Whenever you trash talk and hype the bowl-game winning streak, or out-of-conference road wins against ranked BCS schools, maybe you will remember this quote from your own coach.

"Our goal is to win the Mountain West Conference," he [Coach Whittingham] said. "That's first and foremost. That's eluded us the past three years. That's the one thing we can control."

Note the emphasis in the article on starting slow, and playing inconsistently against lesser opponents.

Not much room to trash talk until you reach the goal that is "first and foremost."

Good luck Utah!

silly yewts,
Here at BYU, we have a national championship, a heisman winner, more attractive fans and we own the overall series against you. Bronco is twice the coach Urban Crier was. what do you have?

the only pressure is not to get blown out by us for a third straight year.

4th and 18.

BYU Rose Bowl Champions 09, National Champions 10.
GO UTES | 2:08 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
I love the utes just got season tickets. Can't wait for the big house its going to be sick. Going into the season with high hopes. Starting out with a victory against Michigan would be huge.

I am a BYU fan but I wish all the best for Utah. I hope coming into the Nov game both teams are undefeated. I hope the players stay healthy and the game is won on the last play. Go Utes and Cougars!!!
Heres to a great year.
Reality check | 7:16 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Um UVU dude perhaps an reading comprehension class is in order, and some football history as well. This wasn't a eivalry until Lavell took over, he has 80% if not more of your wins against Utah. You hardly own the series check the record books. As for 1984, thanks to that we have the current BCS fiasco, something to be very proud of being the reason for, not only did your MNC come with a win over a 6-5 Michigan team it was solely at the wqhim of voters unlike the NCAA toruney which truly decides it on the filed of comptetition. Qin the next 20 games or so against the utes to EVEN up the series and then MAYBE you can talk about how you own Utah, Speaking of ownership as of late Utah has owned you in the house that Lavell and free ticket give aways built. parenthetically your program was a doormat prior to Lavell, Crowton was a disaster and the jury is still out on your current coach, two good years don't make a dynasty.

My Team's better than your team! Nana nana na na!
BYU Fan | 7:34 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Good luck, Utes, against Michigan. I truly hope you win. That would be great for the whole state of Utah.

I hope you win them all, right up until you play my beloved Cougars.

Good luck, Utah!

UVU Dude-

Utah article bro! Byu fans who are talking about winning a national championship this year, and still talking about 4th and 18 are just plain SCARED of the Utes!
Re: UVU dud | 7:42 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Actually, Utah owns the overall series something like 52-33-4. So you were almost right. Only off by a handful of games.

Who knew that losing by 2 and 7 was being blown out? I thought a blow out was when a team beat the other by a score of 52-21 . . . ya know, like UTAH did to BYU in '04??!!

Bronco is not a great coach. He is a good coach that has taken advantage of a Senior heavy offense in '06 and a Senior heavy defense in '07. With a very inexperienced defense coupled with a still very young offense, BYU will struggle to win 8 games this year.

Kyle is also a good coach who has yet to have a senior heavy offense or defense, until this year. Yes sir, the Utes are poised for a MWC championship and 11+ wins.
Texas Cougar | 7:45 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Its nice to see BYU and Utah have good teams simultaneously. I'm sure Brian Johnson will be an excellent team leader this year, and Casteel will have a breakout season (though I don't think he's going to win the Heisman). Here's to hoping that both BYU and Utah meet at the end of the year undefeated (or close to it). Finally, the rivalry might get some of the national coverage it rightly deserves.
re: UVU dude | 7:48 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Let me guess, you are also more righteous? Here's hoping for more "magic both on and off the field" this year!
Not quite right there dude | 7:55 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
UVU, are you at UVU, or BYU? You don't own the overall record, Utah does. Your subjective opinion about your attractiveness is bizarre to say the least, and completely asinine to put it bluntly. And the last two games between us have hardly been blowouts, you should check the scores. I strongly recommend that reality check mentioned above.

Utes by 5 | 8:08 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
byu fans are idots and dn't knew what they are taking abouty. The UTEs will kick there butt again this year. We own byu!!!!!!!!!

