We know the real Buttars | 2:46 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
Poll not surprising to us who know Senator Buttars. Only the press who wants to spice up their political coverage and those liberals who have opposed Buttars issues in the past want to stir the pot. Buttars is well known in our district, is respected, and liked by the majority. He has accomplished a lot of good and will prevail in this election.
Buttars | 2:53 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
I believe Buttars introduced the district split bill into the Senate. A lot of good that had done the people of the district, 30% higher property taxes. Yes, pair that with being a strong supporter of vouchers and he has some real accomplishments to hang his hat on

And supported the soccer stadium! Go Chris! You are doing so much good.

Come on folks! Another term for Buttars???!!!!

I the democrats wanted Buttars seat, the missed it when his democrat opponent sponsored a saturdays voyer spoof on him and others. I am amazed the Cahoon got elected after that mistake.
Hey West Valley | 3:31 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
If you re-elect Buttars, you sure deserve what you get. Throw the bum out!!
Jay from Sandy | 3:44 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
I am saddened to realize that so many voters in West Jordan believe that Chris Buttars best represents their views. It does not speak very highly of them that they would choose just a hard-hearted, mean-spirited person as Mr. Buttars. Sad indeed.
Stewart | 3:57 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
You may not like Butters, but the democrats put up a candidate in Senate District 10 that is just unacceptable to votes. "Rendell has overwhelming support from Democrats," which is meaningless. I think they have sprayed for democrats the past few years, and there just aren't many democrats left in West Jordan, South Jordan and Herriman.
If you want to take out someone like Butters you need to do it at the Republican Convention or primary. The democratic political perspective is so far from that of the 10th District that is it doubtful that they could even find a viable candidate living there

Can't Believe It | 4:24 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
I agree with Jay from Sandy. ANYBODY would be better than Buttars. Some of the statements he's made are on the fringe of insanity. Why would West Jordanites want someone like that representing them?
Buttars serves a purpose | 4:28 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
Without Buttars representing West Jordan, we'd have no yardstick to measure the better ethics and morality of the rest of Utah.
BigH | 5:12 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
I'm opposed to Buttars, but not for the reason most people are opposed to him. He is a communist. I use the term very broadly and define a communist as someone who uses government to gain money or power from public office. Buttars has used his position to gain money for his business interests. I think most politicians of both parties are communists by my definition. I don't want a government that gives rich people the chance to steal my money to benefit themselves. Think of the Dave Checketts.
Roger | 5:13 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
No one can argue that Mr. Buttars doesn't have grit and tenancity. Faced with the pressure Senator Buttars has faced during the past year, a lesser man would have simply given up and gone home to hide.
Perhaps that is why his constituents want to renew his term. But regardless of the reason, whether he returns or not to the Senate is the concern of those who live in his district, and no one else.

Morality and Ethics of which I see none.
Utah is a State of closed ears, minds
Blind and Ignorant
Buttars is showing you what he thinks of Mormon's by being Re Elected by these Dummys
It just takes an R
in front of your name to win in Utah

You have got to be kidding me. I dare you to name one peace of legislation that he got passed this last term... cant do it I thought not. The only thing he accomplished was making February Obesity Awareness Month I don't know about you but I'm so much more aware of obesity. This man does not represent me at all. and I encourage every one in district ten to get out and take down this sorry excuse for a senator "Accomplished a lot of good". Wow you showed your intelligence with that comment or lack there of... congrats.

Third Party | 5:50 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
Why vote for the lessor of 2 evils when you can vote for a great third party candidate. Steve Maxfield in Senate District 10, and Wayne Crawford in House District 49! Mr. Maxfield is campaigning to bring Utah's institutional investors investments to Utah to create a local mortgage fund to provide Utah with its own local Fannie or Freddie-but properly operated. Wayne Crawford is campaigning with a detailed plan to make health care affordable to all! He has been developing this for 15 years, and is now ready to implement it.
Even if they served just 1 term, they would do more good for Utah than the status quo has done for quite awhile.

