It was a great game, NOT one of Viewmont's better showings but as it is always said,"True winners get things done, and it's always better to be lucky than good. The difference in the game was when Viewmont's Cook FINALLY started to take control of the game, very dormant for 2/3 the game but when the going got tough... well the team came through. Kudos to Alta, bummer that they had to come up against the Vikes in the Semis instead of the finals as it should have been. My prediction for the next game, Viewmont... they had to beat Jordan and Alta while Brighton has had to coast along in their bracket.
Kick Picks | 6:15 a.m. May 21, 2008
Thanks Viewmont...you worried me there when you guys went down 1-0, but you came through for me to make sure my Kick Picks stayed accurate. I knew you guys would win for me.

Soccer Fan how can you say the final should have been Viewmont vs Alta when Alta finished the season behind Brighton and Jordan? Give me a break! The teams that deserve to be in the final are in the final. Ask Brighton's players if they thought they coasted into the final. I was at the Weber vs Brighton game and it went down to the last seconds.
While waiting for the Weber vs Brighton game I was in the stands on the Alta side of the field while their game finished. The Alta fans I was sitting by were the worst examples of sportsmanship I have ever seen or heard. They are what is wrong with youth and high school sports, particularly soccer. Let's get some perspective people. I have to hand it to Alta's coach for putting his players in their place, when they also tried to attack the refs after the game. At least their is some class at Alta. Congratulations to Viewmont!

Colton? | 8:33 a.m. May 21, 2008
I like to more a little more about this Colton Cook. Sounds like he is having a great season? What competitive does he play for? Has he committed to a college? Is soccer even his main sport? I imagine if he does get MVP then all those details will be coming. Any way congratulations Viewmont, you’ve shown some true grit.

As a Viewmont alum, its good to see this team representing the school and the community so well.
Good luck guys, I will be rooting for you in the Championship!

colton cook just turned in his papers to serve in a LDS mission. so he's not doing any college for atleast two years

...but Taco Bell is sooo good.
WOW! | 10:09 a.m. May 21, 2008
I've been impressed so far with the writing up of all of these games, but not this one. The writer seemed to have turned one "small talk" conversation with Colton Cook into huge deal about Taco Bell. The fact is that Viewmont as a whole didn't get it done the first half with their defense keeping them in the game only down 1. But of course Viewmont comes back to knock off another Region 2 beast! Go Vikings!
Big Surprise... | 10:20 a.m. May 21, 2008
...Viewmont vs Brighton for the final. It is as it should be, it is as was predicted.
Here's another prediction....Viewmont 3-1 for the rings.

a lot of talk about cookie, and he is a great player, but I was very impressed w the full out play of Tyler A., he was leaving nothing on the field. It was a great team win for the Vikes, Wes, Tommy, Abe, Josh, Jordan, a great group of seniors....focus for tomorrow!
Blind | 11:12 a.m. May 21, 2008
I was at the game, and I was perfectly situated to see Cook's volley. While it was a masterful shot, there is no doubt that it should have been called back. I saw clear as day the hand ball that Alta complained about. At this level of competition, and in such an important game, calls like that should not be allowed to be missed. Its sad that the better team was prevented from possibly advancing (who knows how the game would have ended without Cook's goal) because of a missed, but obvious, call.
Anonymous | 11:30 a.m. May 21, 2008
I think the highlight of the game is when the ref admited that there was a handball on the goal, but that it wouldnt affect the outcome of the game. Go figure a goal wouldnt affect the outcome of the game. UHSAA needs to do a better job of finding competing refs.
ace | 12:13 p.m. May 21, 2008
talk about poor alta fans. Let's mention the Viemont fans who after the game were chanting "Overrated" to the Alta Players. What kind of poor sick sportsmanship does that exhibit. Alta fans were out of line and so were Viewmont Fans. Good luck Brighton! Brighton 2 Pukemont 0
soccernut | 12:22 p.m. May 21, 2008
Viewmont was terrible in the first half. Atla dominated the first half but failed to finish. Many bad calls by the refs that favored Viewmont and cost Alta the game with the handball right in front of the center refs face who was too afraid to make the right call. Viemont-rematch anytime anywhere. And who is this cookie. I saw nothing great from him in the game. Brighton will also dominate the game and the only way Viewmont will win is again by the 12th man (the ref.s).
re: Anonymous | 12:42 p.m. May 21, 2008
"Wouldn't affect the outcome of the game" oh how I wish I had a dollar for every stupid thing a ref has said. We had a ref say after he through a horrible red card (both teams acknowledged) that the game didn't matter any way because it was just region. Another one I read announced that he had "run out of yellow cards" and preceeded to throw three red cards...during a playoff game. How many times have the center ref blown off their sideline ref? Too many for me to count. On and on...
With statements like the above it makes you KNOW that the refs can have total control of the outcome of a game and they know it.
It shouldn't matter if it is a semi-final, playoff game, region, or pre-season. The games matter and should be officiated accordingly.