Yawn.
Anonymous | 8:15 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
This is the whole problem about Utah and BYU: the fans (and some media).

I see it from the Utah perspective. Lavell and Bronco seem like nice enough guys. The university isn't all that bad. It's the morons that have to put down UU every chance they get (and create some they don't) that gives the whole bitter feeling to the state.
Lehi's Larry | 8:37 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Why are byu fans so obsessed with articles pertaining to Utah?
I've never seen a group so obsessed with their rivals than byu fans.
Anonymous | 8:43 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
In the face of pressure, the utes usually are able to make it to the middle of the season at .500. That's not bad for a utah team, right?
How to spot a Troll | 9:05 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Watch for rediculous logic...even for TDS fans.

"UVU dude" said...

(a) "Here at BYU,..."

UVU is not at BYU.

(b) "...we have a national championship, a heisman

winner,...and we own the overall series against

you."

UVU has no NC, Heismans, nor series against the

U. No need to tell TDS fans the overall

series. They're well versed in it. That's why

all they can do to spout off is say,

"Scoreboard", "our 1-AA opponent is better than

your 1-AA opponent", or "our stadium sells more

tickets than your stadium". TDS fans are also

keenly aware of their Bowl records vs. ours.

Watch for multiple, and EXTREMELY poor spelling, from within a single comment. Especially easy words.

"Utes by 5" misspelled:

(a) idots *idiots*
(b) dn't *didn't*
(c) taking *talking*
(d) abouty *about* --> may have been an inadvertent

add'l keystroke though
(e) there *their*

If you get sucked in by such obvious provocation, you're a fool. Used to be TDS fans were the most easily duped, but I see 5 of our guys got sucked in by the next 9 posts. At least the 10th poster, "UVU Dude | 7:58 a.m." saw through it.
re:uvu | 9:11 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
So now we have "wanna be" byu fans trying to make a stab at the utes? Get a life and a real school!

Go utes, win them all!
Tiresome | 9:22 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Trash talking on each other's story is tiresome and immature. Utah does have a good program. and I am a Cougar fan through and through.

UVU dude is about as dumb as a person can be and still associate with a university. Obviously not smart enough to get into either Utah or BYU. Oh well.

If you're going to compare records, look them up. Utahhad a major head start in the series and not even LaVell could do more than make it somewhat respectable. It's not likely anyone else will ever totally wipe out the defecit. That being said, it has been a lot mroe competitive in the last two decades.
Whoa Nellie | 9:44 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
How to spot a troll is on target. You did miss one other error by Utes by 5. BYU should be all capital letters and not lowercase letters.

Furthermore, you seemed to have learned spelling from Urban Meyer. It seems even he couldn't spell BYU and just started calling that university the team down south. How childish that is.

Good article on Utah. They should be favored in most games this year, including their first game.
Long-time Utah Fan | 9:45 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
The more things change the more they stay the same. I graduated from Utah in 1978 and the fan rhetoric hasn't changed much - which is really okay, isn't it? "Fans" - short for "fanatics" is really what it's all about in sports. The back and forth jibing is okay. That's what keeps it interesting from year to year. Having said that, there is no way BYU is going to beat Utah this year. Utah is going to blow them out, there will be talk about Bronco being fired, the BYU cheerleaders are going to get fat and Kyle Whittingham is going to get Mountain West Coach of the Year. Read it and weep you Happy Valley cry babies!
jd | 9:52 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Whittingham is a mediocre coach at best, 11 plus wins is a pipe dream. Utes fans get ready for another mediocre season, with losses to a few medicre teams.....Utah football...YAWN
re: Lehi's Larry | 10:02 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Except U of U fans.
Re Re | 10:17 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Real good there man. Next thing you know your dad will be able to beat up my dad right? Some BYU fans drive me crazy.
Both teams undefeated. | 10:25 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
In order for the conference to gain any real noteriety we need to have the championship game played with 2 undefeated teams and then the winner may play for the national championship odds are 10/90
injury excuses | 10:27 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Oh brother, here come the injury excuses already and they haven't even played a game yet ("...Whittingham said. "And we've got to stay healthy." "...or at least a little less bad luck, such as the spate of early season injuries that crippled them a year ago.").

