Good job Brighton! YOU FINALLY DID IT! hopefully now the trash talking will stop from viewmont..
Who was that kid playing right wing? That kid was crazy quick and fast..

the best team won | 12:19 a.m. May 23, 2008
Having been at the game as an unbiased fan i honestly had to say that Brighton was the better team. They were stacked with subs and subs of good players. The only reason viewmont even ever had a shot at this game was because they have a beast for a forward who would basically run everyone over on his way toward the goal! Viewmonts fans were funny but kinda rude..
All in all it was a sick game that was won by the better of the two teams

I can't begin to tell you how proud I am of those guys. 04 was a painful loss in the shoot out to Weber, 06 was tough with the OT loss to Alta, but finally the Bengals get the hardware to go with all the hard work they put into their seasons of soccer. Adam has had an injury filled career and that goal couldn't have happened for a more deserving kid. Best of luck to him at Dixie College next year. As for coach Boyer, you are a gentalmen and a scholar and you and your lovely wife deserve this as much as anyone else. The boys bengal championship curse has been broken, and long with the Brighton Bengals. And Lone Peak fan, this is for you...BENGALS ARE STATE CHAMPES AGAIN! Amen

Way to go Brighton! If Alta couldn't win then I am glad you did. Interesting: a hand ball in the box by a Viewmont player. Sound familiar. This time I guess you didn't get away with it. I know there is a huge rivalry between Alta and Brighton, but I can honestly say as an Alta fan that Brighton had a very good team this year and I am glad they won.
boring | 3:18 a.m. May 23, 2008
Soccer is a boring sport that is uneventful and produces overly sensitive men. We need to focus on more noble games that build character and toughness, like Rugby and Football. Although I guess it's okay if you are into co-ed sports where the only possible injuries are hurt feelings and messy hair from the wind.
Re: soccer fan | 4:00 a.m. May 23, 2008
I watched all the tournament games and over all at the end of the year alta will be ranked about #6 at best, behind Bountiful, brighton, Viewmont, Davis and Mt View. Althought I don't think they have the mental toughness to beat springville either....whenever they get behind they seem to just whither! Congratulations to two great champions Bountiful and brighton.

brighton is white hot. ya boiiiiiii state champs

as an unbiased spectator and a high school player, i can honestly say that viewmont dominated that game. but in soccer the end score is the only thing that matters and congratulations to brighton for being so tough and getting the job done, especially to that defender, i think #7, he was fantastic. viewmont and brighton are both excellent soccer teams
Karma | 6:40 a.m. May 23, 2008
I love the karma behind it all. Way to go bengals, you deserved it.

Congratulations Coach Boyer. Glad to see we are back on track.

If soccer is a boring sport, then why are you reading an article about soccer?
Re: Boring | 7:08 a.m. May 23, 2008
Football builds character? 85 guys on a team - most of them get to play a total of 5 minutes a game - that really builds character.
brighton fan | 7:13 a.m. May 23, 2008
its a terrible way to get a win with a PK,or for viewmonts sake to lose on a PK, but hey that's they things go sometimes- go game on both sides, i was really impressed with viewmonts #13,#5, and especially their goal-keeper, keep your chin high viewmont- you played a game and had an excellent season
Anonymous | 7:51 a.m. May 23, 2008
we didn't win on a pk. it was a header that was going in but the viewmont player stopped it with his hand. Either way brighton would have scored.

Let’s be honest – you see more typical men playing football than soccer; big beer bellies and breathing hard because they had to run all the way to the side lines where they maintain oxygen for them. Displaying the typical male creativity and ingenuity they pay a staff of highly skilled specialist to study everything and then tell them what to do, then take a long break between actual works to talk it all over, and then screw up the execution of plan. Football is the American way and I’m glade of it, otherwise they would expect me to look like an athlete, and I look a lot more like an offensive guard.

the real football. (soccer) the sport you tackle with out pads

It was interesting to watch the news last night and see the clip of the hand ball called. It was obvious that is was a hand ball, but what people seemed to overlook is that Viewmont keeper, Josh Nordfelt, was mauled over by 2 Brighton players. Funny how no one saw that. Viewmont was the better team and Josh Nordfelt should be MVP!
Did you notice | 9:37 a.m. May 23, 2008
Funny how it seems no one saw that not all but most games (both 5A and 4A) were decided by one goal. A couple had a wider spread, and a couple (including one Brighton game) ended in a shoot out. I think there were many teams that could have taken state this year, but it is over and Brighton did. Soccer is on the rise in Utah, and there exist many great athletes on many good teams these days. I won’t mention any since then everyone would argue over who is really the best player or team. But I do want to say THANKS to all the players and coaches, and yes even the refs, who providing such an entertaining tournament as well as something for my son to do besides TV and video games.