Voting for Greg C | 5:52 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
Best of luck to Greg Curtis! He has been an immensely effective legislator, and no, I don't always agree with him. If you had a chance to ever visit the session (it is open to the public) you would be very impressed with the way Greg runs the meetings as Speaker of the House. He is amazingly organized, fair and efficient. It is a tough job that he does very well.
I cannot imagine, living in his district, that I would vote for someone (nice as he may be) who will go to the hill with NO history, NO relationships, NO experience with regard to getting things done.
I feel so fortunate to have Greg Curtis represent me, and having the Speaker as your representative is an amazing opportunity. Greg always listens to my views and is very smart. It is true that he doesn't pander to people to make them feel good. He's pretty much "down to business" and takes his job seriously.
This kind of hurts him because people love to hate him - but he is a great legislator! Thanks Greg I'll be working for you!

Get Curtis OUT! | 6:55 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
I am sick of Greg Curtis and his ethic problems. Did Speaker Curtis need a referendum process to tell him that his district did not want a private school voucher system? Maybe he chooses to ignore the people in his district to get more out-of-state pro voucher money (he gets more than any other Utah politician)
It is time to elect someone with VALES. It is time to elect Jay Seegmiller.
I have been "so fortunate" to have Curtis represent me as well. I think he needs to stop being Sandy's politician and start being a true representative of Sandy.
Enough is enough!
Get him OUT

Go Buttars | 7:13 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
I'm glad we have someone like him there, it shows the real representation of West Jordan, be it racist or homophobic, or flat out ignorant. Buttars at this time may not be known for what he has achieved but for where he has messed up. His mistakes are what we the State see, therefore, that is how we see West Jordan. He is your representation!
Vote Seegmiller! | 7:45 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
We need more tax revenue!!! With Curtis, we'll just keep getting tax cuts.
Seegmiller will support tax increases if the UEA asks him to.

Yeah, Vote for Seegmiller | 7:55 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
He'll raise your taxes. Now there's a good idea!
Disbarred | 8:03 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
Curtis has got to go. Also, if the allegations with regard to his unethical behavior are true, the Utah Bar should look into whether or not he should be able to practice law. He seems to give lawyers a bad name.
vales? | 8:51 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
Oh yes, there is nothing like a candidate with good "Vales"...whatever those are.
Disgusted WJ Resident | 9:54 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
I am a West Jordan resident. When I talk to my neighbors they are say they are embarrassed to be represented by such an unethical and divisive individual. So then who is voting for Buttars and why?
His signs says he represents Utah values. Really, Chris? Is one of our values to speak in racist terms? Is it part of our values to enrich ourselves under the guise of being a state legislator?
And we wonder why the country and state are in such moral decay. How sad!

Curtis | 11:07 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
Curtis has a trail of dirt a mile long! This guy is in the courts for Ethics, all over the place. No more Curtis.

Needs to go, nuf said
Attorney from Sandy | 11:52 p.m. Sept. 22, 2008
Typical Seegmiller supporter claiming that Curtis should be disbarred. They really do not understand the legal or political system if they think any of the false smear tactics amount to something that could cause an attorney to be disbarred, primarily because even the false smears do not amount to anything unlawful.
Either that, or they really don't believe he could be disbarred and are just trying to smear him more.
They are either fools or liars. And only fools will fall for their tactics.
The reality is that Curtis is one of the hardest working legislators on the hill, and the only reason his races are so close is because he spends more time doing his job, and then some, than he does campaigning.
When combined with his effectiveness, he is a total package that Seegmiller will never match.
Especially when Seegmiller claims he is qualified on transportation issues because he is a conductor on Amtrack. Come on, what substance does he really offer. The more the people in our district get to know him, the more they will realize that Seegmiller really has nothing to offer.
He's nothing but a democratic puppet. Always has been, always will be.

