Just another line item on Bronco's resume for being a classy guy. Other coaches might say that BYU has moved up to a new level and Utah State offers nothing but a chance to get knocked out of the top twenty. It's a game that the Cougs can't win no matter what the score. It offers much more to Utah State than BYU gets.

go cougs.

Great job Cougars. Keep focused for this Friday, no let downs. Hope they can continue holding opponents to 0 score. Can't wait until the naysayers and negative comments start flooding in.

As a Ute fan it is great to see both BYU and Utah getting some great national attention. BYU is definitly having an impressive year and deserves to be in the top 10. Hats off to BYU's coaches and players for turning things around in the last 4 years. Let's just hope that both teams can go into the final game of the season undefeated.
GO UTES!

If BYU expects to improve their program they have to improve their schedule and the first step is eliminating Utah State. It is not a rivalry. Play them once every 4 years or whatever like Utah does, or use them as a patsy tune-up the first game of the season (instead of Northern Iowa). Sorry Aggie fans - that's reality. Get a better team on the field and I'll change my opinion.
wow | 6:34 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Look, I'm a Cougar fan, but lets try to keep it real. Are we really better than USC, Florida or some of the others we are ranked higher than? Did we win our way into the top ten or did we get here by way of a bunch of others losing? My biggest fear is that we go undefeated, get into the championship game and get exposed just like Hawaii last year. That would be an embarassment to us and the MWC.
Realism | 6:57 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Let's be real. BYU has not played anyone to earn this ranking. UW is winless, UCLA has one win. Every team in the SEC would beat BYU. All this ranking does is create a false sense for everyone including the arrogant BYU fans that forget that the win at UW was the first win on the road against a BCS school during the regular season since the 1990s. The ranking means nothing, BYU would get smoked easily by the top 20 teams they are ranked ahead of.
OH Boy | 6:58 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
We will never hear the end of it now. It's all but a National Campionship for Provo. Oh wait, the BCS will never allow that.
Easy to see | 6:58 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
It is easy to see who the nation's voters think is "the football program" in the MWC. BYU and Utah both undefeated, but BYU is ranked in the top 10, Utah not. The only reason Utah gets any pub at all is when the article mentions BYU and then Utah gets an also ran. I understand why Utah fans feel so inferior, but reality and facts are often hard to accept. Pity the poor yewties.
USC would Destroy BYU | 7:01 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Can you imagine what USC would do to BYU. To think this ranking translates to reality is consistent the mirage in happy valley. I would spot BYU 3 touchdowns and bet $1,000,000 that USC would beat them.
GO GO GO | 7:05 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
The trophy is coming back to Provo. We are in the best position to win it all. Easy schedule and we will be the only team without a lose going into the bowls. If we don't play for the Gold, something is very very wrong.
Get real!!! | 7:08 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Do you think BYU could beat USC, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State? (schools they are ranked higher than) What are you smoking if you do??

Would you have made the same bet on Oregon State?

AND....out come the haters.
They make me yawn...
Go Cougars!
(p.s. No one could say BYU would lose to any of those teams. There's no way to know. BYU could play with and beat any of those teams, yes. And please don't state the Washington close game as an example. BYU could wipe the floor with Oregon State, yet they beat USC. BYU would beat Ole Miss, but they beat Florida. Etc. etc. etc.)
Again.....YAWN........

BYU would kill USC or any other team from the SEC, Big 10 and Big 12. It's just too bad BYU will never play them because we don't have a PLAY OFF SYSTEM!
So in the mean time let's just keep arguing about something we'll never settle, but sells news papers and drives internet traffic.

BYU is doing well, unfortunately they have played teams that would have trouble beating the Manti High team. They will end up behind TCU, Utah, and AFA by the end of the season. Sorry Zoobies, but just because you think the Coogs are a championship team, doesn't mean they are going to win any big games. Get ready for a reality check and a lot of hugging and crying at FHE.

Not smoking a thing... but I do believe that BYU could compete with most of the top tier teams.
Do I think they beat OU or 'Bama... no. Do I think that they keep the spread less than 10? Yes.
Can they beat Ohio State... yes.
Can they beat Florida, USC or Georgia? Yes, but those are all toss up games.
I would say the same of the Utes this year as well. It will be a great BYU-Utah game this year... hopefully both teams win out so that a BCS bid is on the line. Then we will know if either of these teams is really at that level.

What I don't get, as a big cougar fan, is why Utah is still getting the short schrift from the media. They are undefeated as well. Their opposition, as far as I can tell is no less respectable as Troy or CIF or the other rollovers played by BCS conference second tier teams.
Don't get me wrong, I love seeing BYU rated highly, but shouldn't Utah be right there with them, and don't give me the longer tradition bit. Utah's recent national showings have been on par with the Coug's. Go BLUe, but Go RED as well.

