Dustin Hoffman as Sunday school teacher. And Angelina Jolie as Primary teacher.
