If you're afraid of what EnergySolutions stores at its Utah facility, then don't ever go get an x-ray or MRI, and for goodness sake, get those smoke alarms out of your house. Those items are more dangerous than anything ES has at its disposal site. Thanks to fear-mongerers like Jim Matheson and HEAL, Utahns are scared to death of things that are perfectly safe in the doses they are exposed to. Get over it. Grow up.

So how long have you worked for the Energy Solutions company. This is a state that felt the effects of radiation beyond any other. How dare you say "Get over it.Grow up" Tell that to the Downwinders that now have cancer. So now you want Utah to take the Radiation waste from Italy. If it's so safe send it to New York it's closer!.

if it's so safe, why would Italy pay so much to get rid of it?

Smoke detectors are "more dangerous than anything EnergySolutions has at its disposal site"? Are you even serious, Jeff? This is exactly the reason why no one believes what EnergySolutions and their lackeys say.

According to the EPA, a smoke detector contains 1 millionth of a curie of radiation. By comparison, one of EnergySolution's permit conditions allows it to receive "containerized A" waste that has 100 curies of radiation. Other conditions allow it to possess upto 20,000 curies at any given time. That's 100 million to 20 billion times more radioactivity than is found in a smoke detector.

Furthermore, anyone can handle a smoke detector, but some of the wastes EnergySolutions receives have to be remotely handled by cranes because workers would receive a lethal dose if they inspected the container.

I, for one, am thankful that people like Matheson and Huntsman are speaking out on the issue. Lord knows what would happen to our state if people like Jeff and Steve Creamer had their way.

Please, no more nuclear waste in Utah. We have enough of our own!
My family are downwinders.
Let the Italians take responsibility for their own nuclear waste. There are relatively safe ways of handling it and I am not an anti-nuclear activist, but this stuff IS dangerous.
Not only am I a downwinder, but we lived in the shadow of Three Mile Island when they vented during the clean-up after the "accident" (sabotage). Excess exposure to radiation causes many problems and we have all we need without importing more.
Global warming NIMBYs | 1:34 p.m. June 11, 2008
Despite all the angst over global warming, fear mongering and ignorace can't catch up. The NIMBYs are out in force to prevent Utah from being part of the solution to the world's excess emission of greenhouse gases.

There is a way to likely kill someone with the radioactive bit in a smoke detector, ............but I won't tell you.

A few rail carloads of waste a year carry a tiny share of the radioactivity that is present in fly ash from coal fied plants.

There will be thousands of rail shipments each year that will be much more dangerous than the Energy Solutions rail cars. Remember the leaking tankers of waste acids in the middle of the valley a few years back?

You NIMBYs display midieval mentalities. The world is a dangeous place, now more than ever.. It needs bright, educated, and rational environmental stewards, not shallow, irrational, reactionary, fear mongers.

Grow up, get real, and contribute!

NRC will consider but ultimately dismiss commnets that do not address the safety, technical and legal issues. Opponents that have flooded the comment box like baseball fans in All-Star balloting will have their rote, ochestrated and contrived comments dismissed as they should be if they do not address those issues.

If you don't want foreign waste then stop taking it from any other of state in the US. Do you hear any of your band wagon jumping pols or regulators advocating that? Where were your legislators and regulators when taxes were proposed on then Envirocare?

Career activist prey on the under-educated much like WW II era political opportunists preyed on the populations of Italy and Germany. Its irrational, emotional and not based on facts. Fear is a very powerful emotion and easy to invoke. Don't be fooled.
