Mike Sorenson dreams of a Utah victory.
Ridiculous article | 9:53 a.m. Sept. 1, 2008
Give me a break Sorensen. All this talk of an undefeated season for both teams is extremely premature and does a huge diservice to both schools. MWC is tougher than you might think and it is never easy to beat everyone on your schedule regardless of who you play. The more people like you build it up the more likely there will be a let down by both teams.

Who says TCU can't beat Oklahoma, their offense is improved and their defense is always tough.

This is a stupid headline and stupid article.

When is BYU/Utah NOT a showdown? Some writers predict all this stupid stuff and other writers say "season hasn't even started yet - this is premature.".

Don't write silly stuff. Coaches and teams take things one game at a time. Are you any better?
Predicting gets old and it's never right. You are no exception.
This is Great! | 11:32 a.m. Sept. 1, 2008
Come on "Ridiculous Article" and "Get Real" - this talk of big things for both teams have brought a ton of added excitement. You don't think the Utah - BYU rivalry can get any more exciting? An undefeated record and BCS bowl on the line for both teams November 22nd would make it the most anticipated and exciting rivalry game to date. The coaches and players don't (or shouldn't) read these articles and blogs. They are for the fans and the hype makes it much more exciting for the fans. If undefeated talk is just too much for you to handle then don't read the papers or blogs cause as long as both teams keep winning it will only increase. Keep it up Sorenson and ignore those who don't want to join in on the excitement of all the possibilities this season and rivalry can possibly be. One loss and the discussion changes but in the meantime the more anticipation and dreaming the better!!!
Anonymous | 11:45 a.m. Sept. 1, 2008
Uh, a little premature for this kind of talk don't you think?
RE: This is great! | 12:10 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
I am soooo with you!

A) Who shouldn't have high expectations at the beginning of the season? Well, okay, besides Utah State, and it is classless to pick on them.

B) If reality comes crashing down, it will happen soon enough, but why wait till the end of a perfect season to savor it? Enjoy it every minute of the way?

C) The more people who buy into the hype as it snow balls, the better the chance of it becoming bigger than life on a national scale, not just Utah +.

D) When it comes to my religion, my family, my job - I need to see things as they really are. Football? I can indulge in some fantasy, please?

Big game for ya all. Utes wiped their feet on the big 10.

"On track"....Utah beat a good "program" installing a new offense, with a new coach, and Utah fizzled in the 2nd half...Remember they beat UCLA 44-7 last year then lost to UNLV the next week 28-0

BYU looked decent, but the game was still in question in 4th quarter, or at least late in the 3rd, and they were playing a D1aa team.

Both teams could easily be "on track" to meet for something important, but how could anybody know that after one game?

Come on....let this thing play out, or you'll end up being shocked by TCU or some other MWC school. Neither one of your programs is as great as you or the Utah media thinks.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiight | 2:57 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
ut still needs to get over their high from this week. OSU is no cake walk. Neither is Wyoming, for obvious reasons, UNLV, for obvious reasons, and don't forget about their pathetic 1-AA team. UNM was supposed be much more improved, and look what TCU did on the road to them. Anyone is living in a dream fantasy land if they think both teams will be undefeated by Nov. BYU has proved they can walk through the conference, while UT is barely lucky to get 3rd. My prediction, like hilarious, is a let down at home, just like they did vs. UNLV. History always repeats itself with this school.
Re: Riiiiiiiiiiiight | 3:16 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
Whatever. You don't really believe that. You know know full well the Utes will take down the Rebels. That's why you didn't have the stones to sign your name.

Did you read the article? | 4:26 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
He isn't hyping it up, but pointing out something he's dreaming for - the perfect match-up at the end of the season. Any rational person would not place $10 on the odds that the two teams meet undefeated, but it's something to cheer for, just like Michael Phelps winning 8 gold medals at the olympics and setting world records in most of them... oh wait, he did that, probably because he first thought it was possible.
I always want to see MWC teams do well so the conference gets the respect it deserves, but I'm even more fanatical (as opposed to rational) in cheering on the utes and cougs this year because of the national attention two undefeated MWC teams would be at the end of the season.
As for TCU, they have a decent chance of beating Oklahoma. They play well on the road and they seem more disciplined than other MWC teams. Too bad Utah didn't get a chance to play against Oklahoma as a consolation for being left out of the more meaningful BCS bowl games in 2004.
Good luck to both teams until November when I hope the Utes bring home a 50 - 21 victory.
Texas Cougar | 4:26 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
It is fun to dream, isn't it. I would love to see both teams playing each other for a chance to go to the BCS this year.