CONGRATULATIONS BRIGHTON BENGALS!!! Stiff competition from all teams in Region II made you better. Bingham, Freemont, Weber, and Viewmont were fantastic competitors (especially the Freemont goalie!). Thanks to Captains Barton, Hanna, Nielsen, and Shortsleeve for the leadership they provided. Burnside was amazing at defense. Way to nail the PK Dahlberg. Patxi is art form in action as goalie. Brighton's players exhibited heart and tenacity throughout region play and in the state tournament. Credit goes to Brighton's fans, parents, and faculty for their unwaiverable support. Finally, kudos to the tres amigos--Coaches Boyer, Foerster, and Bullough. Well done.

I wonder how many seniors have scholarships lined up. There seems to be a growing crop a great players coming out of Utah these days. I hope that it continues to rise, and that the youth strives to reach the next level.
Great tournament, great teams, great players.

What a great season for Viewmont. We're not making any excuses, and congrats to Brighton. We controlled the game just like Alta conrolled us, but it wasn't meant to be. Region One did better than anyone expected in State soccer (and basketball) even though all year long we've been trashed by Region Two and Region Four fans about playing a bunch of sissy teams. Weber, Fremont, Davis and Layton represented Region One very well (just ask Riverton, Lone Peak, Lehi, and Timpanogas). I know that Brighton was hoping that someone would knock off Jordan and Alta so they wouldn't have to play them. Viewmont says "your welcome.....twice". We'll take our second place trophy.
viewmont | 9:48 a.m. May 23, 2008
so viewmont can be the next brighton, thats their 3rd loss in the final in the past 6 years, and two other times in the semi's, and haven't won a title since '95, so i think viewmont is well deserving. both teams played a great game, it could have gone either way, and you must admit viewmont was better than you brighton boys expected, you did only score off a pk... but great game guys.
Champs of what? | 9:53 a.m. May 23, 2008
It is interesting that many DesNews sports readers are passionately opposed to the BCS structure in college football because it rpevents a playoff to determine the real champion. Yet, no one seems to care that in every state in the USA, 4-5 teams are declared "state champs" in each sport, depending on how many classifications the state has established. So what if Brighton won the "state" championship? Did they play the 4A champ? 3A? 2A-1A? What does a "state championship" mean when the winners of each classification don't play each other to determine who is really the best team in the state? This is not to disparage Brighton's accomplishment, they won what was available for them to win. Yet as a sports fan it irks me that in no HS sports is an actual overall state champion crowned by winning against the champs of other classifications. The arguments used against such a real playoff are eerily similar to the ridiculous ones put forth by the BCS: impact on academics, too long of a season, etc. Let's face it, every state runs a mini BCS where the little guys (4Athru1A) don't get a shot at the 5A champ.