Raise taxes??? | 12:16 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
Seegmiller would raise taxes? As a democrat in the super-minority? Really? He couldn't raise taxes even if he wanted to. Oh, and he doesn't want to. That comment was pure fear-mongering.
I'm a Republican who is sick of Curtis. Why should I worry about what a guy like Seegmiller can do in the legislature instead of what a guy like Curtis can do with unchecked power? That's what scares me. Vouchers, soccer, guzzelgate, Mark Walker, St. George airport, shoreline trail land sale for his buddy- the list goes on and on.
I am sure he's very effective at whatever it is he does. But what he does can't be called representing the will of those who elected him, like me. So I want him out.
And he's got a colorful vocabulary in meetings with those who dare question him- not your average Sunday School fare.
Anyway, give me the big "Republicans against Curtis" sign for my front yard. We need to put this guy out to pasture.

I can't believe the poll! Can South Jordan voters really be so blind as to ignore all the flaws Buttars brings to the table? Opposition to ethics reform. Intimidation in support of special interests. Adamant advocacy of vouchers. Do the people of South Jordan favor these positions?
John Rendell must campagin more assertively and tell the truth about Sen. Buttars record. Chris Buttars must be defeated. The people of South Jordan deserve better representation. Come on Utah, wake up!

Come on | 12:37 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
Most of Senator Buttars constituents realize that the media smear wasn't about racism. It was about the fact that he wouldn't bow down to the homosexual agenda, which is to get the public to believe that something immoral is moral and a constitutional right. The media smear against Senator Buttars might have worked in San Francisco, but it won't work here.
Dear Attorney from Sandy- | 12:45 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
Seegmiller is no more a puppet of the Democratic party than Curtis is a puupet of the Republican party. Just state the facts and stop with the name calling. Your logic was beginning to make sense until then.
Digbads | 1:26 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
Senator Curtis's strongarm techniques to coerce votes and compliance from Republicans has stolen our party from us. If my fellow Republicans want a party that represents them, that listens to them, then help get rid of Senator Curtis.
David O | 2:48 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
Buttars comment was racist, the only people who don't know it are fellow racists.

John | 6:29 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
Sen. Buttars has been a target for all the liberals because he is a solid conservative on the issues. The biased media cannot print his name without adding an out of contect remark that they repeat trying to tar him as a racist.
Buttars is a good, decent, honorable man, and a good legislator.
Curtis, on the other hand is an arrogant RINO, and even a Democrat would be no worse. Bye, bye Greggie.

One West Jordanite that won't be voting for Buttars but it doesn't appear we have any democrats in Utah with any guts - but Buttars still won't get my vote as he sure doesn't represent my values in no way
Bear Laker | 7:04 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
Most of you don't know Buttars personally. You know him only from what the press tells you. You are the uninformed. Until you are informed don't judge me by your prejudice.
Go Chris | 8:02 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
Let's get him back in there so he can finally clean up the legislative ethics rules. You need a lot of time in the legislature to get things done. It's not easy and not something left to fringe Democrats. Go Chris! Show us the light.
To "Come On" | 8:17 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
Some of you are saying that Buttars won't bow down to the "homosexual agenda". There is a difference between not agreeing with someone's lifestyle and spreading hate and misinformation like Buttars does. There is a line between disagreement and blinded hatred and meanness. There lies the difference between an exremist and a conservative.
BUTTERS!! | 8:33 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
Wow, only in Utah could this guy be an elected official and continue to be re-elected. The media hasn't done anything wrong by simply publishing what he says. They don't slant, it they don't spin it. They simply replay what he has said time and again. Once, you could buy that he was out of context, but how many times have whe heard Butters say something inappropriate?
Nice job, keep electing biggots with blinders. Maybe Super Dell is next