Crippled them? A good team is going to be able to overcome injuries because they will have something called DEPTH and their coaches will have prepared the backups to step in without missing hardly a beat. Or their players will simply be tough enough to play anyway and still be quite productive (like Max Hall last year).

Saying "we couldn't win due to injuries" or because "we're young and inexperienced" is for losers who make excuses for not doing their jobs. The only thing a head coach should say after a loss is "they played better than we did, they were better prepared than we were".

That's why I'm glad we don't have Crowton as our HC anymore. Too bad u guys have Whit.

Ute Fan (Utah County) | 10:29 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Are we saying that the Utes are Appalachian State 2008, and they are going to take out the Michigan outfit on their field? I hardly think that will happen. They will be defeated soundly, and come back in body bags, just as Utah State does when it plays BCS teams on the road. This is nothing more that a payday for the Utes, and a thumping to boot. Why not schedule Appalachian State first and see if they can handle them? If the Utes go for a 6-6, or 7-5 every year, which is the best possible scenario playing 2 to 3 BCS teams each season, then the fans should be satisfied, because they will always go to a bowl.....30 plus bowls per year is simply a joke. Why don't they just designate evey game on the schedule a bowl game? Why don't the 1-A universities just play their season (12 games), then say that everyone is in a playoffs. Play games every 5 days, and with 8 or 9 rounds we would have the playoffs over with by the end of January. Or better yet, let's creat a super 100 group of teams and apply the playoffs described.
Unrealistic | 10:35 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
The combination of chance and skill involved in an undefeated season makes the odds of achieving such a thing twice beyond astronomical.

The Utes' great season and trip to the BCS were once in a generation opportunities.

The same thing applies to the Cougars.

The stars will have to align for the BCS to happen for either school. That's the beauty of belonging to a cartel: the cartel always wins.
Re: Whoa Nellie | 10:41 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
"It seems even he couldn't spell BYU and just started calling that university the team down south. How childish is that."

About as childish as half of your fellow BYU fans calling Utah the "Yewts" and Utah fans calling BYU fans "Zoobies". Maturity at every level
Rose Bowl? En Serio? | 10:56 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Is UVU dude suggesting that BYU will win the rose bowl this year? I'd be glad to see either team make a BCS game at the end of this season, but it's probably best not to place your hopes on a bowl game that is exclusive to the PAC-10 and Big 10 champs... the PAC-10's dedication to that traditional exclusion is one of the many reasons we all get to enjoy the lopsided BCS system for many years to come.
Unbearable Pressure | 10:57 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
The Utes can relieve the unbearable pressure of expectations by promptly lowering them (like last season). Just lose three straight to start the season and things should be back to normal.
Lavell Mediocre | 11:19 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Re: jd

If 9-4 is mediocre, then BYU was mediocre to bad for 17 years under Lavell Edwards.

BYU was 9-4 or worse in 17 of Lavell's years as BYU head coach.
Observer | 11:28 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Hope he's not feeling any pressure from me. I don't care. It's just football.
happens every year | 11:47 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
then the break down..think UCLA but I say one of the unexpected teams is going to hand it to both of them somewhere along the way!
Bobby Miles Doopay | 11:48 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
I a BYU fan, wishing you the best. Hoping both teams stay healthy until Nov 22nd.

This could be the year that both teams look back at and say "remember 2008".

I come from the school of thought that success at Utah does not diminish BYU, and likewise.

Urban, Lavell, Kyel and Bronco are all great coaches, and this season should be fun.

Let's all enjoy the year.
Notlim | 11:59 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
@jd
please know I am pleased with Utah's "mediocre at best" coach.

it will be interesting to see how victories shake out this season; as well as the next 5 - 10 years.

were you really calling Lavell E a mediocre coach as well?

