The Depression of 1893 was one of the worst in American history, with unemployment exceeding 10%. Part of the reason it was so bad was that this high rate was sustained for 5 or 6 consecutive years, killing any chance of a quick recovery. The National Bureau of Economic Research estimated that the economic contraction began in January 1893 and continued until June 1894. There was a brief reprieve as the economy grew until December 1895, but was then hit by a second recession that lasted until June 1897. The depression had been blamed on, among other things, the deflation dating back to the Civil War, the Gold standard and poor monetary policy. The economy was the subject of great debate in the political arena. While campaigning for President in 1896, William Jennings Bryan made his famous proclamation at the conclusion of his speech saying, you shall not crucify mankind on a cross of gold. The issue was whether to endorse the free coinage of Silver at a ratio of Silver to Gold of 16 to 1. Republican William McKinley won the election, and upheld the Gold standard.

Trillions dollars of debt, nothing manufactured in America anymore, Euro and Yen topping the US Dollar, more and more people, and an evil neocon movement to divide the country spells - America may be over as we know it.

This growth slowdown is what the economy needs to stabilize the world and debt. The past growth has been a growth of debt and now we are suffering the consequences. Lets hope that debt is no longer used as a means to increase growth. We need realistic growth with reality and less debt. This also means the government needs to consider paying its own debts to get us in a stabilized and sound economy. Consumers can no longer carry the burden which this growth in debt was depending on. All realms of the economy, government, business, and consumers are being affected and taxing the consumers with more burdensome taxes is not the answer to compensate for losses. Foreign countries basing growth on the american consumers will soon feel the impact as well when their goods being imported meet with resistance in our economy. Consumers should go back to the Made in America products to imporve our economy. Many have forgotten that the american consumer is the economic world power. Debt is passed around the world like poker chips with little or no value until they are cashed in, and no place to cash them in.

"the american consumer is the economic world power"
I am afraid that may be changing to 'WAS the economic power'
You need money, you need buying power in order to spend that money.
The powers that be are hoarding ALL of it while getting us to fight amongst ourselves, ie. conservative v liberal while they amass fortunes.

Brother Chuck Schroeder | 7:17 a.m. July 21, 2008
While the Democrats attacked Republican education reforms, Florida’s graduation rate is up 11% in the last 6 years. While the Democrats attacked and complained tonight, we’ve been able to build an economy and job market that is the envy of the nation, all while providing over $19 billion in tax relief to Florida’s families and small businesses. The Democrats offered no plans to maintain our emergency reserves, and they never once mentioned a plan to add 1.3 million new jobs, like Republicans have done under Governor Jeb Bush. While the Democrats failed to address solutions for crime, they ignored the fact that Florida, under Republicans tough on crime leadership, currently enjoys a crime rate that is lower than it has been in 35 years. It’s disturbing that the Democrat candidates failed to mention that one of them, while in Congress, voted against increased sentences for violent crime or drug-trafficking when the offender is an illegal alien, and even more disturbing, that his opponent voted against a bipartisan bill that would allow all individuals who are accessories to murder to be held accountable.
Vote for McCain and Mitt for VP in 2008.

A vote for McCain is a vote for the same ol' same ol'.

ad hominem = yawn | 8:33 a.m. July 21, 2008
When you read comments like these ...
"Mr. Bush...Republicans...is someone out there???"
"and an evil neocon movement to divide the country"
You know that you're reading the ramblings of people who are woefully uninformed of what's actually going on around them. The knee-jerk reaction of liberals to blame absolutely everything on "republicans" is as tiring as conservatives blaming everything on the evil "democrats" in the 90's and shows that the person doesn't care to read anything beyond the headline.
Ad hominem attacks = yawn ... zzzz

Trash the Federal Reserve! | 8:58 a.m. July 21, 2008
To bail out Fannie Mae and Freddie mac is a huge mistake. Where are the Feds going to get the "cash" to do it? As usual, they'll simple print it - fiat money! And the dollar will continue to plumet. And, when Israel and/or the U.S. goes into Iran, it's all over for the sovreign nation of America. Our people in Washington are running scared! This time their manipulations won't work. The best hing we can do is "undo" our unconsitutional Federal Reserve (or should I say, taka our destiny out of thee hands of the central banks.

This guy should know what he's talking about (ad hominem attack) Neocons wrote the book on ad hominem attacks.
Typical Limbaughite neocons need to create enemy after enemy (liberals, aka Democrats) to survive.
The good news is - America is wise to [bleeps] and November is going to show exactly what America used to be like (without torture, preemptive wars, wire-tapping) before neocons took control and ran this great country into the ground.
You know the type - you know the individual

Yawn is right people are tired of the leadership in Washington. McCain is a vote for the same old crap we have been going through for the past 8 years. GWB has absolutely no idea or solution for the problems we are facing at the end of his second term. If he would have been a CEO of a company he would have been fired a long time ago.
I don't blame anyone being upset with this Rebulican president.

When did the economy go south?
The past year.
And who's been in charge?
The Dems in congress.
The president may sign the check, but it's congress (a democrat congress) that fills it out and for how much. Read your constitution, if you have one. It's a bitter pill to swallow when you look at the facts.

Ah, typical demo class warfare.
You're dreaming if you think a demo congress, and demo white house will bring prosperity.
NoBama wants to end the Bush tax cuts, and put a windfall tax on oil companies, blah, blah, blah.
Sorry, sounds like the good 'ol Jimmy Carter years.
I can hardly wait!
Yeah, that'll show 'em.

more neocon jokes | 10:42 a.m. July 21, 2008
The neocon poster above 10:10 would like us to believe the hands of the present administration are clean on the economy and that it's all Congress' fault.
This of course is based on a taking a healthy surplus before the BushCo CEO's took control, starting a preemptive war (America's first), and now our once great country is close to bankruptcy with the select few in charge making zillions while the rest wonders how they're going to make the gas bill this winter.
The neocons are a constant wellspring of comedy!

When did the economy go south? Over the past year??? Are you kidding me? The economy hasn't been heading north for decades now, it just hasn't been heading south at the same speed all the time. Velocity should never be confused with direction. And who's to blame? How about Democrats, Republicans, Liberals, Conservatives, Socialists, Moderates, Independents, etc., etc. Anyone who supports the Federal Reserve and the central banking system is culpable.

Hah, yeah let's elect a socialist in November. Our cars will all run on "hope" and "change". You don't need experience to be president, just a good speechwriter.

Gold futures finished higher Monday, getting a boost from rising oil prices and modest weakness of the U.S. dollar. Gold for August delivery rose $5.70 to end at $963.70 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Earlier, gold hit an intraday high of $966.50 an ounce. The new week started out on a firm note in the precious-metals complex as a combination of geopolitics and weather boosted crude-oil prices. Crude futures rose Monday for the first time in five sessions, rebounding from last week's biggest weekly losses, after multilateral talks over Iran's controversial nuclear program didn't yield progress and as Tropical Storm Dolly headed toward the western Gulf of Mexico. The dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a trade-weighted basket of currencies, was down 0.1% at 72.069.
