What is the purpose of bail?

I believe he visited our house. We have salespeople knocking about every evening. Lately we've noticed that regardless of how you tell the person you're not interested, they seem to be aggressive and angry. While recognizing some people are honest and don't have capital for traditional business, we have a policy of not responding to door-to-door (or phone) salespeople. When asked, most don't have business licenses. One man became enraged when nicely told we're not interested. He kept banging on the door. We were thinking of calling police. Now would you trust a guy acting out in this manner to work on your house? I feared retaliation from him.
