NATIONAL CHAMPS THIS YEAR WATCH AND SEE
Oh Jan. | 1:53 a.m. July 22, 2008
This article has some glaring grammatical errors.

1) "Jan could care less" So there is less that he could care? The correct term is couldn't care less.

2)"It's be kind of weird, but nice."
Huh?

I know Jan and he is a lot smarter than this article makes him sound.

Go Cougars!

football is worthless.

I am a big time U fan and I will give BYU credit for being picked by the media to be # 1 at the end. A team with a streak of 16-straight Mountain West Conference football wins should be picked # 1. Cougars you better enjoy while it last because it wont last long. My Utes will take over and take care of business.
Go UTES…..

is clueless. Go back to your knitting and stop spamming football articles with worthless comments.

I'm really surprised Dick didn't drench us with his golf tee times, like we care.
Championships | 7:20 a.m. July 22, 2008
No surprise that BYU is picked #1. They're used to winning conference championships and being nationally ranked; having a bullseye on their backs will simply make them work harder to stay on top.

This team has the talent and experience to accomplish even more. The only question is whether they'll have the focus, heart, and never-say-die attitude to succeed in ALL of their goals.

Utah and TCU will be their toughest opponents, in conference or out, but Air Force and New Mexico could also provide some stiff challenges.

A BCS invite is a lock if BYU (or Utah) runs the table, with a VERY, VERY slight possibility of BYU playing in the National Championship game.

There are way too many factors for a non-BCS team to overcome to be considered a serious candidate for a National Championship, yet. It all starts with taking care of business in August/September, howwever, and then hoping for the cards to fall right on the national scene.

Try scoring against UNLV before you take the Cougars on.
Preseason MWC Poll | 7:36 a.m. July 22, 2008
The media has the correct order, except for Air Force and Wyoming.

1. BYU
2. Utah
3. TCU
4. New Mexico
5. Air Force
6. Wyoming
7. San Diego State
8. Colorado State
9. UNLV

BYU, Utah and TCU will all be very good and the conference champion will be one of those three.

Utah has the most favorable schedule, playing both TCU and Utah at home. BYU has the most difficult schedule playing both TCU and Utah on the road.

Bronco could win the national championship all by himself. He doesn't need the team to execute at a high level of high levels of execution.
Correction | 8:19 a.m. July 22, 2008
Utah has the most favorable schedule, playing both TCU and BYU at home.
as expected | 8:36 a.m. July 22, 2008
The Cougars are motivated to keep their #1 MWC ranking and finish undefeated again this year in conference. I'd say their chances of doing this are very good.

The utes are motivated to show everyone they are the best in the MWC. I'd say their chances of defending their 3rd place finish are also very good.

In the near future Whittingham will make a great defensive coordinator at BYU, humbly serving under Bronco Mendenhall.

Isn't it great that our little brothers up north are trying so hard to be a really good team like their big brothers at BYU? That's so special.
BYU Blue in T.F. | 8:48 a.m. July 22, 2008
I see the potential at BYU to do great things this year. The talent is there--but so is the expectation. I worry, though, about the "big head" factor. You get a bunch of guys thinking they are pretty good, they don't get mentally ready and they get dumped by an inferior team or two. I hope I am wrong but I can almost smell it coming.
Cougar Blue | 9:08 a.m. July 22, 2008
There is an fairly good chance that BYU could win the national championship. An undefeated season will definately get us into a BCS game, but if all other teams lose once then we should be playing for the championship. I can't see us losing to anyone on our schedule.
Dray | 9:44 a.m. July 22, 2008
I can see BYU being ranked #1 in the preseason MWC poll, but come on, the big boys would never let a team from the MWC play in the National Championship. They could win every game by 50 and they still wouldn't be in it. Let's be realistic. Utah's team from 2004 was as good as anybody that season and they got to play the worst team to get a BCS automatic berth that season. Cougar fans don't need to worry about that anyways because the Utes are going to stomp them at RES this season. GO UTES!!!
Utah Cougar | 10:32 a.m. July 22, 2008
This year it is very unlikely that BYU will make it to the National championship. If all you have to do is have an undefeated season, then Hawaii should have been playing for the NC, along with Boise State and Utah. It doesn't work the same for us mid major conferences. The big boys don't take us seriously unless we go undefeated for several years in a row. It is going to be a group effort. First, undefeated, second, Utah undefeated until BYU (this includes beating Michigan and I sure hope they can pull it off). Third, Ohio state and the entire SEC losing at least one game, hopefully two. And four, a whole bunch of luck! But whatever happens, it's sure to be a fun ride.
DIOS, go read the Martha Stewart Columns if you don't like football.
Whoa Nelly | 10:44 a.m. July 22, 2008
Let's wait and see what kind of defense the Cougs come up with before we celebrate an undefeated season, MWC championship, or BCS game. The offense should be great this year, but let's see what they do on the field. I enjoy Bronco's approach of one game at a time. Let's worry about Northern Iowa. Go Cougs!
Can't wait for football to start | 11:49 a.m. July 22, 2008
At least the MWC media day is sort of the beginning of the football season. Even if no one has even starting fall camp yet...it's almost time for some football.

I agree that the pre-season hype doesn't mean much, except without some pre-season hype it's hard for a non-BCS team to make it into a BCS game. I think if either BYU or Utah goes undefeated, they'll make it into a BCS game. They're both getting enough hype already to make that happen.