In speaking about independants the article said Curtis is "absolutely trying to reach out to those voters — emphasizing issues that may not be traditional Republican (campaigning) issues". He appears to only reach out with words at election time. As a registered republican from his district I cannot find it in me to support him. He has not, in my opinion, represented his district. He works, in my opinion, for his own gain and not the general citizen. It is time for a change. As I have said for some years now -- anyone but Curtis.
Buttars Fan | 8:57 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
I am a registered Republican in District 10 who listens to NPR (National Public Radio) and voted Democrat last election for the House seat. I like to think I vote for the individual above the party.
I have voted twice for Senator Buttars and have already decided I will vote for him again in this election for several reasons: 1) He is a strong advocate for personal gun rights; 2) He defends marriage between a man and a woman, which I believe is the fundamental unit of society; 3) He is a school choice proponent, which is important to me, since I have a special-needs child who does not thrive in the public schools (by the way, I also have three other children who are doing great in public schools); 4) He has voted for raises for police and teachers (and, frankly, who deserves it more?); and 5) He sponsored DORA, a fantastic program.
Ironically, the thing that I admire most about Senator Buttars is the same thing that inspires such rabid hatred in other people: He doesn't bow to special interest groups and doesn't cater to the vocal minority.

Nice to know that the Constitution Party has a candidate in each of those races. After learning last night that Ron Paul has endorsed the Chuck Baldwin, the Constitution Party Candidate for president, both Baldwin and Crawford will get my vote. Until I read the letters to the editor, I did not realize that I had a third choice.

Voter, District 10 | 9:59 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
Some interesting facts about Senator Buttars: As a young couple, he and his wife sponsored several Native American students, who lived in the Buttars home for free while they attended school. (Doesn't sound like a bigot to me!)
Also, after his unfortunate comment on the Senate floor, Senator Buttars accepted an invitation to stand before the largest African American Christian congregation in Utah (about 500 individuals). He brought his wife and some of his children and grandchildren (no media) and explained his horror at the way his words were misinterpreted.
I have a friend in the congregation, who used to make fun of Senator Buttars because he disagreed with the Senator's position on marriage. However, when the pastor asked the congregation to vote on whether they felt they could forgive Senator Buttars, even my friend raised his hand. He said he was impressed with the Senator's courage and honesty.
I don't for a minute believe the spin put on Senator Buttar's comments by the media. It seems to me that if this congregation could accept his comment as an unfortunate choice of words and move on, so should we.

To the Buttars Bashers | 10:00 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
To all you Buttars Bashers out there. It is so sad to hear you make the uneducated, hateful comments you make. The press is famous for taking a few words out of the middle of a sentence and twisting it, then make you believe the person said something different than was intended. You are all a bunch of mindless sheep who fall in line behind what ever a National Inquirer type of reported wants to print to get his readership up.
Why don't you learn a little about the guy -- outside of the misinformation the media reports -- before you spew forth your hate? The residents of his district can see beyond the hate speech, which is why he is being re-elected. In fact, they are rallying around him to vote against the way the media is treating him. If the media wants him out, they should quit wrongfully attacking him -- they'd get farther.

Teaching our kids | 11:14 a.m. Sept. 23, 2008
I don't know Butters personally, but I recall that Butters tried to pass a bill that would allow intelligent design (creationism) into our public high school classroom. This idea has been tried and judged as unconstitutional, and is not science, and therefore has no place in a science classroom. The fact that he would sponsor legislation like this, I think is a good example of something that would make me question the candidate. Just a thought from an observer.

Couldn't agree with you more. Most Rs I know in House 49 will be voting for Seegmiller based on the very same reasons you stated. May be different in West Jordan, but, as for Sandy . . . we've had enough.

You people in district 10 need to realize that even if stuff does get miss interpreted by the media or out of context or what every excuse you are using for Chris's bigotry. When ever the man speaks in public he is speaking for you. Misinterpreted or not if it looks like a duck acts like a duck and talks like a duck it's probably a duck.
District ten if you look like you are nothing more than close minded rednecks who ran into some money. And support a man who supports homophobia legislation and refers to the NAACP as "those people". Well in November you might prove that you are a Duck.
