USU. You can't do it!

Good win against the Vandals two weeks ago. San Diego St got thier first win of the year against them Saturday too. The Idaho Vandals are probably the worst team in the country! Good luck against the #7 team in the country!!

C'mon Aggies, don't listen to these Y-tards that post on here. If you believe you can do anything. Which byu fan thought up the title for this story? Why not have a story titled "Y fans are out of touch with reality by believing they can win National Championship"? A little long, but effective I think.
Go Aggies! | 7:23 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
I think we have a shot. BYU is a good team, but every team is beatable on any given day. Lets hope they are over looking us, and thinking about their rankings too much. Go Aggies!
Money Makers | 7:23 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
Can't blame Utah State for wanting to make a little extra money on one of the few games in recent years that fans really want to see.

This game will demonstrate just how passionate BYU fans are about their team, and how many passionate BYU fans there are. (Take a note Utah fans, Why wasn't your game with the Aggies a sellout?)

When was the last time Utah State had a sell out? I haven't researched it, but a good guess would be, the last time the Cougars visited Logan.

Unfortunately for Utah State, this series may die if their AD insists on home-and-home series instead of 2 for 1 or 3 for 2. Except for the old rivalry, and the friends the Aggies have within the BYU administration and alumni, playing the game in Logan makes no sense economically for BYU.

BYU averaged more fans per game at home last season than Utah State had for the entire season.
geezer | 7:48 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
I've posted this before, but I just want to warn Cougar fans attending the USU game. I bought tickets for the USU game in 1996. When my friend and I arrived at the game we discovered our tickets were in a first-come first-serve section and we had nowhere to sit down. We stood the whole game. No one told me I needed to come way early to have a seat when I bought the tickets. Coug fans may want to check this out and arrive very early for the game if attending.
cheeky aggies | 8:00 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
It's quite cheeky to double up on price, but one must remember that they are in fact still losing money. 2 games out of six they sell out, due to doubled price it's as if 4 games are sold out...however, 2 games are still empty. Sorry aggies, do you really want to know the secret of getting fans in?...WINNING
Anonymous | 8:03 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
geezer.. usually general admission means no reserved seating..
Be careful | 8:10 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
Idaho truly may be the worst team in the nation. Yeah, they clobbered lower division Idaho State, but then got clobbered by USU. USU lost to a traditional MWC cellar dwellar. Idaho lost big to the current MWC cellar dwellar.

My point is USU better not feel too confident about that win over Idaho. Idaho is terrible. The last two teams couldn't even score on BYU with their 2nd and 3rd stringers in.

Aggie fans should hope they can score anything vs. BYU. I'm afraid a win is only for the fantasy land. BYU has no one to look ahead to next week. Enjoy the 1st quarter when the score is relatively close. I can't see Aggie fans full of hatred for BYU watch BYU crush them on their home turf. Many will leave by halftime...just the facts.

Remember, Wyoming also has a one-sided rivalry with BYU, and they scored 0 points.

With that said, best of luck USU. Hope you paid attention last weekend on how to upset big teams.
Bye week | 8:12 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
Oh, my!!! USU didnt get beat by the bye-week as many byu fans suggested last week. Thats 2 weeks undefeated.
Well, hope the progress that was made against Idaho can be furthered by putting in a good showing against an overrated byu. beating the cougies wont be very easy but stranger things have happened. i will be at the game with my byu co-worker. i just hope i dont have to hear it all week after that.
go aggies!!!

Re: Money Maker
The aggies didn't insist on a 1 for 2 or 2 for 3 scenario when the Aggies dominated the Zoobies from 1900 to 1970s. Get over it. Try thinking of somebody besides yourself. There are plenty Aggie fans who want to see the game in Logan.
Anonymous | 8:26 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
yes, but it also generally means you have a place to sit
SJ Bobkins | 8:59 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
It's highly possible that BYU could have played Colorado, Kansas State, Arizona, or Texas Tech, in place of USU when those teams found themselves without 1 opponent for the 2008 season a year ago. The average payout is $600,000 to $800,000 for a road team to such places. BYU gave up $500,000 to $700,000 to play USU for what? To help fills the seats Aggie fans won't fill in leading USU to NCAA probation for not averaging the minimum 15,000 fans at home, ranking the Ags 117 or 119 teams. If the Aggie fans don't care why should BYU want to lose all this money to go to Logan? It makes no sense and it isn't about the Friday before conference, BYU has played a number of teams other that USU on that date. The support for a Div 1-A doesn't exist at USU, that's where a drop down can do great things such as cut costs and WIN games. Playing Idaho St, Weber St, with Utah, Wyoming, or Colorado State tossed in would be nice and affordable. GET REAL
If you think USU should stay at Div 1-A where's the support, ticket buyers coming from along with the athletes?
USUfan | 9:17 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
Remember byu needed a bye week just to prepare for us. They new the schedule ahead of time and took a week off before our game to PREPARE get it... they are not the team everybody thinks they are....its just byu......like the Utes say the team down south.