By the way, I never would have believed that BYU drew the tougher team this past weekend. While Northern Iowa (I think that's who it was) looked like a weak division I-A school that would probably go 3-9 this season, Michigan looked like a team that won't win a game all year. Michigan only seemed better than UNI on the offensive and defensive lines (and I bet Rich Rodriguez would love to have the UNI quarterback for his system). That is the worst I've ever seen a Michigan team play...EVER.
re hilarious | 4:29 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
it was 44-6! Don't give UCLA more credit than they deserve! Go utes.
re hilarious | 5:03 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
Byu 17 Utes 10, go cougs.
grumpolman | 5:11 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
Wouldn't it be funny if Utah went undefeated and then lost to Weber State. It could happen, Mack's revenge, a much improved Weber could possibly out score the Utes. It would be the biggest upset in the states history, now that's what I dream about.
Texas Ute | 7:54 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
What is the harm in getting your hopes up? Some of you sound so scared to fail that you can't even allow yourselves to think about how incredible this would be. So what if it doesn't happen! Let people talk, I think as fans we are entitled to high expectations. Plus I love watching ZOOBIE QBs cry on camera. Wouldn't it be beautiful if the entire nation was given that same opportunity. The only way that will happen is if this game means something.

If Brian can pull his head out and find some intangibles we will be undefeated going into that game.

Let the count down to Nov 22nd begin baby!
Ute in Philadelphia | 8:40 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
I don't see what would be the point in talking about the BCS after week one. No team EVER played in a BCS game with fewer than 8 wins. We've only won 1 game. Even WITH an 8-win season, we won't get there. BCS talk needs to be tabled until late November.

Michigan is now in the past. I see a lot of stats being thrown around that have little to do with expectations against UNLV. They're really the only team that matters now.
re: texas ute | 8:54 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
And we like seeing coach kyle cry on tv. Get ready to see him cry again this year at LES North as BYU gets their 3rd win in row over the boys with the sparkley red helmets.

Yes the number 3 will be very significant for both BYU and the yoots this year. It will be win #3 in a row for BYU over the yoots; 3rd time's the charm and BYU goes to a BCS bowl (snubbed in 1996 and 2001); and once again the yoots finish 3rd in the MWC.
LocoLobo | 9:32 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
I watched 4 MWC teams play in week 1 and only 2 of them were impressive. Utah and TCU are going to be 1 & 2 in the conference and if/when TCU beats OU we will all know which team is the real deal in the conference. However, if my Lobos can get back on track we might have a shot of sneaking up on some of you.
Nothing | 10:21 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
Utah's win over UM ranks just above their Fiesta Bowl win. Another win over a so-so team with big legacy. UM may get their act together but going back to last year, is not that great.

To calibrate, we should pair Utah vs. Appalachian State.
Hey Texas Ute | 10:51 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
Yes and you will be forever reminded that Zoobie QB beat beloved team with 3 second left in the game on your turf. Oh yes and he through it to a WIDE OPEN TE. Utes suck and you know it. Stop dreaming of some urban legend of a football team.
Seattle | 10:52 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
I am getting tired of this "undefeated" talk and supposed count down to a BYU Utah face off. They both will not go undefeated up to that game and maybe it is best if it happens soon so we dont have to put up with this hype week after week.

UCLA with Norm Chow running the offense and Coach Walker running their defense just beat Tennesee. I see a coaching victory for UCLA at BYU.

