found mention of a fire in passing in the article..."took crews a few hours to completely open all lanes of traffic after they moved the burned SUV, the semitrailer and its containers and patched the damaged road, Roden said."
why did it burn?

Not 5th East AF | 1:01 p.m. Sept. 5, 2008
It's not either the Pleasant Grove overpass or the 5th East AF overpass, both of which have the on/off ramps. It's the overpass between those two exits. It crosses I-15 between the Land Rover dealer on the west side and the Trailer dealer on the east side.

This bridge does not have an on-off ramp either direction. It is only an overpass for locals to get from one side of the freeway to the other side.
It has been a problem for overheight load from the time it was built! UDOT should have fixed it years ago!
The SUV caught fire after the accident. Apparently the passengers in the SUV were not seriously hurt.

The SUV was hit by one of the loose tanks which then caught on fire. The demo of the bridge shouldn't effect the 5th east exit (besides construction congestion). The bridge closure shouldn't cause too many traffic problems because there is an exit on both sides of the bridge very near by.

I don't think it is the 500 East exit/bridge that was hit. As I recall, the Sam White bridge is the overpass just south of the 500 East interchange. The Sam white bridge is not an interchange with on/off ramps.

The article makes it sound like the 500 East bridge is closed. I believe it's the next overcrossing south of 500 East, which doesn't have ramps.

From what I heard, when it first happened, a car couldn't stop in time and ran into the barrel. The entire car cot on fire, but the driver was able to get out.

The commenters did more reporting than the reporter. They're cheaper too!

UDOT, should not just tear down the overpass and not rebuild for 2 years!!!!!!!!!!!This does have on and off ramps. UDOT needs to provide access to the businesses and property owners on that side of the freeway! This is a main access to the South Lehi area plus Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mt. All that traffic will be thrown back on Lehi Main Street. WOW, what a mess!!!!! This will be an even bigger mess with this overpass access tore out. I feel UDOT is looking for an excuse to tear it out. Repair the brigde until you have another bridge built that as I understand cuts through the now Harts gas station. Udot needs to keep traffic flow going until the new overpass and roads are built to carry traffic to the west side. I own a business on Main Strret west side. To bad for me is all Udot can say! Udot needs toNOT wait 2 years to START a solution. WE need a solution now! After all we can't find another way accross Utah Lake and Lehi Main Strret can't handle the traffic!
RE: Property Owner | 4:53 a.m. Sept. 6, 2008
This bridge is not even close to Main Street in Lehi. This is NOT "a main access to the South Lehi area plus Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mt." Get a clue!

I was there and the enormous tanks on the freeway was one of the most impressive sights I've seen in a long time. Actually drivers need to know how high their loads are and the height of the bridges on their route.

I was behind a flat bed that had a back hoe on it. The "boom" hit the bridge. Man, if I had been following too close, I'd be a smudge...that back hoe came off of that trailer in less than a second. Why don't they regrade the road...make it a foot or two lower?
