The Y should make the college world series in the next couple of years with all of the incoming talent.
Mark B. | 7:03 a.m. May 22, 2008
How can you forget something that you never heard of in the first place?
Take what we can... | 7:05 a.m. May 22, 2008
Let this one slide under that table. Bad season. Hey at least they beat Utah when in counted. It's great that the Deseret Duel trophy was won with a 12 run inning. Love it! Of course u fans say its a silly thing, but they also say the MWC is a poor league when they don't win too.

you are kidding right..they let better talent get out of the state than they bring in..there are kids in utah that are better than players playing presently at the Y...face it...
Gretzky | 7:31 a.m. May 22, 2008
I love baseball, don't get me wrong. However, if the Y administration wants to put another sport on the map and do it quickly with national championship level results like the men's volleyball team, then it's time to invest in ice hockey just like Air Force has done. Harvard, Boston College (this year's NCAA Div 1 champ), Notre Dame (this year's runner up), Michigan, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Denver U, Colorado College, Maine, etc. all have excellent hockey programs. why not BYU? we would pack the Marriott Center (after they put in the ice plant of course). Ice Hockey is an amazing sport with amazing action. the fighting at the college level is minimal due to the severe repercussions to teams but the hits are better than football and i am a huge college football fan too. as baseball interest wanes, it's time to move onto new ground, or at least a slap of thick ice. with so many LDS canadien hockey athletes waiting for a chance for an education not to mention the USA kids, it's worth giving them a shot for a change instead of just the traditional football, basketball and baseball.
They Beat Utah When? | 7:46 a.m. May 22, 2008
BYU did not beat Utah when it counted -- that is in the opening round of the Mountain West tournament.

Enjoy your Duel trophy. Cougars were on the plane home from Dallas and Utah's still playing.

Oh by the way, better send that trophy to Cedar City because SUU embarrassed your beloved Cougars not once, but twice.

Always a next year. So sums up the BYU sports year of 2007-2008. What one hopes for is that the players found something important for themselves. May be next year BYU will return to better form. At least, I hope that it is more than football next year.

it's sad when zoobs get their self esteems when a losing baseball team gets one lucky win.
Scott | 8:30 a.m. May 22, 2008
I think part of the problem is the Coach. I think that Law should be let go and bring somebody else in.
Brad | 8:35 a.m. May 22, 2008
So sums up the BYU sports year of 2007-2008? Son, you are way off.
Love the Birds! | 9:07 a.m. May 22, 2008
Gotta love the sweep of the Y this year by SUU. Coach Elldredge is building a nice program in Cedar. Go Thunderbirds!
PG Coug | 9:22 a.m. May 22, 2008
Who cares if the Yewts are still playing. You are just jealous about that fine 5 dollar piece of plastic we got in winning the D. Duel. The trophy is ugly, both baseball teams are ugly (whether you are still playing or not) but the best thing is: We still beat you in the duel! Any time we get a worthless trophy and you don't that's all that matters. I despise the U! Go Cougars, even if you sit on your butts and the Yewts play on!
Jim | 9:38 a.m. May 22, 2008
Isn't the reason BYU doesn't have a hockey team just because of teh NCAA title 9 rules? I think they can't afford any more men's scholarships. That's why they got rid of men's wrestling and gymnastics, isn't it? Just curious. Nice thought though from the post about turning the MC into a hockey rink.
UV Win | 10:24 a.m. May 22, 2008
Harmon acts like BYU losing to UV is a big upset. Not so fast my friend! UV beat them again later in the year and took the season series 2-1. I heard they also got some in state recruits this year that BYU was after too.