Hey boring try telling most of the known world soccer is boring. there are more people that watch the world cup final than watch the entire NFL season. The number one franchise in all of sport is Manchester United. Oh and as far as football building character, thats why guys like PAC Man Jones, Ray Lewis, OJ Simpson, Mike Vick, on and on have so much character.
RE:Champs of what | 10:23 a.m. May 23, 2008
I'm a 5A high school football coach we would love to have an overall state champ and have tried to do just that. It's your 3A,2A,1A buddies that will have no part of it and everytime we bring it up they claim
For a total champ | 10:26 a.m. May 23, 2008
I know in some states, like Kentucky, there are classifications for the regular season, but in the postseason, it is a winner-take all format. I would like to see this here in Utah so we can put to rest all the whining that comes from the 1-3A schools about how they think they can beat the Binghams, Altas, Brightons, and Timpviews of the state.
spanky | 10:33 a.m. May 23, 2008
Handball in the box. What poetic justice. Sometimes you get caugth and sometimes you don't. Although I would have liked to see Brigthon and Alta in the Championship Game as it should have been I am stoked the Bengals puller er off. We gave you every chance in the world Viewmont, homecourt, turf, wind in the second half of the semis, one-sided officiating in the semis, but you still could not capitilize on all these gifts. Talent always prevails over cheap luck. Viewmont shirt pullers and dirty players(look at the pictures in the photo gallery of the semifinal and finals) you finally got yours. Your goalie was not mugged(stop making excuses) he is just a big red whinner. Bring your A game next year and leave the tricks at home. Mourn On!
hey boring | 10:34 a.m. May 23, 2008
did anybody else notice what time that boring posted his comment??? 4 am... Looks like somebody needs to get a life. Your on the computer at 4 am looking at the news articles about soccer, when according to you its the most boring sport there is??? ha ha wow sounds kind of bad ass to me
Congrats! | 10:39 a.m. May 23, 2008
Congrats to both Brighton & Bountiful! Both are great teams, and both played great teams! I wouldn't say that any of the 4 teams dominated their opponent, as both 4A & 5A state games were great games to watch, both games ended 1-0. CLOSE! Mountain View almost scored on an open goal on Bountiful, but it hit the side post and rolled across the goal line. CLOSE ONE! Viewmont hit the cross bar several times as well as there were many saves by both Viewmont's and Brighton's keepers. GREAT JOB TO ALL!
Also, I witnessed some great sportsmanship on all teams, (and also some not so pleasant sportsmanship), on all teams. Mountain View had great fans that cheered the entire game, with positive cheers & chants. Bountiful ran over and applauded MV after the game for a great game. Great job!
Best of luck to all you seniors in your future! You played with heart!

brighton rocks. end of story. viewmont can go cry about the karma they deserved. STATE CHAMPS BENGALS!! WAY TO SHOW THE STATE HOW ITS DONE. Alta is awesome too but BRIGHTON STATE CHAMPS IS ALL YOU GOTTA REMEMBER!!!!!!!!
brighton fan | 10:55 a.m. May 23, 2008
great game on both sides of the pitch. great saves by keeper nordfelf and great saves by keeper shortsleeve. both sides plyed really well. #5 (viewmont) way to carry your team all the way to the finals, you came up short, but you and your team should be proud. im serious when i say that. great team viewmont and brighton
Football | 11:11 a.m. May 23, 2008
I played football for 23 years. It in no way compares with the action / training / contact that soccer has. As for rugby, I would say that game is a good comparison to soccer.
Try having a 17 year old run full speed at you and kick you in the face without a helmet.

The world's greatest footballer's well done!!! This is just the beginning i predict them winning state in the next two years with their junior and sophmore players. Maybe Three we will see
utah soccer | 11:47 a.m. May 23, 2008
as an unbiased spectator and parent of 4 high school soccer players. I can honestly say brighton controlled the game. they played with honor no cheap shots and control. viewmont on other hand (as the picture shows) had many cheap shots.I was shocked as a past ref that the center ref allowed some of the plays or players of viewmont to remain on the field. I kept hoping the brighton boys would become a little more physical but I am happy they played as gentlemen. It is hard to play against a 12 man team(yellowshirt). congrats brighton.
re: Curious | 12:01 p.m. May 23, 2008
Curious said at 9:40: ...wonder how many seniors have scholarships... The reality is that there ARE great players coming out of Utah club and H.S. soccer BUT very few get college scholarships because of the following reasons:
a. there are not that many men's soccer programs (Div. 1 and Div. 2 and NAIA offer soccer scholarships but most 1/2 programs have football that take the majority of men's scholarship money)
b. the number of full scholarships available to men is usually less than 10 per team and is most often divided up among many player. Few players get full rides which makes going out-of-state still very expensive.
c. many boys in Utah go on church missions which is not a plus for many college men's soccer programs.
d. it is very difficult for players in Utah to be seen by college recruiters; it requires advancing out of bracket play in expensive out of state tournaments.
Great stuff everyone in the high school soccer season. Seniors, best of luck in the future.

