I agree- you should be the hero, fighting for our country...this is why Utahn's have their "Idol Worshipping" in the wrong place. All he did was sing on television...big woos.
re: whocares | 10:36 a.m. May 21, 2008
Perhaps we had no bubbles for you but all the time you were gone we were praying for you. Glad you made it home. We will continue to pray for you...
We enjoy David's singing but owe you much more. The bubbles pop but our gratitude to you will last a lifetime. Thanks for what you did.

CELEBRATE ~ | 10:39 a.m. May 21, 2008
There is nothing wrong with Celebrating over someone's successes - I love my country and I appreciate the Hero's fighting for our country, but that doesn't mean we should stop living at home - We should support each other - that's what makes this country great -
LET'S CELEBRATE GOOD THINGS!!!
LET'S CELEBRATE GOOD THINGS!!!
Curious... | 10:54 a.m. May 21, 2008
Cook performed "Dream Big", one of the finalists in the songwriting contest. Isn't that a copywrited title for Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band? Surely it was not the same song, although I didn't hear the actual performance. Or was it Shupe's song??

Sour grapes? Get over it and think of someone else besides yourselves. I have a son who spent time in Iraq and when he came home, it wasn't to a hugh party either. But then he didn't need it. His pride for having served his country and done something for someone else was sufficient. His satisfaction with what he had done was all he needed.
Get over it | 11:17 a.m. May 21, 2008
I commend ANYONE who fights for our freedom, but of all the things you can complain about, you choose a positive role model who can be a positive role model for millions and say that you should've received a hometown bubble welcome too?!?! Yeah, the world is sad, but raining on someone elses parade isn't going to make you feel any better. If you really don't care, don't make comments and don't read articles that aren't about YOU 'cause obviously that's who you are thinking about and having a self pity party with. And...just for the record, rooting for someone and wishing them the best is NOT the same as "IDOL WORSHIPPING" as you so eloquently put it. I know you don't think singing on TV is big, but hey...you aren't doing it. Give credit when it's due and that is to BOTH David A and the soldier. You are both great and needed in a world as negative and horrible as this, okay? 'NUF SAID

Whocares,
I've been deployed three times, buddy. Here's what I say - this is not your pity party, it's DA's celebration. If you're feeling down, get some help from your chaplain or a counselor. I hate to see these forums get commandeered by people with agendas or axes to grind.
Bottom Line - WAY TO GO, DAVID!!! You are awesome. You represent my home state of Utah well. You represent the LDS Church well. You represent your family well. Superb job. And the best thing of all - you show the recording industry and music lovers everywhere that celebrity and fame and money are not what matters most in life. You show the world that a nice guy can sing decent, uplifting music and that there are many who want to hear it and buy it.
That's a message the world needs. That's worth publishing in this newspaper. So kudos to David and to DesNews.

Wow did you tell your son to "Get over it" too? Soldiers have done more for you than David Archuleta will ever in his entire lifetime. If he goes on a mission and then serve in the military, then he should earn his "pride". Until then you are idolizing a hack who is glorifying himself only.

I don't watch the show, so I am curious. Don't the lyrics to the song Imagine say something like imagine there is no heaven, or hell, or possessions, or countries? Did this kid really sing those lyrics? Isn't there a contradiction between the message of the song and the message of Mormonism?
His music? | 12:40 p.m. May 21, 2008
How come the article says "his music"? Not a single thing that he sang was his. He can sing very well but nothing has been "his" besides his voice. Why should he get so much credit for other people's work? I give the kid props because he does have an incredible voice but I want to see how he does when songs are written for him and he has to write some and see if he can actually make music or just sing music. Good luck to David A in his career.

Stenar | 1:31 p.m. May 21, 2008
He sings the parts which say, "Imagine no possessions... no need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man... Imagine all the people sharing for the world..."
He does NOT sing the lines about no heaven, no hell nor no religion.
Personally, I agree with John Lennon and wish there were no religion.