It's easy to make calls from the sidelines. But i feel that the state needs to re certify theses refs i think the game has passed alot of them by. It's alot faster and played at alot higher level than in the past. And they need to be cosistent some refs call a fouls if they look at each other wrong. And some refs short of running out ion the field with a baseball bat they won't call a thing.Alot of these kids know the game better than the refs which is wrong. In in a game this year one of our players was told i know they are fouling you but i'm only going to call the hard ones. So short of crippling the kid they had free reign on him.
excuses | 1:11 p.m. May 21, 2008
i know alta would complain about something. ofcoarse alta dominated the first half.. they had the wind. alta got a goal with the wind. and viewmont got 2 with the wind . viewmont won
Unbelievable | 1:18 p.m. May 21, 2008
Alta you played a amazing first half but must have spent all your engery. Viewmont was chasing and you dominated them. But what happened in the second half?. What is KL(the defender) doing setting up the goal for Viewmont right in front of the box? Have you not learned by now to clear the ball. Huge mental mistake that cost Alta the game. The missed handball call by the Ref. would not have mattered had you kept playing the entire second half of the game. Quit whining to the refs. and play the game. That game could have easily been yours. Viewmont your fans have no class.
fo sho | 1:19 p.m. May 21, 2008
Pukemont good-one.. and alta was overated Viewmont has the better record and the only reason they were fourth is because they lost to fremont late in the season which is because four of thier starters couldnt play..
There you are Alta Fans | 1:28 p.m. May 21, 2008
..I wondered when you guys would show up, and start making your Region 2 excuses.
Fact is, Viewmont beat you while playing one of their worst games. Now if that doesn't show how weak you are, not sure what will. A solid team would have put the game away in the 1st half, you just didn't have the man power.
Enjoy the view from the stands tomorrow.

Fans vs fans... | 1:35 p.m. May 21, 2008
Who cares about fans? The players can't control what their classmates do on the sideline. Also, at this level, if you can't handle a heckling fan, go cry to someone else, because its only going to get worse.
"You fans are classless, my fans yell", who cares, what was the score?

alta over rated? | 1:36 p.m. May 21, 2008
Not so.. They dominated play and looked to me to be the better team. Look at the stats sheet alta dominated posession and had twice as many shots on goal. It took a hand ball for cook to set the ball up perfectly for his volley. It was a badly officiated game from the start. Obvious out of bounds calls were given to the wrong team a few times! The two best teams in the state still are alta and brighton
Shame on you refs for such a badly officiated game

Viewmont's #1 | 1:39 p.m. May 21, 2008
Soccernut you ask who is this cookie? Well he was number 5 playing agianst you yesturday. He is a midfielder that won the game for Viewmont. Oh and one more thing once he came alive half way threw the second half you ALTA boys couldn't touch him or anyone eles on the VIEWMONT team. So maybe if you could stop blaming the refs and relize ALTA simply COULD NOT OR DID NOT get the job done Viewmont did.
Viewmont will become the next 5a state Champions. You should come see this COOKIE that everyone is talking about.