I'd be surprised to see Utah beat Michigan on the road. I know, I know...Michigan lost to Appalachian State (however you spell it) last year and they have a new coach and new offense. It just seems unlikely to me that Utah can pull that off. But, if they win that game, they could be on a huge roll for the rest of the year.

I think BYU's biggest hurdle will be Washington in Seattle. That's a really hard place win for any team, even when the Huskies aren't very good. So if BYU can get come back from Seattle undefeated, I think we're headed for a huge showdown in SLC in November.

Can't wait.
A Little Perspective Please! | 11:56 a.m. July 22, 2008
Even as a long time BYU Fan and Season Ticket Holder, I get a little tired of the ridiculously high expectations that are being placed on this year's team. Sure, the national media exposure is a good thing since it guarantees BYU a BCS berth if they go undefeated, but even being optimistic there's only about a 30% chance of an undefeated season. Talk of a National Championship is just absurd for a non-BCS team before a single game has been played. It just makes all BYU fans look stupid when National Championship finds its way into preseason posts (which makes me wonder if it's not Ute fans posing as BYU posters), and it puts an unfairly negative light on BYU if they do lose a game or two, as if an 11-1 or 10-2 season were something to be ashamed of. Also, I'll have to put up with Ute Fans pointing out that ALL BYU fans thought they were going to win a NC, as if the Ute Trolls posting as BYU fans spoke for BYU fans everywhere.
Let's get ready to rumble! | 1:37 p.m. July 22, 2008
Stop all the talk and let's prove it on the field. BYU or Utah, whatever, let's play some football.
Go Cougs! | 1:50 p.m. July 22, 2008
BYU won't be in the NC game this year. Not a chance. Not even if they beat everyone by 50.

But next year? Hey, if BYU runs the table this year AND next--it would be hard to keep them out.

But that's definately a case of counting not just your chickens, but your chickens chickens before they hatch.
Great expectations | 2:03 p.m. July 22, 2008
There's nothing wrong with a team or its fans having high expectations. EVERY college football team in the country sets goals, many of them very lofty, best-case-scenario type goals.

Even if there's only a VERY slim chance of actually achieving all of their goals, that means there IS a chance of achieving their goals.

As a fan I'd much rather be "disappointed" in an 11-1 or 10-2 season, than be satisfied with an 8-4 season.

If you never raise the bar above 6 feet, how will you ever know if you could have cleared 7 feet?

In their "ridiculously high expectations," BYU fans are raising the bar for the BYU team and the rest of the MWC, raising expectations that anything is possible, even if you play in a backwoods, non-BCS conference.

Every team that is be ranked in the top 15 preseason and will be in the top 10 by October if they get through September undefeated, should be thinking possible national championship.

Dick Harmon: I'm nick-picking, but I can't stand it when people misuse the phrase "couldn't care less". You said that Jan Jorgensen "could care less" about the preseason awards. Unless you were quoting him verbatim, the expression is "couldn't care less".
Bo Diddley Tech | 3:44 p.m. July 22, 2008
Harline's still not in the NFL.
National Championship? | 4:03 p.m. July 22, 2008
No. No way. Not a chance in Zarahemla that this happens.

Why you ask? Hmm lets see....NORTHERN IOWA!!!

Ya know football? I play football!
Give it up! | 7:08 p.m. July 22, 2008
BYU cannot win a National Championship!. Undefeated or not. Any of the top ten teams in the country would love to have BYU's schedule. Can you imagine LSU or Florida only having to play the MWC schedule instead of the SEC!. Give it up. So BYU goes undefeated, who have they played.
RE: Cougar Blue | 7:17 p.m. July 22, 2008
You said it best, you can't see BYU losing to anyone on their schedule. That is exactly why they will not win a Natioanl Championship....Schedule.

Ohio State plays USC in their third game of the year, Gerogia has to play LSC, Auburn and Florida.
Undefeated means very little when you don't play anyone. Even Utah plays Michigan, they have a much better chance if they go undefeated than BYU does of any chance at a NC.
Blue Blood... | 7:52 p.m. July 22, 2008
Go Cougars!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brettski | 8:13 p.m. July 22, 2008
Good luck to the cougs until late November. You have the makings of a good team as do the Utes. Here's to a great game in November. The state of UTAH is the only reason the MWC isn't behind the Sun Belt conference...

Gooooooo Utes!
Woody | 10:20 p.m. July 22, 2008
I'm not a ute fan but I'll say my bit on them and the Utes. I'm worried that the BYU big head will be the only way they beat BYU. They have a great team but over the course of a season, any defeat or victory over teams, hard fought, will be the best motivator, i think.
Re: Championships | 7:20 a.m. | 7:21 a.m. July 23, 2008
ANY non-BCS team – even Utah St. – who finishes their season undefeated has a chance to play in the BCS, so all this talk about IF Utah, TCU, and the TDS are successful in running the table is only stating the obvious.
Re: A Little Perspective Please | 7:21 a.m. July 23, 2008
“It makes all BYU fans look stupid when National Championship finds its way into preseason posts (which makes me wonder if it’s not Ute fans posing as BYU posters)”

Nope. It’s not our guys. They’re YOURS! And you all DO look stupid. Especially with the innate inability to accept personal responsibility by you and your kind. Always trying to blame Ute fans, referees, and East Coast biases for your own inadequacies.

RE: A Little Perspective Please

So there are no Ute imposters at all? Maybe you went to school at Naive U. It happens all the time on these posts.