Word on the street is Law may be done.
Have Bronco coach | 11:50 a.m. May 22, 2008
the baseball team then the program will turn into gold.
local talent | 12:38 p.m. May 22, 2008
UV and SUU beat BYU with mostly local talent, maybe should look in their own back yard. Some really good players in Utah and Salt Lake County that are still undecided.
Cold weather no excuse | 12:45 p.m. May 22, 2008
BYU has a new "gigantic" indoor facility right? The baseball team can hold complete practices in the facility all winter. So what's the problem? Most kids out of high school opt for a college scholarship instead of a minor league A or AA contract which pays about $20000 a year. The life blood of any college athletic program is recruiting and apparently Vance Law can't seem to make much of a case for anyone of any quality to come play in Provo. When you are getting thumped by SUU not once but twice - you know you have a BIG problem. BYU had the worst college team in the state this year including Dixie and SLCC (yes including Jr College). If Bronco lost to teams like North Texas State and Eastern Washington, how long would he be the head coach of BYU football? Maybe 2 years. Vance Law has embarrassed the school as well as the program.
BYU grad | 1:43 p.m. May 22, 2008
What? BYU lost to Utah Valley and swept by S UT? The program deserves the death penalty and focus only in the two sports that matter: basketball and football.
Baseball Fan | 3:41 p.m. May 22, 2008
I am not sure where the program is headed. I think that Vance is a great person and I am sure that BYU loved his major league pedigree. The questions that have always baffled me are these: how does someone whose High School coaching record like his get a Div. 1 job? How do you take someone serious when they bring in their sons to play, who were not above average ball players? The idea that Vance's background and experience would help in recruiting has not paid dividends, in fact I am almost positive that his assistants do most of the recruiting. I hope that BYU stumbles onto another great coach like Bronco or Rose.
Give me a break! | 4:55 p.m. May 22, 2008
Coach Law is a great coach. How can the faithful and loyal fans turn against him so quickly? It is one season. Wasn't it just a couple of seasons ago when he had BYU on top of the world with their amazing wins and seasons? Teams go through ups and downs....this is normal. The test for Coach Law will be how he and the team does next season. Can they recoup from such a poor year? I say YES.
Jeremy in Texas | 4:56 p.m. May 22, 2008
I think the main problem with the team other than ill fitting parts was extremely poor defense. The pitching wasn't great this year but it was not as bad as the numbers would indicate. The defense blew tons of plays that did not get scored as errors which skews the numbers. That being said they have some talented hitters but sometimes the quality of the individual players don't equate to team success. See the Detroit Tigers. BYU was a bad team this year. I was at the conference tournament and witnessed a lack of intensity and fundamentals. From not making routine ground ball plays to the RF flat out dropping a fly ball and players not covering bases it was a terrible display of baseball. I think the coaching staff has to take some accountability for it.
Local Baseball Fan | 5:20 p.m. May 22, 2008
Law needs to go. He can't recruit anyone unless they're from Provo High where his kids went. He starts his son when his son couldn't make any other team in the state. Just because he was successful in the Majors doesn't mean he can coach. But, he's a great PR move for the AD and the administration. Coaching is a hobby for him, not a passion. Let's get rid of him and get a real coach.
AZ Dave | 5:28 p.m. May 22, 2008
Time to make a change. Law only got the job because of his last name. I hear Bobby Noel is rested and ready to go.
Time to stand up and fight | 7:11 p.m. May 22, 2008
Next year it will be interesting to see what Vance Law is made of. I personally think Law has a good baseball mind and has done a decent job---not a great job but ok given the circumstances. Will he stand and be counted? Is he a winner or will he find some lame excuse to quit. He sure doesn't need the money and I think it's fair to question how much passion he has for the job.

Interesting how coaches (remember Roger Reid) seem to struggle with recruiting once their sons come on board. Vernon Law is one of the finest people you'll ever meet, and was truly a great baseball player. Vance took excellent advantage of his name and carved out a solid major league career, but again, next year, we'll all find out next year if Vance Law has heart, or just a guy filling in until someone better comes along.
nepotism at its best | 8:23 p.m. May 22, 2008
How many seasons does BYU have to endure a Law batting .250

stop playing your sons who don't deserve to be D1 ball players and maybe you'll win a few more games.
Y Dad, Y Grad | 9:18 p.m. May 22, 2008
I hate to admit it, but the correct interpretation is "BYU humiliated the U during the season to take the trophy, but the U won the game that mattered. Then went on to choke."