I expect Brighton will put you in your place like alta should have done in the first half! The fact is, luckily for Brighton, the best side didn't win.
Brighton 3 Viewmont 0

excuses | 1:42 p.m. May 21, 2008
Viewmont had the better record because they don't play anybody. Come on down to the strong Region 2 and play Brighton and Jordan in Region. Oh and by the way, Viemont only 2-1 on turf which you practice on and with home court.
re:soccernut | 1:50 p.m. May 21, 2008
no one likes a sore loser, and even worse is a sore loser who blames their loss on the officials. The calls good and bad always balence out, the officials don't care who wins the game. Alta you lost fair and square to the better team, get over it.....
Region 2 excuses | 1:56 p.m. May 21, 2008
First off i'm not sure what it means to have region 2 excuses. Region 2 has dominated all 5A sports since it formed. Escpecially soccer! Region 2 holds the last 3 state titles.. Region 2 is the stronger one and viewmont was lucky to get some help from that 12th man! (the ref)
The Center Ref | 2:07 p.m. May 21, 2008
We had the center ref last fall in a game that we found out was two blocks from his home and his daughter attended the school we were playing in the girls tourny. Ask the state to investigate, still waiting. The ref system is a good old boy network (weither male or female) My favorite was the Red Card last year to a player on Taylorsville for him lifting his shirt that said this one is for you MOM. Such a hienous crime to eliminate a player from their state tournament. Then to have refs blame coaches for all the problems. Or to put the boys programs on probation for to many reds? There needs to be a system to score and rank refs just like there is for teams. Start giving the cards out again that refs were judged by the coaches. Sure there are some that will vent on every ref but you would get a better system of review and then some younger or other refs could come in and get opportunity's.
oh no | 2:17 p.m. May 21, 2008
Re:soocernut you know you would be just as upset with the unbalanced calls. The calls do go both ways and unfortunately this game favored Viewmont. Not a suprise since the game was played in your region. Viewmont was the better team only with the help of the twelth man. Alta out played you all the first half and the second half was played poorly by both teams. The first goal was a gift from our defender who kindly teed up the ball in front of the goal and the second goal was courtesy from the center ref. Don't get to excited yet Brighton is going to trash you.
Strong region 1 | 2:18 p.m. May 21, 2008
What do you mean Viewmont didn't play any strong teams, how many region one teams advanced to the second round? ALL 5! Can any other region say that, I don't think so! Tommorrow's game belongs to the Vikings a team whose soccer excelence has been much overlooked in the past but whose future holds a trophy
A | 2:25 p.m. May 21, 2008
Just so you know in soccer just because the ball touches someones hand doesn't automaticlly make it a hand ball. Unless high school has different rules than competitive youth soccer. I wasn't at the game so i don't know about this instance but by FIFA rules if the ball touches the hand but doesn't change the direction of the ball a hand ball shouldn't be called.
Region 4 | 2:27 p.m. May 21, 2008
You guys fight like region 4! I thought you were better than that!
re: strong region 1 | 2:59 p.m. May 21, 2008
no one else can say that because your the only region that allowed 5 teams! All of region 2 advanced to the second round too. the teams left out of the playoffs from region 2 could have also contended for state. region 2 is by far the better region!!!!!!
re; A | 3:00 p.m. May 21, 2008
well if he traps it with his hand then it IS a hand ball!!!!!
Anonymous | 3:24 p.m. May 21, 2008
The ball took a bad bounce, the sun was in your eyes, the refs were against you, you only got to have the wind at your back during one half, your shoes were untied, you had a bad day, Bush is President, Osama hasn't been caught, gas prices are high,,,....any other excuses why Alta LOST to Viewmont!?!?!?!?
Anonymous | 3:29 p.m. May 21, 2008
Yes, IF someone traps the ball with their hand it is a hand ball, but that's NOT what happened!! LOOK at the replay over as many times as you want and as slow or as fast as you want. It was NOT a hand ball. Stop crying Alta you had a good year.
WOW!!! | 3:51 p.m. May 21, 2008
Wow! Whine, whine, whine....both sides!! Can't we just say good job? These are HS students playing a GAME! You would think by now you would realize that life isn't always fair, and things don't always go the way you want. GET OVER IT! Life goes on!
It's sad that in competition someone must lose, but why compete if you can't handle the heat? WOW!
It was a good game to watch! Both teams have great talent. Thursday should be an entertaining evening with good teams competing. Best of luck to all!