See you Quest for Perfection folks in the Rose Bowl I guess - no magic about that one either
BYU in the rose bowl? | 12:16 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
BYU going to the rose bowl, seriously? Oh yeah i forgot Bronco loaded the schedule with some GREAT pac 10 teams, Washington and UCLA, and also threw in Northern Iowa. It is because of schedules like that the mountain west has a bad name. If BYU had half the juevos Utah had they would throw in some formitable competition. This is why Utah will have a better season and a better shot at a BCS game.
Faster offense
Faster Defense
Better special Teams
Utah is all around the better team this season
Cugar fans best be praying string bean max hall doesnt fold in half after his first hit of the season
RE: Injury excuses | 12:20 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
OK, excuses are not awesome, but I do give my Utes a break for last year with the horrid bad luck of injuries. You speak of depth, but the reality of a non-BCS school is no depth - no good players will settle for backup at a mid-major school. Just imagine if Hall had a dislocated shoulder, missed 3-4 games and couldn't throw when he did play. That in addition to Unga and Collie out for the season after 1.5 games. I doubt that Bronco could pull off 9 wins in a season like that. You were within 2 "miracle" plays of only winning 9 games at full strength. Count your past blessings, Cougs, cuz Instant Karma's gonna get you.
Chris | 12:27 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
I for one am excited to see some of the new guys in camp and see what they can do: I'm excited to see Aiona Key, Mo Neal and Afa Garrigan. The Secondary and Linebackers look to lights out.
I'm looking forward to the Utes fall camp and upcoming game in the Big House.
Go Utes!!
Go Blue | 12:28 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Michigan is going to demolish Utah in the game opener. They are bigger, stronger, faster and Coach Rod is one of the best coaches in college football. After last year's App. State debacle you can bet the Wolverines are not going to look past the Utes. 110,000 screaming fans will cheer on the Wolverines to victory. No disrespect intended to the Utes--they can still have a great season and maybe win the MW conference if BYU chokes--but they ARE NOT going to win in Big House.
BYU fan | 12:40 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Here is to a great season Utah.
Tired of talk | 1:06 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
All this talking is starting to get on my nerves, I'm so ready for football season to get started, that is the only way this will get settled.

But I cant resist, Utah should defeat michigan but if they dont it will take some pressure off of them about the BCS and make them focus better on the MWC.
WinSum | 1:07 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
The best of all "local worlds" is for Utah and BYU to both do great..... Would even hope the Aggies can turn it around too.
Best of wishes to all the teams. Utah and BYU have great schools, coaches and programs and some class athletes. My only concern is for the trash-talking-fans who need to get a life....this is a great time for Utah and BYU and I hope they both do exceptionally well.
Re: UVU dude | 1:15 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Your comment couldn't be more off the mark. First of all, BYU has a 0% chance of getting into the Rose Bowl because the Rose Bowl tries to match Pac 10 and Big 10 teams for that game (unless it is for a national championship). Second, the BCS was designed so that teams like BYU will not have the opportunity to play for the title. Even if BYU goes undefeated the next 2 years, it would be difficult because of such a weak SOS. Third, you should know better than anyone that all the good looking college kids are attending UVU. Have you seen a picture of the BYU cheerleaders?
You can't be serious | 1:31 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
I don't hate the Utes but Ute fan, well.... I just can't stand the argument that Utah owns the head to head record over the Y. Look 1922 doesn't count, the 1930's don't count, 40's don't count. If the game was played with leather helmets - sorry doesn't count. Lets look at modern day football, shall we. Since 1970, BYU 25 Utah 13 (Wikipedia).
Are you Joking?????? | 1:38 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
If you're only going to include "modern day football" then you better start some time in the mid 90s because the game of football is as different today compared to 1970 or even 1980 as it is when compared to pre-1970. The athletes are bigger, faster, stronger, the equipment is night & day better than what was around in the 70s and 80s, offenses are more complex, and on and on.

The series starts in 1970 . . . Don't make me laugh. Why don't you just say what you really mean and say the series started when BYU got good?
Re: You can't be serious | 1:49 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Why don't you start the modern era of college football circa 2006? That way, you could claim to be undefeated in the series.

The modern era for UCLA, however, would have to start circa Dec. 2007.

GO ZOOBS!