Tough season, clock is ticking. Hard to win with no Senior leadership. Harder still when one of your stars gets smoked for missing church. But the hardest thing is over-coming and finding a way to make it happen.
prc | 10:17 p.m. May 22, 2008
Once again Dick, you sound like a BYU homer. The weather isn't really a factor, its a cop out. When Oregon State was here eariler in the year their parents said that they too have to battle severe weather every year. And if I remember right they were the National Champs the last two years! The problem is the poor schlorships that BYU offers. Two local kids went to oregon state this year and received full rides. One of the best pitchers in the state signed with BYU for next year and received only a 25% schlorship. No wonder BYU Recuits are bolting for the big money ($20,000) of professional "A" baseball. I know that title 9 has made a mess of college sports but that is a cop out too. The problem isn't the weather, local talent, or any thing else but BYU elitest attitude. If a kid is LDS and a good ball player BYU puts pressure on the kid to sign for a palty schlorship because he is a Mormon and should play for BYU just for that fact alone and should settle for a crap schlorship. That's why players aren't going to the Y>
Cougar Fan | 11:36 p.m. May 22, 2008
I'm not joining the "Bash Law Bandwagon" just yet or anytime soon. He has great baseball knowledge. He's a gentleman. He's professional and he has proven that he can win in this league. He is a good coach but he has had a couple of down years. I agree that BYU needs to offer a few more from their own backyard but Vance has worked hard on recgnizing local talent unlike the guy he replaced. However, one very good player he missed on was UVU pitcher/third baseman Jace Brinkerhoff. That kid can play exceptionally well. I know Parker is the third bagger but Brinkerhoff is versatile. He can play third, first, outfield and pitch. Andrew Law is a good enough fielder and base runner to play D-1 but he should've went to a JC before BYU. It would've helped his offensive game where he struggled this year. BYU needs to snag a JC second bagger to come in and compete immediately if neither Law or Relf improves dramatically. BYU will improve a lot on this year. Don't give up on Law. He is a good coach and he has some great assistants.
Jimmy | 6:31 a.m. May 23, 2008
They play baseball in college?
To Gretzky | 9:50 a.m. May 23, 2008
As baseball interest wanes? What are you talking about? MLB has been setting attendance records. If either sport is waning, it's hockey.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see hockey at the Marriot Center. But given the restrictions of Title IX, I'm not holding my breath.
Re: Ernest T. Bass | 10:38 a.m. May 23, 2008
ewe fans evidently have real interest in BYU sports. I agree Ernie, BYU has the sports teams to watch and make comments on. Go Cougars!
Cougar | 11:16 a.m. May 23, 2008
Anyone who claims that the MWC is not effecting BYU baseball is kidding themselves. 3 of last year's best recruits left the state for the PAC 10 (Jones, Nash and Robles). Until BYU and Utah find a conference a lot tougher than the Mountain West, it will be very difficult for them to be on the national spotlight in the main sports (basketball, baseball, football). Just savor the national prowess of men's volleyball and woman's gymnastics.
Scott??? | 3:08 p.m. May 23, 2008
Any grounds for your argument?
Why all the coach Law bashing? Great Man Great Coach. Let the players take some accountability too!
Scholarships are a problem but not just for BYU. Schools offer full rides just to get the kids there and then they will be reduced the following year. That's how they keep getting the best new talent. The NCAAA has the same regulations for every school. BYU, in order to show loyalty to their players spreads out the scholarships to their players. Can't fault them for that, I don't think. And since when did the size of your scholarship matter anyways? Couldn't a player from a wealthy family come in and say they don't need the scholarship, save it for another talented kid and help the team get another good player???? Many of the talented local players don't have the grades or the lifestyle to go to BYU. Cant blame the BYU coaches for the choices of the local players.
It's amazing to see how people turn so quickly when ONE year goes bad. It will be interesting to see how the cougars bounce back for next year. I am sure they will! GO COUGS!!!!
Nepotism..... | 3:16 p.m. May 23, 2008
Anyone else on the team that stepped in and did better?
alternate | 3:33 p.m. May 23, 2008
if you watched the infamous 8th inning at Franklin Covey, there were a lot of downhearted Ute fans moping around. Perk up! The Utes are having a great tournament. This is their best showing in how many years? Maybe ever. My only gripe is with the Black hats. Good luck to Utah, good luck to BYU. Role reversals sometimes are good for both schools.
Recruit Utah instead of Hawaii | 9:35 p.m. May 23, 2008
Maybe BYU should try recruiting a little more local talent. Why didn't they even attempt to get any of the D-1 talent that left the state last year. I know of one who is starting at third base for Stanford, one who is starting for Oregon State, and one who has been a starter on the mound at Arkansas, and none of them even got a sniff from BYU. Maybe Law should at least TRY to keep the local talent around.
Recruit Utah instead of Hawaii | 10:19 p.m. May 23, 2008
BYU does recruit in state. As a matter of fact, I saw Coach Law at the state games today looking for talent. Robbles didn't want to go to BYU and couldn't get into school anyways. Nash blew off BYU and thought he was above them and signing for less than 1 million dollars and went to OSU. Zac Jones was too good as well and chose Stanford, can't blame him on that one. Mahler at Ark also elected not to go to BYU and chose Ark for conference reasons and it was a better fit for him. Before you go on saying that BYU doesn't recruit in state get your facts figured out. There's a lot that goes on that you obviously don't know about.
Anonymous | 11:45 p.m. May 23, 2008
rumor has it that Vance's youngest son, Adam, will be a cougar on the baseball team as well.....
nepotism... | 1:42 a.m. May 24, 2008
No Law ever hit .250, maybe not where you would like averages to be but then again unless you played, how would you know what it's like from the stands?
Funny Thing | 1:35 p.m. May 24, 2008
BYU moves Walton and McNaughton, both All-MWC second basemen, to the outfield so that Law could play his kid at second for much of the year. Law's got to go.
Old Cougar | 3:05 p.m. May 24, 2008
I respect all "takes" on the BYU Baseball Program. It shows people are interested. All arguments have some validity. The only way to fix the problem is to win. If BYU had won this year, all problems would be forgiven and forgotten.
Funny Thing... | 8:13 p.m. May 24, 2008
Fielding percentage might have something to do with it! Get your stuff straight before you pop off. You don't get chosen to be All-MWC just because of your defense or your position. Offense is way more important. Relf and Law split time at second with Relf starting almost twice as much. Once again, get your stuff straight before you pop off.
More Laws | 9:48 a.m. May 25, 2008
The Y needs a Law at every position. Any pitchers coming up? I'm sure potential recruits are excited to play on a team where they get to back up the coaches kid.

