Hopefully she will get a chance to prove herself again. High School sports are a joke. Good luck Aly.

Sounds like she wanted speacial treatment. She is not able to play all year, then because some college is there to watch her she wants to play a round or two to get looked at. how fair is that to the girl whose spot she was taking. Sounds pretty selfish to me, taking a spot she did'nt earn. Everyone must make a sacrifice once in awhile. Maybe it was her turn. I will side with the other people in the region. So sad.

Tingey rocks. Be nice.
UN fair | 3:21 p.m. May 19, 2008
Special treatment? She wasn't breaking any rules that were in place and between the match and the state championship tournament, other coaches tried to implement their own new rules to keep her from playing. As a high school sport, all coaches should give EVERY able athlete the chance to further their education. Taking away scholarship opportunities is denying that. There is no rule that says any athlete needs to choose between sports. Aly has played golf, basketball, and softball since she was a freshman and had already earned spots on those teams and deserved to play. It is not her fault that she was not able to play in every match. She should have had the same opportunity that the other golfers had but she was denied that by coaches who were afraid of her ability.
just a thought | 5:14 p.m. May 19, 2008
Coaches look more at performances in Jr Golf than they do at high school matches.

I have never met this girl and don't even like golf, but this whole thing with the principals not allowing her score from the Davis Park is just silly. It's not like like anyone was hurt or anyone was being negatively influenced. It sounds like these principals are a bunch of power hungry knuckleheads. Let her have the score. Man, these rules get silly sometimes. I know rules need to be enforced, but at the same time this is a new sport and there could have been some adjustments in the thinking about the rules on that occasion. Just my humble opinion.
Here's another thought for you.. | 8:07 p.m. May 19, 2008
Aly had already talked to the SUU coach and other coaches who told her to play in the Region match and also the state tournament. Yeah they can see her in Jr golf too but they told her to do these tournaments in the first place.
Bad Decision | 9:23 p.m. May 19, 2008
This reminds me of the probation put on boys soccer this year...principals making decisions based on ZERO knowledge of athletics. The fact that a student wasn't allowed to play both sports is joke. How is it special treatment to allow a student to participate in more than one sport?
Not equitable treatment | 11:22 p.m. May 19, 2008
This problem actually started last fall when the UHSAA decided to start a high school girl's golf league. Although I'm all for Title 9, when a sport that has been played in the fall by both sexes is suddenly only available to girls in the spring, the girls that had been playing with the boys, should have been "grandfathered in" or in other words, given the option to choose to either play with the boys in the fall or with the girls in the spring. Aly was not given this option which limited her opportunities. Three days before fall golf tryouts, Aly was told that she couldn't tryout for the team. Aly has made the SF golf team for the past three years where she has successfully competed with boys. Aly is an amazing golf, softball, and basketball athlete. There is no reason she should have to limit her talents to one sport. She had permission by UHSAA to play in the region and state golf tournaments. They should have stood by their original decision to let her play, rather than allow a few coaches to "bully" them into changing their decision because these coaches felt threatened by Aly's abilities.
SF Softball Fan | 11:44 p.m. May 19, 2008
Aly is arguably the best center fielder in the state. Possibly the most under rated player on the team. Two more home runs last week at state. The kid's a player. Forget golf for the moment and its whining coaches. Go Spanish. Take state.
Irony | 8:29 a.m. May 20, 2008
What's ironic about all of this is the ones who pushed to keep her out of golf were from Timpanogos, the same school that brings in all of its baseball players to run track at state and region. Maybe we should call it hypocritical.
Region 4 | 9:50 a.m. May 20, 2008
My observations of the people who run Region 4 athletics is that they are a joke. This is just another example. What other region plays play-in games on a team's home field rather than a neutral site? In this case, if she is a student in good standing at the school and the golf coach wants to user her, why should anyone in the region even have a vote? This is supposed to be competitive and its just too bad for the other schools that she happens to be good.
WHAT? | 11:00 a.m. May 20, 2008
dear fair,
first of all you need to get the whole story. she was eligiable and able to play. the whole things comes down to what is best for the Utah athletes. yes, lets just let all the out of state athletes get the scholarships because we are too ignorant to support our own Utah High school athletes. Aly playing golf at a college can only help the future girls golf program in utah maybe by her playing the schools will look at her and say " hey, utah county may be some place to look for girl golfers.
but you, "FAIR", do not have a clue what high school athletics should be about. If this was someone you knew you would probably feel differently. but you really should look at the big picture here.
You go Aly and make your mark at what ever sport you can and Good Luck in the future. People who I have heard talk about this are in your corner.

a river little girl.... why, because you can't have it all your way all the time!!! Do you ever think of anyone but yourself?
Softball mom | 1:55 p.m. May 20, 2008
Asa mother of a student athlete I am ashamed to say that I live in region 4. When did we decide that winning or shall we say our fear of losing comes before the athletes. Aly should have been allowed to play golf. This was not a ploy to pull in a ringer she has been on the roster all year- just not able to play. She is from Spanish Fork High School etc.
We need to put more emphasis on assisting our youth to succeed. What did the other schools gain from this? Nothing, but they lost some good old fashioned tough competition that just may have inspired their golfers to bring their A game to the table. Good luck Aly in you future endeavors

