Utah has a soccer team?
denz | 7:11 a.m. July 9, 2008
I love how the haters come out any time Real is mentioned. I really wish they would stick to their trailer park football.
RSL has improved their team on the field, now tied for 3rd place in their conference, has had good crowds all season long averaging over 15,000 for home matches, are set to play a match against the Mexican league champions tonight, have done a good job dealing with the prep to move to their new stadium, and now will be announcing getting the All Star game next season.
Still the bitter few who don't get soccer, and those who are upset that tourists will pay a slightly larger tax bill for a few additional years, bitch, moan, and complain. So sad that they can't get real lives.

But I thought no one cares and everyone hates soccer! Keep going soccer haters you only make it more popular.
Bring in MAN U......

Oh, john -- How can one man be so funny? Once again showing that Balaam's wasn't the only one who could speak.

This will be a great event to look forward to next summer. I hope I can get tickets. Congrats Real Salt Lake!
I like soccer (futbol) | 7:47 a.m. July 9, 2008
Dave Checketts?, not so much.
Utefan | 7:54 a.m. July 9, 2008
Soccer has all stars? Certainly no one from RSL will be on it. I bet it is as competitive as the NBA All star game.
Carlos | 8:07 a.m. July 9, 2008
Here's hoping they bring in a high caliber team. Let's skip the West Ham's, the Hotspurs, and bring in Milan, Madrid, Manchester or some other top tier club.
Wow... | 8:11 a.m. July 9, 2008
...So pumped, I wonder which SuperClub they will bring in for this game. Imagine if Chelski, Liverpool, or Arsenal were in Salt Lake next year.....I'm there!
I smell an early sellout!

RSL Allstars? | 8:12 a.m. July 9, 2008
I'm willing to bet we will have 2 players playing in next years all star game. Morales, and a new mystery player that scores alot of goals.
Robert | 8:48 a.m. July 9, 2008
This is no big deal. The soccer league has decided to play its "all star game" in the newest stadium to be built by a league team. It's a new league, doesn't have much to show for itself, and so when a relatively new team finishes a new stadium, it chooses that stadium to play a match. To generate publicity, the team's management makes a big deal out of it. Now all the soccer "fans" in the area are talking about Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea, as if FIFA will now play all its future matches in Sandy, Utah.
Despite the hype, RSL is still the team with the record for scoreless ties, clownish management, and poor players.

RE: Robert
This is Utah! Of course it is a big deal. Realize that we need to compete against bigger cities like New York, LA, Dallas, and Chicago. The league could have easily steared another all star game into one of those cities or even Seattle. After all, the real RSL fans deserve it, not a hater like you. What's a matter cant wait until hoops season so you have to bash soccer?

What? Robert, did someone take away your birthday? You Sound really lame. In any event, the All Star game will bring a top quality team to SLC. A team that a lot of soccer fans would love to see. It is great to see that a new stadium can provide a venue for these types of games for SLC. Another bonus for RSL!

When does Real football start?
Anonymous | 9:37 a.m. July 9, 2008
Robert's right;) No one in basketball or baseball would run around awarding all star games to cities with few stadiums!
If you've got a moment, analyze this statement: "To generate publicity, the team's management makes a big deal out of it."
Truer words were never spoken .

Re: Robert | 9:40 a.m. July 9, 2008
apparently you don't get it.. Give it time buddy, I will save you a seat at the new stadium, just catch the bandwagon on down and we will see you there!
re: BYU fan | 9:44 a.m. July 9, 2008
ReAL futbol has started! I kind of had to laugh that your name is BYU fan and you want to see "real football" oh man that was funny!
Get a Real Life! | 10:11 a.m. July 9, 2008
Thanks NEGATIVE Utahns, GO REAL!
Beer Me! | 10:18 a.m. July 9, 2008
Hopefully they'll bring in Real Madrid for an exhibition match.
Make a big deal out of it? | 10:21 a.m. July 9, 2008
Management doesn't have to do anything to make this a "big deal". I'm a soccer fan...and I'm calling it a big deal. Whenever a top club from around the world comes to a little undeserving town in Utah....it is a HUGE Deal.
Count me in.
Count me in.

Yes! The shin kickers are coming to Utah! I hope the local hospitals are stocked up on stretchers.
Re: BYU fan | 10:40 a.m. July 9, 2008
Your one line is getting a little old.
You've posted the exact same "when does real football start?" thing three times in a row. If you want to talk smack that's fine, but you need to get some new material.

Bring in Milan Please!!! | 10:52 a.m. July 9, 2008
I vote for Milan! Why all the bitterness? I guess some people (cough - robert - cough - utefan) just lead miserable lives and have nothing better to do.
Landon | 11:14 a.m. July 9, 2008
That is cool that we will host the soccer game, but to bad RSL wont have anyone on the All-Star team because NO ONE can score a goal for RSL, I think All-Stars can put the ball in the net! Besides the goalie for RSL who keeps them in the game week in and week out, the rest of the team is WEAK! I have been to about five games this year and three of them they decided to try and NOT score a goal! They are fun to go to and get out of the house, but wow, the frontline for RSL is HORRIBLE!
Jazz Fan | 11:25 a.m. July 9, 2008
Good news for Utah sports, I dont see why any one could be upset about this. All you people that call yourselves "sports fans" should stop your childish bashing of soccer.

I would rather watch they Yewts than Real Salt Lake.

I'm really excited for the game. I'm hoping for ManU or Chelsea (especially if they get Ronaldinho). Otherwise, let's bring in Milan or Barca.
The stadium is looking awesome as well. Let's hope the team keeps playing well so we can cheer them on in the new stadium. Go RSL!