Oh....btw Funny Thing..... the point is that Law shouldn't have been starting at all. Look at Relf's stats, MWC games win championships, they are much better than Law's. There really isn't a lot to argue about. A coach that demonstrates nepotism on multiple occasions (look back over his coaching career, this isn't the first time) has his priorities in the wrong place. Life isn't fair but it is worth pointing out when a D-1 team looks like it is playing little league politics.

Better luck next year.
Anonymous | 10:26 a.m. May 25, 2008
Rumor about Adam...no way that can happen and Vance keep his job.
Vance already has Murphy, Nielsen. I guess name and money does it, or does it?
Not a Rumor | 11:04 a.m. May 25, 2008
Adam Law has said he is committed to BYU and has been quoted as saying he will get his 2nd half of school paid for!(first half paid cuz the old man is and employee) He wasn't the best shortstop in Region 7 of 4A!

If Andrew hit .250 it was because he was 1-4 in the first game of the year, went to several games and watched some on the mtn. and he never was above about .225 that I saw listed.

Then there's Tim, hey, everybody needs and 5'7" first baseman that can't swing it a lick! Vance is a nice enough guy, but as someone said above, he's coaches as a hobby. Also, the BYU elitist thing is right on target!
Re: More Laws | 12:52 p.m. May 25, 2008
Then who DH's? Look at the fielding numbers as well and the team as a whole. Law only started half the games as Relf, fielded better and .341 is nothing to shake your head at either.
Re: Not a Rumor | 12:55 p.m. May 25, 2008
Check your stats again before you throw in your bits. You ought to go play since you seem to be so much better than what BYU has. BYU has try-outs along with every other school.
Re: More Laws | 2:21 p.m. May 25, 2008
Who DH's? Give me a break. On BYU's roster, during any given year, it isn't difficult to find a kid who can hit. They will likely have some RBI's and a slugging percentage (including HR's) to go with it (more than just one extra bagger). BYU has never had a problem finding guys who can crush the ball.

Hold on! This just in.....the team batting leader in conference games (Relf) had to share time?! He also has a top notch fielding percentage.

It's safe to say that if Relf hadn't led the team he wouldn't have played at all.

Any true BYU fan would prefer the best players play. Consistently playing your sub average kids isn't in the best interest of a true BYU fan.

Your argument is really helping to clear things up.
Don't replace Law | 2:29 p.m. May 25, 2008
To replace Coach Law would be a huge mistake! It is only logical that he would be replaced by one of his sons and that would be a disaster.
Marty Jorgensen | 5:18 p.m. May 25, 2008
BYU Coug Fans should be totally ashamed at the way the assistant coaches have prepped the team. Vance Law is a super individual and may know the Pro game but this is not a pro game. the teams in Omaha have Coaches call the pitches.as they have more time to know the opposing teams. and yes his assistants should be fired for not preparing the the team. From Pitching, base running, and fielding, this has got to be one of the worst BYU teams ever. he has lost more of the real good LDS return missionary players. they fire coaches, not players for this years performance. Vance trusted you guys to do your job and nope it didn't happen. Roberts and Applegate are wanna be's in coaching...Talk is cheap and you guys are out of excuses. Bring back the winning days...if SUU sweeps you and you passed on some of those guys that are worthy, than get out of the way and lets hold the baseball team to same standard as the other teams at BYU. So rise and shout, assistant coaches get out. Vance has one more year!