good season | 12:17 p.m. May 23, 2008
what an unbelievable season it was. There were soo many different teams that had a shot to win it. I wish it would've been another alta brighton finish but oh well i guess thats just the way the cookie crumbles.. Viewmont was better than i thought they would be so good season Viewmont you played well
cool kid | 12:29 p.m. May 23, 2008
boy, viewmont just can't keep their hands off that ball! it's a good thing a ref is compitent enough to call hand balls, unlike the alta viewmont game. This year the final should have been brighton v. Alta, they are the best teams in the state. The viewmont coach even said after the game that the best team didn't win vs alta. I guess pukemont's luck can't withstand an entire tournament. I would have rather watched the typical alta brighton rivalry for a final than boring viewmont!

Re: Re:Curious The reality is that 90% of all NCAA/NAIA scholarships are offered on inter-regional club play, not high school play. This is true for women and men. And the Freshman class of next year was signed, sealed and delivered long before this spring season started. But you are right, soccer is not a strong college men's sport in terms of institutional financial support. Much more support, for example, goes to women's soccer programs at those schools that have men's football programs, as they seek to create equity under Title IX.
The "women" of Utah have been discovered. More than 50 college scholarships were received in this year's Senior class. Including placements at top programs in all NCAA divisions.

As a father of a state contender I wish to thank all those who participated in soccer this year. It was fun watching all the boys grow up over the years and improve their skills on and off the field. Thank you to the officials and administrators, and coaches. I'm proud of you all.
next season | 12:42 p.m. May 23, 2008
I predict next year Brighton will win it again.. Then the next two year after that i am picking alta, with a couple starting freshman and some amazing underclassmen.. it will be a rebuilding year next year for alta though.
Good season brighton.. thats 4 straight years with the 5a title in region 2!

Brighton | 1:17 p.m. May 23, 2008
Thanks for taking the game into your own hands. Great defense. Way to play both halfs. This is why you are the State Champs of 5A. A lesson to semi-finalist losers don't quit when your up at the half, be prepared for inclement weather, wind, heat , don't let poor calls take you out of your game, take the game into your own hands and respect your opponents. Good work from keeping Vikings for defeating three straight Region 2 Teams. Jordan and Alta great teams but not the lakers of soccer this year.
question | 1:31 p.m. May 23, 2008
does anyone know when the ALL-STATE players will be posted- i know it takes a while .. but how long?
Davis Player | 1:48 p.m. May 23, 2008
I just want to say that i was at the game and that #7 from brighton is the best center back in the state probably, he didn't let viewmonts forwards do anything at all. That kid was SICK!!!! Congrats Brighton.
Anonymous | 2:41 p.m. May 23, 2008
Brighton, Jordan, Alta and Viewmont were ranked 1 thru 4 going into state. Now that it's over, the head-to-head records between those teams were: Brighton 3-2, Jordan 2-3, Alta 2-3 and Viewmont 2-1 so even though VHS had the best winning percentage Brighton beat them in the final so the Bengals deserve #1. Viewmont clearly deserves the #2 spot because even Brighton would've had a hard time beating three top teams back-to-back-to-back like VHS tried to do.

I am one of the referee's that officated in the 5A Playoffs. I know we miss calls and make wrong calls and it does determine the outcome of the game. I am not going to apoligize for being human. Sorry Alta that's the way the ball bounces, no pun intended.
Pound for Pound | 3:13 p.m. May 23, 2008
Studentbody: Viewmont - 1633, Jordan - 1837, Brighton - 1923, and Alta - 2537. Seems to me that pound for pound Viewmont is the best. Geez, with a studentbody of 2537 Alta should be winning it every year. Wait 'til 2010 when Herriman High opens up and we see the last of the mega High Schools like Alta, Bingham, and Riverton.
re: pound for | 3:32 p.m. May 23, 2008
alta is weak in sports programs for being by far the biggest school (2537) in the state. They must be one of those schools that focuses more on academics and don't care much about athletics, which is admirable. I sure can't figure out how they got to the judges for the all-tourney team, they didn't deserve 4 players. They weren't even good enough to get into the final game!
Braves 8th | 3:58 p.m. May 23, 2008
Bountiful has 8 state soccer championships, WX has 6, brighton is next with 5, and Viewmont has 3. Bountiful City is truely the soccer capital of Utah!