Front Row | 11:58 a.m. July 9, 2008
All I can say is "Front Row Baby!" I can't wait to see the MLS All Stars play a top quality team. I hope it is LiverFool so we can smack them around!
BYU Fan or Utefan | 12:09 p.m. July 9, 2008
Seems like they're the same person. Giving a bad rep to fans of both sides and making fools of themselves on these posts. If they had a valid point or interesting thing to say...oh wait they've proved they do not, even after countless opportunities.

I'm a huge soccer fan. I play every week. I love watching MAN U and Chelsea, I think it's astounding how good those players are. MLS teams! Not so good! MLS has a long way before we can really claim that we play pretty soccer. And I don't think the MLS will ever bring to the table what Italy, Spain and England can bring. I think it's wishful thinking that the MLS will get bigger and better. What you see is what you get. I'm glad we have a soccer team. But I'm also so glad we have college football coming up cause now that the Euro cup is over, there's nothing good on t.v.

Ka-Ching!
Don't forget the out-of-county and out-of-state revenue this brings to SL County and Utah.
Too bad there isn't a good way to keep track of all the money that comes into Utah in relation to RSL so that all the opponents of the stadium could see how silly their arguments against providing public funding are/were.

..Since they are going to Shake up the Big 4 next season anyway...might as well bring in the up-and-comers. Bring it on Jo...see if you can't dazzle your way past our MLS'ers.
Or Valencia...I would love to see David Villa in the Bucket.

scoreless tie | 1:29 p.m. July 9, 2008
What happens if the all star game score is zero-zero? I guess then it will have been a great game.
Runnerboy3118 | 1:40 p.m. July 9, 2008
This will be fun, I can't wait. Don't worry about goals, because they are going to start coming in big number for our boys on the pitch. We'll end the season 1st in the west, with at least a +12 goal difference.
Anonymous | 1:41 p.m. July 9, 2008
Nice, that will be cool. Hopefully we can see Liverpool or Manchester United here in SLC.

Cougar Fan, you are not a true Cougar fan if you would rather watch the yewts than anything else. I'd rather watch paint dry on growing grass than watch anything that has to do with the yew.
I'll be there for the All-Star game, front row, south end, same as every RSL game in the new stadium!

So, I will now only support RSL!

I didn't know the MLS had all stars. Does the MLS have any team nearby?
Roger | 2:40 p.m. July 9, 2008
Most posters on this blog -- the "fans" -- are straining to get themselves worked up about the local team. They watch soccer matches on TV between real teams with real players and imagine themselves as part of that, and fool themselves into thinking that buying a ticket to watch RSL's third-rate players kick each other in the shins on their way to scoreless finishes is just like the real thing. Meanwhile, David Checketts is doing all he can to make money on this tendency for Utah "soccer fans" to fool themselves. I admit it may happen at some point in the future -- the very distant future --, but when that time comes the fans won't need to fool themselves, and people like David Checketts won't have to hype them up. There will be no need for it. Honest people will manage and own the team, players will speak English (without accents), and real fans will troop to the stadium just as naturally as baseball fans go to Franklin Covey Field. That time is not here, and no amount of hype or self-deception will make it so.

Have you seen the plane flying around the valley every time there's a baseball game on. That's not hype at all, is it. Or the 20 tickets for 2 dollars deal. Or the come get wasted on Thursday deal. Or the please come and watch, pretty pretty please deal. I actually think about going to a baseball game (which my taxes paid for) with the other 50 people, but then I realize I could get a better sleep if I stay home. I don't care how many times you score, when only 1 person is actually doing anything longer than 2 seconds. I know you like to watch a bunch of grown men in tights just stand around, but no thanks for me.
I CAN'T WAIT | 3:16 p.m. July 9, 2008
It should be fun. Ute and BYU fan you will just have to wit until Utah gets a pro football team so you can quit whinning. But hey, we all know if your coach would have let you play varsity then your school would have won state and you would be playing football on sunday. Do the Utes or BYU have a professional football team? Maybe you could play for them.

Re: Roger
I can't wait until NBA players can speak English either (Kirilenko, Okur, Nowitzki, Tony Parker, Ginobili, etc. etc. etc.). Then we'll see some real success! Or maybe once athletes in the NFL start speaking like they at least have a High School education, then NFL will be successful. And of course baseball... Once the best players don't come from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Japan, and other non-confederate flag raising places (like your backyard), then baseball will be fun to watch too.
There are plenty of soccer fans that are "straining" themselves to average 15,000+ each home game to watch 3rd rate players shin kick too. That 15,000 # highly outnumbers the 3 haters on this blog that use the same one-liners...

Roger nailed it! RSL fans only fool themselves in thinking their tickets to watch RSL play puts them into the world of real soccer . That, I think, is the rub; RSL is a house of cards, and all the hype won't cure that.
If the team had honest management who were honest in their intentions and what they want from the public, people would feel much differently about RSL. As it stands, all we think about when the subject of RSL comes up is a dishonest character named David Checketts. First, he openly criticizes Larry Miller, a very popular figure respected for his honesty. Then he calls the Salt Lake County Council "idiots" for not approving his plans, and refuses to release his organization's financial information. He also tries to weasel out of an earlier promise to fund youth soccer. Even now, that promise is still just a promise, without any real money coming forward.
And this display of dishonesty is just what lost him his job in New York City. They couldn't take any more of his deceptions and showed him the door. If we could do the same, RSL soccer would suddenly "discover" thousands of new fans.

MLS has the best all star game of all sports. Mainly because soccer has the advantage of being an international sport. I love American football but their All star game is a sleeper, same with NBA. MLS has many international club competitions (Superliga,Champions League, FIFA Club World Championship, and of course their all star game)
Man U would be my first choice but Arsenal, Liverpool (Chelsea was 2 years ago so they're out) Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan would all be great (Maybe even Boca Juiors)