Why is it when BYU starts winning, our fans have to start spewing anti-Utah propoganda from their mouths. Be happy for our team. Why do you even care what Utah does, or where they are ranked? I am a BYU fan, and fans like you embarrass me and the program. Pride Cometh Before The Fall. We should be happy there are two ranked Mountain West Teams. It helps our program whether you want to believe it or not.

Playoffs | 7:37 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Sorry but I have to call it like I see it. Stupid comments about do you think BYU could beat USC ........ I really don't care what people think. Let's play the games. Talk to USC about who they should have beat last week. Everyone picked them to win.. but wait oh they lost... Hmm I guess that is why you play the game. I get sick and tired of people saying that, a team can never beat another team. Hmm maybee that is why they are called upsets. Let's get to a playoff. if BYU wins Excellent if not back to the drawing board. nough said...

I don't know which of those teams, if any, BYU would beat, but it would sure be nice to have the chance to try. I think that is all the fans are asking for.

To: Realism, Get Real, and all the other "experts:"
You don't have ANY idea what would happen if BYU played any of the teams you have mentioned. YOU HAVE NO IDEA, WHATSOEVER! All you "experts" out there have probably never even played football let alone coached it. My nephew, who actually IS a college football coach, tells me that he can't believe how many "experts" out there think they know more than he does about football.
BYU has not just had wins. Most have been TOTAL BLOWOUTS. BYU didn't just beat UCLA. They ran over them like they were a high school team. Their one close win was a road game in a VERY HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT.
One of the big problems with the present system is that it's all pretty much illusory. These teams will never play each other and so WE WILL NEVER REALLY KNOW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN. However, the REAL EXPERTS out there think BYU should be ranked 7th or 8th in the nation. That should be good enough for everyone!

Those who think BYU cannot beat USC, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, please prove that BYU cannot beat them first. I am not saying BYU will beat them, but, no one know what the result will be. Just because you think BYU cannot beat them doesn't mean they will beat BYU. If that is what people believe, why don't they just hand the National Championship to those "elite" schools, like USC, every year. But wait, USC just got beat by non-ranked OSU, oh no....
To: Get real!!!! | 7:48 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
USC is not that good. Georgia just got beat bad. Ohio State is horrible at best. Florida would be a toss-up. There is not a team out there that can stop our offense. No one scores on our defense. So you GET REAL
What a joke | 7:49 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Some of you just can't get over BYU's ranking. You have to keep spouting this BYU couldn't beat USC, Georgia, Florida garbage. First of all, yes BYU could beat them on any given Saturday. Could we also get beat by them? Of course. You would have been just as sure that Oregon State could never beat USC but guess what? The polls are about an entire body of work that includes more than one week of history. BYU's current lofty ranking is partially due to their success over the past two seasons. They began the season ranked high due to the past season and that has allowed them to climb faster than the Utes for example who started lower. Anything can happen on any Saturday to anyone. But is all BYU can do is play who is put in front of them. 103-0 over the past two games show they are doing that pretty well right now. Some of you will be just as negative toward BYU on this board if they go to a BCS game and win by 20. You'll still have some negative comment.

Apparently USC came to Corvallis thinking the game was a piece of cake, being ranked #1 nationally against a team who already had two losses and to assume USC would wipe BYU into the ground seems to stretch credibility a whole bunch. [UCLA only lost 59-0].
goals for the cougs | 7:49 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
The goal of this game should be a third straight shutout. A weak team that is considered by some to be the worst in Division I, will not help boost the cougs in the eyes of voters. A third straight shutout would.
Not a coug fan, but BYU could beat USC, Florida, and especially Ohio State and Georgia. The cougs would be slightly outmatched against USC and Florida, but should have the advantage against Ohio State and Georgia. Not saying they WOULD win, but that they COULD win with a decent probability of around 50/50. No one has proven they can beat the cougs, so these arguments are always premature, but if they do go undefeated, they will have the chance to prove ON THE FIELD, that they can play with the big boys.

Easy to see,
I hope not all BYU fans are this disrespectful! Just so you know the facts are that the Utes have won 13 of their last 14 games. Both teams are doing well and deserve some publicity. I admit that BYU seems to be playing better than the Utes right now. Please do not let some success go to your head! I wish success upon both programs!
Thanks!

BYU can do it! One at a time baby I'm enjoyin' the ride.
Why not? | 7:53 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Yes, I really do think BYU could beat USC, Florida, Georgia, or Ohio St. With college football it's any given Saturday any team can beat anybody as witnessed this week with several huge upsets. It's all about confidence and coaching, not about historic programs and their top-recruits. I just hope BYU can focus one week at a time to win out and then beats a respected team in a BCS bowl game. There is no reason BYU can't be a National Title contender every year. With Bronco leading the way it could happen. Only time will prove me wrong.
Reality Bites | 7:54 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
103-0 and 14-0. You play who you are scheduled to play several years in advance. BYU has simply beaten the last 14 teams it has played and is doing it pretty convincingly of late.
Hats off to the Utes. I hope they really take it to Oregon State. And I hope BYU keeps it's shutout streak alive. A 21-0 win may look more impressive than a 55-21 win would.
This is a magical season so far for Utah and BYU fans. I feel sorry for those losers who can't get out of their eternal negativity and just enjoy this ride.