Anyone who was at that game would tell you he brought the ball down with his hand! Good season alta dont let it get you down.. The best team didn't advance. It will be fun watching viewmont get thrashed by brighton who like alta will control the tempo of the game.
Brighton will finally get their long awaited rings and it will be the fourth straight region 2 soccer championship!

Yep, we already tested Jordan then Alta.....next.
Keep telling yourself that Region 2 is stronger.

The Sad Part | 4:26 p.m. May 21, 2008
Yes both teams were talanted. The sad part is the teams arent the ones that decided the outcome. The ref taunted the players as he came off the field. He is the one that showed no class. He is too out of shape to be reffing a competitive sport also.
Viewmont Parent | 4:41 p.m. May 21, 2008
I have to admit I was scared to death watching Alta control the ball, the passing the whole game. I thought our boys had the advantage having played on turf and playing so close to home. I did not see the energy from our players that I expected to see. I give a lot of credit to Alta for how well you controlled the game. Sometimes games are not won by the best team. I would not want to play you in a rematch. I would like to apoligize for the bantering of the Viewmont Fans after the game. I guess a win was not good enough and I was embrassed by their chanting "Over Rated". I hope we can show more class tomorrow when we get rolled by Brighton.

one of the most entertaining games i have seen! alta clearly was a better/more talented team, but viewmont showed lots of heart! viewmont had lots of luck too. and u need luck on your side to win. although i do not like viewmont, it is their time to take state....they dont have any special or any high quality players, but they work hard and play as a team. it is just their time for a state championship. luck is on their side.
viewmont 2-1 brighton
although brighton in my view is the best team this year, i think they will overlook viewmont. they will keep the same mentality in their heads as they always have.....that they play for brighton, so they think they are top quality. but that is where brighton is always wrong. they overlook and become overconfident in themselves

RE: Funny | 4:47 p.m. May 21, 2008
I dont have to tell myself I already know Region 2 is better. Year after year of winning and dominating Region 1 has proven that. It will be proven again tomorrow against the sucky lucky Vikings.
the game | 5:25 p.m. May 21, 2008
when it all comes down to it- its all about gettting the ball in the back of the net. they dont give wins for possesion- you get wins for putting the ball in the back of the net. which viewmont did.....twice. i thought alta had a strong offense.. whats with this lone goal?
GO VIKES!!! | 5:44 p.m. May 21, 2008
so alta you played great against us vikings. it just you didn't play hard enough. you dominiated most of the game but couldn't get the ball in the back of the net more. by the way it should have been 3-1 for the vikings. the very first goal over the keepers head, number 13 didn't nothing. if you look at the pictures for the article online #13 is in the goal as the ball is in front of the keeper. he just sucked and missed it. way to go viewmont and win brighton and take state. Thats right!!!!!!!!

5) Davis county has an edge in quality as they are represented this year in both 5A and 4A finals.
Sandy doesn't have a 4A school they are all 5A. All three of them are in the top 5 in the state. Davis county as proven in the past is not yet up to par with the elite teams of sandy city(which is the soccer capital of utah)
MY PREDICTION
Sandy city and region 2 bring home their 4th straight title! Brighton over viewmont 3-1

Soccer is a beautiful game, because it does not have timeouts or instant replay. It is simply a game of improve and who can capitalize on what is given. The truth about the game is Viewmont nearly handed Alta the game in the first half but because of great play of a few defenders and keeper Josh Nordfelt, they only scored once. Alta most likely did have twice as many shots if not more, but why isn't the score different? Great defense by Viewmont gave their offense time to get the game back into their own hands and do what they do best, score! And to all those in love with region 2, where are 2 out of 3 of your top teams (Jordan & Alta) . . oh yeah, they got knocked out, by VIEWMONT! GO VIKINGS!
re:howay the lads | 7:13 p.m. May 21, 2008
Interesting comment since Bountiful HS a Davis county team that has been in the finals of 4A the last 3years tied brighton 1-1, and Jordan 3-3 in the preseason isn't yet up to par w sandy. Bountiful has 7 state championships in soccer, nobody in the state (especially sandy city)has even half that amount save WX who has 6 (another Davis county team). It's in the record books that Davis County or Bountiful City is the Soccer Capital of Utah. Check your stats "howay" before you make a fool of yourself next time....
