If they really want a dog in the white House they are barking up the wrong tree. Mcain is who will determine what dog gets to play in the rose garden.

Great idea! There are so many incredible dogs in shelters. I'm sure they'll find a good match -- and save a life, too. I just signed the petition...

I and others I know have already signed this petition.
The dog the Obama's get however needs to be hypoallergenic due to allergies suffered by one or both of Sen. Obama's daughters. So that rules out many of the dogs in shelters. But surely an appropriate one could still be found to adopt.
The Obama's should try and get one from Utah's Best Friends Animal Society... they are a very well known and respected organization around the nation and world. Some of Michael Vick's dogs went there.
Oh, and just because a dog is coming from a shelter doesn't mean it has to be a mut... surely the Obama's can find a pure-bread hypoallergenic dog in a shelter somewhere in the country.

This is a great idea and I hope the Obama's do adopt a dog. I also think Malia and Sasha would learn a good lesson if the Obama's were to adopt instead of buying a dog and it would also cause a tidal wave of adoptions across the country.
So I have signed the petition and I hope others will as well.

Lick the wounds | 2:35 p.m. July 16, 2008
Obee is going to need a good dog to lick his wounds come November. Make sure he gets one that likes the Illinois winters---because that is where he will be living.

I think it's a brilliant Idea! It's sad how many dogs are dying in shelters. We rescued our Dog, Buddy, fourteen years ago and he just recently died of old age. But he was sweet and well mannered. Most shelter dogs are. All they want is a good home. I Hope The Obama's seriously consider a shelter dog, maybe then the US will realise how many dogs and cats are really in need of good homes.
Steve - President Obama | 3:21 p.m. July 16, 2008
When Obama becomes President in November (well technically in January of 2009), the rescued dog from the shelter they get would be the "First Dog" and as it lives it up in the White House it can become an ambassador of sorts for animal/pet adoption.
On a side note, just like all the Real Salt Lake articles on this site has regular soccer haters who have nothing better to do than come and bash... so it appears Obama has "hater" groupies too.

Another example of the liberal media anointing Obama already. And libs can't avoid any story about mangy mutts. They are filthy animals without human intervention, and the overwhelming majority of dog owners deceive themselves into thinking they keep the dog clean. Chinese have the right approach: eat them.
Hmmm... Could this type of | 11:50 p.m. July 16, 2008
article be part of the reason the Deseret News is going down? We ousted Chris Cannon out of Congress, maybe the people can do the same with Joe Cannon.

The accusations of the Deseret News (Church Paper) being the "liberal media" are hilarious. This is Joe Cannon's newspaper... People here are clueless.

John McCain does not like dogs, I am guessing. I'd be will to bet that McCain ate dog-meat while in asia. (just speculating).
Now, as for Obama. That man is from Kansas and Hawaii. I am unsure about Kansas, but I know for a fact that Hawaiians doen't eat dog meat.

There are too many dogs (and animals of all types) dying in shelters for people not to consider adoption as their first choice.
Please adopt your pets!
