I guess this is good news, although I'm not going to empty out the frig of milk in celebration. When a guy is also offered by just Baylor, a team that will not win a Big 12 game in 2008, I have to wonder what everyone else knows that BYU and Baylor don't.

I guess size matters at BYU, thats a big kid. I wonder if he is good or JUST big.

I'd say interest--while not quite scholarship offers--from Texas and Virginia Tech as a junior in high school isn't so bad.

Great find! Goood Job Cougs. Huge kid!
way to be | 9:55 a.m. Aug. 8, 2008
I love the part where the recruit said its just the best fit for him to progress on the field and as a man. Now that is a player who has his head on straight and priorities in order. Way to be son, good luck this up coming season.

The reports on him say the kid has a lot of upside. He's explosive, has great drive, but needs some help on his footwork when it comes to pass protection. One of the reasons why they project him as an interior lineman rather than a tackle. Great short yardage speed for his size. Questionable on staminia though. Seemed to gas out at the end of games. Wasn't offered yet, because most teams want to sit and see how he performs his senior year. He only went to the Y camp this summer. He's a bit of a sleeper because of lack of exposure and the fact that his high school isn't a powerhouse in Texas football. it will be interesting to see how he does.

I bet you, Bronco will trim him down to 300-310 when the time comes. I'm not saying he can't, but a lineman these days, needed to be able run and not run out of gas.

three a days? | 11:45 a.m. Aug. 8, 2008
The NCAA has finally gotten smart and limited colleges to a total of three practices every two days, but of course, high schools go three times every day.

Oh, and now Ute Conference football has 8 year olds starting practice a week earlier than colleges.

Can we say OUT OF CONTROL?

I have a friend with two sons in the NFL, and he wouldn't let them play football until the 8th grade. Why? So they wouldn't get burned out, injured, worn out, but the wannabe little leagues and high schools think more is better.

Only an offer is an offer!
BYU has over the years, along with help from the Daily Herald, inflated the reputations of the kids on signing day by listing all the teams "interested" in the kid. My son, since the first game he actually started in high school (basketball as a sophomore) got mail from most all the schools and JC's in the intermountain and PAC-10 area. Oregon and Cal sent the most mail, while the others sent sheets to fill out for his interest level. One could say that he had interest from around 25 Div-1 schools, however he never had an offer, choosing instead to play football for Montana.
When a kid is being "bragged up" on signing day or when making a verbal, with all the top schools being listed; only pay attention to the offers made in writing. Many kids list attention, camps, interest, and almost offers or promised offers, and that sounds wonderful, but again only written offers matter. At some point in time BYU will have made a letter contact with maybe 300 kids for those 16-18 available grant-in-aids given in 2009.
Nice find | 1:15 p.m. Aug. 8, 2008
Wait until he gets the enthusiasm from his team mates in the locker room and the conditioning coach has some time with him. He'll be as good physically as he seems to be personally.

I seriously doubt that Bronco or any of the other BYU coaches give a lick about what other schools are recruiting a kid they're interested in. The ONLY thing they're concerned about is whether the kid will be a good fit in the BYU football program.

All of the "this kid was recruited by..." hype is simply for fan and media consumption.

As Bronco said, he couldn't care less how many stars a player has next to his name before he comes to BYU (or how many other schools recruited him), the only thing Bronco cares about is how stars he'll have "figuratively" after his name while he's playing for BYU.

If Bronco and the rest of the BYU coaching staff believes that a kid is good enough, or has the potential to be good enough, to play for BYU, that should be good enough for fans of BYU football.

Always some one trying to bring byu dow about who they recruit or bring into the program. Dis gruntled fans from some other school. Wonder where?

Wonder if its those bcs busters?

Would rather be a ute buster and MWC buster. The BCS is next. You guys are just a bunch of wnna-be byu busters. Gotta win to talk?????

Re: SJ Bobkins- Coach Mendenhall may have said that about the number of stars but he also said a few days ago that the last two who they are still pursuing (the 5 star LB out of Hawaii & another kid who I can't remember) are the highest ranked players they have ever had the potential to get. He knows that for the team to get better and consistently play at a national level they have to sign more 4 & 5 star players. At the same time he also likes to give walk-ons an equal opportunity. You can be sure that they (all the coaches who are recruiting) are trying to get the very best players they can who will fit into their program. If a player is a great fit, in terms of the honor code, etc., then they would much rather get a 5 star than a 4, and a 4 star than a 3, etc.

Better to worry about him going on a mission than going to jail as at some schools we know.

Not often do you get a player at BYU who is actually bigger than the co-eds. The Golden Corral will have to increase its inventory.
