I have spent two years in Egypt and I never stop marveling at the great things to see there. everyone should see it sometime so they too can feel the history.

"ooze with inscriptions"? I wasn't aware that writing could ooze.

I found Egypt quite enjoyable, except for the Egyptians. The vendors are quite pushy, to the point a few nearly got thrown from some cliffs near the Valley of the Kings. Still, it is quite worthwhile. I cruised the Nile from Luxor down to Aswan, as well as went down to Abu Simbel. Quite worthwhile. Scuba in the Red Sea is similar to the South Pacific, albeit it is like a colder version. Anyway, I can see I need to go back. Everything North of Luxor is waiting for me...

Paul, you sound "quite" the ugly American.
"I found Egypt quite enjoyable, except for the Egyptians."
Please.

I lived in Cairo last summer and the best part of Egypt was the Sinai. The Sinai, but NOT Sharm El Sheik. That place is a disgrace to the rest of Egypt. Plastic camels. Men in Saudi dress because that's the way Europeans and Americans think "Arabs" look. Taba was heaven. You can see the shores of Saudi Arabia, Israel and Jordan from the beach. The first day I was there, the sun was setting over Egypt's moutains and the full moon was coming up over Saudi Arabia.

Not so pompous. Some of the Egyptians are quite nice. Others seem to live only to figure out how to squeeze a few bucks from the foreigners. The word 'no' isn't in their vocabulary. Kids are used to coerce a few bucks out you through guilt or guile. Yes, a lot of them live in squallor and are quite poor. But, they are dignified in doing so. That part of Egypt is great to visit. The vendors - not so sure anyone would care if they all disappeared.

To Brother Jones- RE: inscriptions oozing from monuments... it's a little poetic, like a person who "oozes confidence." I'm a writer and a traveler and I very much enjoyed the article. Well written and informative. :)

I have been to Egypt three times and found the people to be some of the nicest and most accommodating in all of the Middle East. One highlight was a late-night boat ride down the Nile. And there are no words to describe the magnificence of the pyramids in Giza.

I also enjoyed the article. We are presently living in Mumbai, India and getting transferred later this year to Cairo, and are really looking forward to it. I understand how Paul could have made the statement "except for the Egyptians" because of having lived in several third world countries. Some of those who go to these countries have great experiences, but others have different experiences that maybe aren't so pleasant. Many come to India and aren't use to pushy people and beggars and trying to be cheated at ever turn, so they have a hard time dealing with it. It doesn't make anyone an "Ugly American". I HATE that term. I have traveled around the world and have seen so many "ugly" people traveling from so many different countries, that it is ignorant to point the finger at one nationality. I am looking forward to the new adventures that lie ahead in Cairo!