David A. was out of this world last night! Enjoying someone's success and applauding their great efforts is not "idol worshipping." Are all of you sour-pusses really that upset or is it just because David A. is a good looking, obedient, clean-cut, talented, and hard working mormon kid. What is your beef? David A. IS the kind of role model I want for my kids!
Messed up | 2:04 p.m. May 21, 2008
Wow I hate to think what the kids life is going to be like years down the road. To much money, and pride can really change people. I feel bad for David's real friends. This kids life is CHANGED that's all I got to say.
Yes Messed UP indeed | 2:46 p.m. May 21, 2008
Why wasen't he this much worshipped by Utah before American Idol??!! Didn't he have the same "spiritual" "amazing" "dreamboat" voice?
Utah are sellouts.
Utah are sellouts.
Jill from Las Vegas | 2:52 p.m. May 21, 2008
I say "congratulations" to David. He has obviously worked very hard to get where he is at. How many 17 year old kids now-a-days have this same work ethic? Not enough! I think it is great that his city and state are so supportive of him.
Good grief | 3:16 p.m. May 21, 2008
Many of you are off in the ozone. This is a kid who is a good role model. He is very humble. Why complain. It's ok for us to "worship" tatooed, overpaid athletes, but not a kid who has simply shared his talent in a big way. We should all be proud of him and what he has accomplished.

To all the veterans above: THANK YOU for your service to our country! You have my heartfelt gratitude and admiration.
I thought David A.'s performances last night were absolutely breathtaking. Thank you again to the vets who expressed their appreciation for David's beautiful voice. I'm glad you were uplifted by his music too and for realizing that admiration for David does not in any way diminish our thankfulness for you and your service.
Good job vets, good job David!

I totally agree | 4:40 p.m. May 21, 2008
I totally agree with good grief. Look at all of the athletes such as Kobe Bryant (that cheated on his wife) they put on television ads with children and pass off as role models. This is the kind of so called "role models" people should complain about. My eight year old grandaughters love David A., and I would much rather see them "worship" someone like him. It is exciting to see a local talent go so far and do as well as David has, especially one we can all be proud of.
Craig | 5:19 p.m. May 21, 2008
Many athletes are very young people who share their talents in a big way. They achieve fame and riches exhibiting their talent just like David Archuleta. Many of them share their wealth and give time to good causes in the community. Yes, some of them also tatoo their bodies. Does that make them less worthy of our admiration? By all accounts David Archuleta is a good singer and attracts people on the stage. It remains to be seen what he will do with his new found fame and presumably riches. I think putting this kid up as a role model for kids is kind of silly. It can create some unreal expectations.
rebecca | 6:00 p.m. May 21, 2008
he is so cute!!!! He seems like a nice guy even though I don't know him
Re: I totally agree | 6:24 p.m. May 21, 2008
Typical Utah comment. you should see your granddaughters "worship" the lord, not "someone like him" (David A). Just sickening.

I'd like to point out the word IDOL in American Idol.
It really is as it sounds. People idolize him. I can shout the name Arlen Specter R-Pa, or Patrick Leahy D-Vt, The LDS Church and Catholic Church(And many more) do more charity for the world and get hated still. I'm not talking that people aren't joining up with their beliefs only that millions more know who David Archuleta then Thomas S. Monson. Who has done more for the world?
What has David Archuleta done for the world?
More Americans give attention to American Idol than the United States Presidential election.
People in the world are focusing on China and Myanmar while America thinks about the next idol.
It's worse than that. SO MANY people now just say they hate politics and politicians are evil. While I'll agree that corruption is often high, it can only take over if we simply allow it to.
People are hating what is good more and more and loving things that have no effect on our lives and our happiness.
I don't have ANYTHING against David A. but when millions love their T.V. and idols more than actually important things, there is something wrong.

Something to add here. Whether you are LDS, whether you are Christian; I believe any person of good conscience would agree with this.
"We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things."
The Thirteenth Article Of Faith

The United States Constitution
One internet search for the word "Constitution" will allow anyone to read this. I have met 2 other people in my life who have actually read it. I am not ignorant and I know there are more people in the U.S. who have, but not many.
It is very true that America is loosing its purpose. People should be ringing every bell of attention in the public to our current state and the healing it needs.
All who say they hate politics ought to say they hate themselves for that very reason. This is a true & worthy statement.