re: wow | 7:54 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
I am a BIG Cougar fan too, have been since the late 70's, and I have to agree with wow and others who think this is a hollow ranking. BYU did not earn it, at least not this season. Really, they are just riding the coat tails of their last two seasons and getting ranked high in the pre-season polls this year. Lets be realistic fellow Cougar fans. Washington, UCLA and Utah State have so far have a combined record of 2-10, not very impressive. And Wyoming looked totally inept at home against Bowling Green. All the MWC teams, except Utah and New Mexico, lost out of conference games this weekend, losing a lot of the credibility the conference had gained in previous weeks. So now it looks like the only chances BYU is going to get to beat quality opponents are TCU and Utah. If that is all it takes to get into the BCS than it only shows hot utterly ridiculous the whole BCS system is.

Do you think Oregon St. could beat USC? Of course not. No way Oregon St. could beat USC. I would spot Oregon St. 3 touchdowns and bet a $1,000,000 that USC would beat them.... and then I would be bankrupt.
Realist | 7:58 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Do you think Oregon State could beat USC? What about Ole Miss beating Florida? Honestly, if you've seen BYU play, they are as good as they're ranked. I think they would have a chance against any team they would face in the country. USC is over rated. Florida is good, but they're not as good as they were last year. Ohio State is going to probably finish third in the Big Ten. Georgia . . . they could probably beat BYU, but it would be close. But who knows what will happen. That's why they play the games.
Larry | 7:59 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Apparently USC came into Corvallis, being ranked #1 nationally, against a team that had aleady lost 2 games was a piece of cake and a lot of their fans didn't even bother to come to their game. So to assume that USC would wipe BYU into the ground seems like quite a stretch, n'est pas? UCLA only lost 59-0.
Re: USC would Destroy BYU | 7:59 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
Anybody who believes that a team that lost to winless Oregon State on the road 27-21 could beat BYU by 3 touchdowns and bet $1,000,000 on it sounds like the kind of person who ran Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae. I'll make you a deal if USC beats UCLA by 80 points (59 + 21) then I will officially apologize to you and admit you must have been right. In any event keep on posting these funny statements. They are very entertaining.
P.S. I heard these same kind of comments right before BYU beat #1 Miami 28-21. Not to mention beating Kansas State in the Cotton Bowl or Oklahoma in the Copper Bowl. And my favorite was the 31-3 pasting of BCS Power Washington right after those two teams finished 1-2 the year before.

Hey USC fans. Bad timing boys and girls. Your team looked awful against Oregon State. "Can you imagine what USC would do to BYU?" They'd probably lose. They'd definitely lose if they played like they did last Thursday.

If Ole Miss can beat Florida (in the Swamp!) and Oregon State can beat USC, then yes, BYU can beat them too. That's what's so great about college football - there are no guarantees.
Cal Coug | 8:04 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
to USC would destroy BYU: Nice comment, hater! USC can't even beat lowly OSU! The Cougs are for real this year, and it is fun to see you wallow in your hate. The hilarious part is your delusional bet of $1,000,000, which you clearly don't have. I doubt USC will beat UCLA by 59 points. But, though the little dogs bark, the caravan moves on! Go Cougs!
Anonymous | 8:08 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
BYU is definitely in the mix with the best teams in the country, both in terms of talent and coaching. Funny thing is "talent" is not all there is to football. Witness USC - Or. St., FL - Ole Miss, or any of dozens of others in recent memory.
BYU is playing with that "chemistry" that makes winning possible.
If games were played on paper, USC, tOSU, FL would be untouchable. But games are played on the field. That is why they are worth watching.
GO COUGS - '84 can be repeated!!!

Aren't they both in MWC? | 8:09 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
BYU and Utah fans that belittle each other remind me of two acquaintences from Wyoming that give each other a bad time because one is from Casper and the other is from Cheyenne. The two football programs don't need fans harping on each other; they're both from the Mountain West. Time and energy wasted on trash-talking each other would be better spent hoping that at least someone breaks into the BCS (bigoted currency stashers) and receive some of the payout that creates the disparity that some comments have inferred between teams and conferences. Average MWC athletic budget = $32 million. Average Big 10 football budget = $29 million. Go after them good ol' boys and crash their party. Oh, and a BCS buster from BYU or Utah will fair much better than the sham that was Hawaii.
Re: Chicago Cougar | 8:13 a.m. Sept. 29, 2008
I like both BYU and Utah but both are over-rated. Neither has beaten a good team yet.
The comment that BYU would "kill" USC is ridiculous. BYU nearly lost to 0-4 Washington were it not for a questionable call.
Great for both teams to be ranked, but let's be serious. Why aren't both the Y and the U serious about getting better opponents on their non-conference schedule? Northern Iowa? Weber State? It's embarrassing.