I Love Aly BUT..... | 4:04 p.m. May 20, 2008
Both sports require 100 percent focus she could and will be the best at what ever she chooses, but after coaching and following athletes for many many years, if she truly wants that competitive "razors edge" she need to focus where her true love lies! it's unfair to the other athletes who place 110% on the field or the green, every minute of every day, not to. I mean no disresect to Aly she is an exceptional athlete, but if she wants to be a elite athlete, it's time to get into one "zone" and push it!
anonymous | 9:45 a.m. May 21, 2008
Aly did not throw a fit to have it her way at all and yes she did think of others but herself. For a very long time she did think about the other girls and her teammates! You probably dont even know her so why dont you just get off her back? She is going to do amazing in whatever she chooses to do in college and she will give 100% to it. She is in high school for crying out loud! Let her have a good time and I say play everything you can!
REPLY TO CRY ME | 9:54 a.m. May 21, 2008
You know something? It's not about having it her way it's about doing what the rules allow her to do. No one is protesting athletes from playing baseball and then running track at the region meet or state.
Why don't you get your facts straight before you comment on this? Aly did not ask for special treatment. She only asked to get the same treatment that other athletes get. If you knew the state rule on playing in the High school athletics you would not have mad such a ridicules comment. If this athlete has the talent to compete in both sports she should be able too. You all seem to forget that she just wasn't allowed to go to state she had to qualify just like every other girl. And she did and they took it away from her. People who comment on this story need to know the WHOLE story. There was no special treatment she obeyed every state rule and because of some selfish coach. She was discrimnated against because she is good. She is not a little girl she is a very talented young women and deserves respect as an athelete.

Don't Question | 9:57 a.m. May 21, 2008
this girl's dedication. It's true that an athlete should focus on their chosen sports and put their effort there but high school used to be the place to find out what sport that was. I think it's great that Aly and other athletes have the ability to be great at more than one sport. Case in point: I hear Aly has options to play both golf and softball in college and not just one or the other. Because Aly didn't play in every golf match doesn't mean she is not dedicated. I personally know that she is on the golf course almost daily as soon as the snow melts and she still is a committed player to her softball team. Keep it up Aly, you CAN have it all.
I Agree | 9:59 a.m. May 21, 2008
I agree with the comment that each sport requires alot of work and dedication. Aly has played both sports for years. She just didn't all of the sudden start softball or golf. When it comes to giving 110% I am sure it will show as she competes. I don't see how it is unfair to the other athletes no matter what Aly still has to beat them.
Move on | 10:03 a.m. May 21, 2008
You know what? Let's put this too rest. This is a talented athlete who will go far no matter what she chooses to do. Let her move on and succeed in what ever sport she chooses. Good Luck Aly. Just always keep your dignity and respect and don't worry about what others think.
Whoa! | 10:08 a.m. May 21, 2008
To the person who posted "Cry Me": You obviously do not know Aly on a personal level. She would never try to take something that she didn't earn and she is the last person to try to "have it her way all the time." Aly is one of the sweetest girls I have ever met and hardly only thinks about herself. Give her a break. She's played for the last 3 years. It's not her fault that they changed the rules on her. She deserved to be in that tournament and because some of you are afraid of this little golfer, you took that away from her. Remember, if you don't beat the best, you aren't the best and Aly didn't get her chance to prove that. Talk about only thinking of yourself. I don't know if you are a student, a coach, a parent, or just a reader but you should think about what you say and remember: they're still kids.
Joe | 10:29 a.m. May 21, 2008
For any those of you that don't know Aly and are making false claims: she's one of the most dedicated athletes I've ever seen. She dedicates 100% of her time and effort to her team, teammates and coaches alike. It doesn't matter which sport is in season, Aly is there. She was obviously torn between golf and softball this year and it wasn't her decision as to when the matches were being played. As a high schooler, I regret picking one sport alone. If athletes can in high school, they should play every sport the have the opportunity to. Good Luck Aly.
Aly Fan | 12:09 p.m. May 21, 2008
Everyone who has had the opportunity to share the court, course, or diamond with this girl, whether against or as a teammate, knows she is as dedicated an athlete as there ever was. Personally I think the only person Aly was "selfish" with, was SHE herself! If she had dedicated as much time to only 1 sport that she did all 3, I can't even fathom the records she would've broken or how dominant she would've been at whichever sport she chose! But Aly is one of the few lucky girls who had tremendous talent and opportunity to play all 3 thanks to her personal drive and wonderful coaches, teammates, family and friends, who supported her as a multi-sport athlete. This beautiful young lady should be proud that she achieved all she did in her 4 years at SFHS. And with the unfortunate rise in students who are turning to alternative recreations, especially in our county, I would hope that all coaches, principals, athletic directors, etc. would want to make sure they all have the opportunity to achieve greatness in whatever way they can. It's sad that a few TRULY selfish people felt they needed to take that away.

Shame on those of you who were part of taking the chance away from this girl to maybe get a chance to go to college. I spoke to an athletic director who was not from Spanish Fork and he was also ashamed that coaches who are suppose to be in this for the kids would do this to her,
good job Aly we are all very proud of you!!!