By the way, is Hall suffering from a concussion? Of course BYU wouldnt say if he was because they would encourge him to toughen it out for the good of the team. A few more blind side hits and he may be taking the season off or lose his memory of the last couple of years.
hahaha ute fans | 10:54 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
Utah beats the worst michigan team in the last decade .....maybe ever and suddenly the smack talk comes flying....please remember that the team you beat lost to a DIV: 1AA team last year....in the big house! michigan is not that good. it was a good win for the MWC but settle down boys you still have UNLV to worry about.

Hey ute in philadelphia, I don't see anyone putting their names on their posts, including you. That was a brilliant observation. You think that up all by yourself?
give me a break "nothing" | 11:25 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008
I'm glad the Utes beat Michigan because it helps the MWC, but I'm so sick of hearing that this win is the greatest road win of all time for the Utes! Michigan is a great program historically, but they are not a good football team now. They'll probably finish the season not even ranked, so why so much hype. Plus, how can you say that this win is greater than a BCS bowl game win in the Fiesta Bowl? Makes no sense to me. This will all come crashing down when Utah does what they normally do, get overconfident and get waxed by the likes of Air Force or New Mexico.

i dream of jeanie. and byu going defeated and giving the utes their only loss on the season. hot hot hot

Re: Get Real

"Predicting gets old and it's never right. You are no exception."

Sorry, GET REAL, but your statement is wrong! The year Utah when to the Fiesta Bowl and ended the season undefeated many sports writers were predicting exactly what happened ... an undefeated regular season and a great shot at a BCS game.

Mike Sorenson's article is neither stupid nor an impossibility. Both Utah and BYU could make it to their November match game undefeated. Will it happen?

Beats me ... but I never say never. ;o)
Here in Florida | 3:47 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Even people here in Florida are talking about the two teams in Utah that are defeating the system year in and year out. Nation wide if both teams go undefeated even with one loss both teams could go to the bcs!
Brett | 6:10 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Not a Ute fan, but their win looks good for the conference and will give our state a little recognition when it comes to football.
Skeptic | 7:14 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
BYU still has a long ways to go before they deserve talk of an unbeaten season. There were some shining moments against NI, but there were lots of dull ones as well. How will the defense do against BCS teams and good Mtn. West teams? That remains to be seen.
geezer | 7:22 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
RE: Tex Ute

Sorry, John Beck is in the pros now. (no more tears) Good loyalty shown towards Brian Johnson though. The way you go on it sounds like Michigan manhandled the Utes.
Zoobie 56 | 7:31 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
BYU's football field is in embarrasing shape. Does anybody no what's up with that? Are we in the midst of a groundskeepers strike? Turf was flying on every down. I've never seen a BYU football field in worse shape. I know new turf will be installed next season, but there's no excuse for our team to have to play on a field like this. Both sides of the field are actually brownish. It doesn't look like it's even been watered properly. What's going on???
Fully Invested | 8:34 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Zoobie, Todd Munger; BYU's grounds keeper took a job with Lehi City this spring. He was good. Don't know who the new guy is, but sounds like maybe there is a bit of a learning curve.
HaHaHa | 9:04 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Of course it is premature to say Utah will go undefeated with UNLV on the schedule!
CrimsonUte | 1:16 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Oh, shutup about UNLV. Does anyone actually think Utah is going to look past the Rebels this year, after last year's debacle? Utah will win convincingly for the same reason the Utes' trip to Laramie will be a nightmare: teams don't forget embarassing shutouts.
geezer | 3:21 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
RE: Crimson Ute

I agree. I don't think UNLV will come within 21 points of the Utes and it will probably be worse. Can you believe someone thinks Weber State can beat your Utes? Wishful thinking if I've ever heard it. (but they killed mighty Western Montana) Congrats on a great win at Michigan. I'm not sold on Wyoming yet, but they will be up for both Utah and BYU. TCU may surprise everyone.

Thanks to all of the Couger fans of all ages who have made my night! I admit it is a bit immature, but I WAS HOPING TO RILE A FEW OF YOU UP. I love this time of year. I have many good friends who are cougars, and you are all wound up so tight!!! I am sorry but I can't get enough.

I love it, thank you for a wonderful rivalry. You guys are just too much fun!!!!
