Boy did we luck out when the republicans accidently elected a governor who gets it. Governor Huntsman's actions on the environment, education, and now liquor by the drink demonstrate that competence transcends party lines.

Sometimes even politicians can figure out that the status quo is childish and stupid.

"Anyway, we'll see if Utah changes one of its most misunderstood laws."
Misunderstood???? It is not, has never or will never been good public policy. It accomplishes nothing but make supporters feel superior.

I guess some folks feel that if you make others jump through enough hoops or make things as inconvienient as possible that will keep them from drinking.

I would still like to see a change in the law to allow private clubs--i.e., private adults gathering in a privately-owned space to the exclusion of minors and the general public--to allow smoking. If the legislature will not make this change, maybe the courts will.
On a separate note, every "real" bar I've ever been in has had a "right to refuse service" sign, so I'm not sure why private clubs would lose any particular right to exclude undesirables just by becoming a "bar." I suppose a high membership fee might keep the riff-raff out, but so would a cover charge.

"Liquor by the drink" is a phrase that is not used by anybody but the supporters of the status quo in this debate. This is just a term that people can easily come out against without having to admit to what they really want to do, and that is, to make it more difficult for people to engage in an activity that the majority believes is immoral. Instead of opposing "Liquor by the drink" just come out and say you favor "Morality imposed by law".
