Vouchers are bad policy | 1:32 a.m. Sept. 6, 2008
We need to make sure that GI Bill funds cannot be used at private universities like BYU. Utahns voted overwhelmingly against taxpayer subsides (vouchers) for private K-12 schools. To allow GI Bill money to be used for students at private universities would be a slap in the face to Utahns who reject such schemes.

While we're at it, we need to prohibit Pell Grants, which are also vouchers, from being used by students at private universities.

When Pell Grants and GI Bill funds are used at private universities, they drain funds from public universities. And don't say that students attending private universities with taxpayer subsidies "save" taxpayer dollars because public university costs are fixed. We don't save any tax dollars when one student transfers to a private university.

We need to properly fund public universities.

Private universities don't have accountability.

Public universities have to take all students. Private universities get to pick which students they want.

Public universities are the cornerstone of our democracy.

Maybe the Utah educational system (IE University of Utah) should consider not forcing a vet like myself to retake half of his undergraduate classes just to qualify for graduate school. Let's tur the Utah eduactions system into an eduactiona system and move it away from being the money maker system that it currently has become. Our vets bounce from base to base all around the world quite often to the detriment of thier education. It's difficult to finish school when you are taking one or two classes at a time and move about every two years or so. To those who will critque my spelling, please let it go.

The problem is greedy professors and presidents and their fat bank accounts. We need a 'windfall' tax on them.

University Waste | 11:31 a.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Yea, The U of U needs millions for its new boondoggle remaking the parking lot at Rice Eccles Stadium.

Easy access to federal financing of loans, grants and etc has lead the public universities to ramp up fees, tuition, special projects and waste till the cost has become astronomical.

The U of U obviously has too many money-pits to dump million$ into as it is.

You are worng..

Public universities are one of the cornerstone of the approaching demise of our economy.

The sarcasm of the previous comment was obvious especially given Mr. Gale's clear support of using the GI bill at private schools. I'm simply glad to welcome Mr. Gale to the pro-voucher camp. After all GI bills and Pell grants are simply vouchers issued by the Federal government.

The post second world war GI Bill harkens back to a time when we believed in ourselves, we believed in our government as a force of change for the better, and we did not let politics divide us. With this sort of unity and effort we helped rebuild a devastated Europe and created a middle class and prosperity at home.
Now none of this is possible, and I fear that a great disaster or hardship, far worse than 9/11, will have to fall on us before we are ever united again. It's sad.
We Need a new GI bill? | 6:00 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I thought a new GI bill was just passed. Any GI who has served in a combat zone since 9-11 will get 4 years of college, all expenses paid. This passed just a few weeks ago. Bush and McCain was against it, but congress passed it anyway and somehow it got through.

I agree, the GI's who have put their lives and well being at risk, while we at home have been living the good life should get rewarded in a way that will benefit them and their families.

As I have said before, the men and women in the military are my heros. I agree that they should receive an educational benifit. They should also qualify for better home loans than they are presently getting. I believe that ALL EMPLOYERS should give preference to qualified VETs.

The bottom line here is none of us could enjoy the freedoms we have without the men and women in the military. Without them, our Nation could not stand. Each of these people have knowingly placed themselves in harms way. I know some have not seen combat, but each stands a chance of being sent to an active war zone at any time. They chose to do this for us. We owe them.

I did not serve in the military, I chose to serve 21 years in law enforcement instead. Although what I did was a service to our Nation, I can not compare myself with the men and women who serve in the military. They are my heros. If only, our Nation as a whole, would treat them as such.