GO AGGIES !!!!
Re: SJ Bobkins | 9:31 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
Well the main reason that BYU didn't play Colorado or Kansas State on the road for $600,000 is that they aren't like the University of Utah who will go on the road without a return game, and teams are not going to be paying big bucks to bring in a team that is going to beat them, then have to come to Provo. That's a terrible post, and has no basis.
BYU / USU Rivalry | 9:33 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
In order to have a rivalry both teams need to be competitive. USU has a very good basketball program but their football program is terrible. Fans are partly to blame for this for not supporting their team. Average attendance at Romney Stadium is one of the worst in the nation, and that is the building block of a successful program. That is one of the biggest reasons BYU football is so successful. Even during the Crowton years when BYU was almost as bad as USU the home attendance still averaged over 50,000 which is probably what USU averages all season. If you want your program to improve start attending the games! Sure it may be painful to watch them lose for a few years, but they can only improve if their fans support them. Personally, I think USU would do better dropping to the FCS division and playing in the Big Sky conference where they could compete and have an instate rivalry with Weber State.
aggie | 9:47 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
Yeah right they could have played Colorado or Texas Tech. Given the choice between these teams or teams like Northern Iowa they will always choose the latter. Makes them look good. Both teams they beat in the PAC-10 are the bottom of the pack. Go for the big dawgs #8
USU Alum | 10:04 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
65-0 BYU. To state otherwise would be an insult to my education at USU.
FromMiami | 10:08 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
USUFan - it's called conference math. Since BYU doesn't want to have a game that conflicts with General conference. Taking a BYE week the last week of september, playing the next game on Friday of conference week and then playing the next Saturday gives them two long weeks instead of just one. It's pretty easy when you do the math
Aggies | 10:14 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
-Maybe BYU is following HI, who scheduled Puffs, it got them BCS!

-Maybe BYU would get more $$ playing other schools, but the USU/Utah travel is alot less $ and less impactfull for student studies esp on Fri/Thurs games?

-Hey, the KJAZZ allows me to stay home and watch for free, that is a big perk (BYU should only schedule Non-conf away games, we can go back to free football on TV?!)

Though I am a USU alum, I am still pulling for my Cougars, considered comming to Logan, but rather pay less and support my Cougars at a BYU home game sometime this year. Good luck (After this game) USU.

Go Cougars!
KellyH | 10:32 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
Anybody who is suggesting that USU drop to FCS or the Big Sky is really drinkin' the Kool-Aid and needs to consider the entire picture. Do you REALLY believe that the highly successful basketball program, which has been THE sport at USU for years, will give up the WAC affiliation and the possibility of a conference with multiple bids for the Big Sky, which will NEVER have multiple bids? Get real. If it were only about football, a drop to FCS would make sense, but USU punishing their basketball program (a sellout every game) for the sake of their beleaguered football team would have to be about the most insane suggestion possible.

So please, no more "USU should drop to FCS/Big Sky" comments. It's just stupid, and as long as Stew Morrill is around and the basketball team is winning, there is not even the most remote possibility in the universe that USU's AD would ever entertain that, no matter what the NCAA might do about the attendance issue.

Remember, the basketball program at USU dictates EVERYTHING the athletic department will do as far as conference affiliation, level of play, etc.
Sad state | 10:32 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
Amazing to me that the Utes can't draw any kind of fan base anywhere, even in their home stadium. Why do they not fill Rice Stadium even in down years? They deserve to keep playing teams like USU and Weber State since they can't pull fans either. Fans help make the team what they are, look at 'power' schools like Michigan, Notre Dame, that fill huge stadiums on a regular basis, even in down years. BYU has that going for it, 60k+ fans in bad years, usually a very flat attendance number from year to year, with very little fluctuation.
matt | 10:42 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
Come on Aggie fans, get behind your team in good times and bad. USU has struggled, but can win games. They upset Fresno State last year. The more support the better chance our team has of winning. Plus, it's just a fun atmosphere to be there. 3 hours of fun for $15.
aggie smack | 10:46 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
It's interesting that a "supposed" Aggie fan would be poking fun of BYU's schedule, when

Northern Iowa would beat Utah State, handily.

BYU's SOS took a big hit when they added the Aggies to their schedule, easily, THE WORST TEAM on BYU's schedule this year.

UCLA and Washington could just as easily have been Top 25 teams and PAC 10 contenders when BYU scheduled those games, who knew.

Besides, didn't UCLA almost beat WAC Top 25 team Fresno State just last week?

BYU's Top 10 ranking is a reward for their body of work the past 3 seasons. The voters obviously think BYU is a pretty good team that simply hasn't been tested, yet.

Air Force, TCU and Utah will eventually provide that test.

Aggie fans would be wise not to be seeking proof this week that BYU deserves their Top 10 ranking.
Re:USU fan | 10:51 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
BYU might not be the team everyone thinks they are, but the Aggies are. BYU could beat Utah St. with their second team and that's not talking trash, that is the truth.
Zoobie 56 | 10:51 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
I find it interesting that the attendance for the U game at Logan was around 15,000 and they will sell out the place for BYU. A few have given the Aggie fans a bad time for poor attendance. I don't think the attendance at BYU or Utah would be any better if their teams had the same winning percentage as USU football. Sometimes it may be healthier mentally just to stay away. USU is slowly improving. The Cougars may be overrated, but I'll be shocked if the Aggies are able to pull off a huge upset. p.s. Aggies- USU also had a bye week to prepare for this game.
Bleeding_Blue | 11:00 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
I think it it good for BYU and the state, in spite of potential lost revenue for BYU, to keep USU on the schedule. BYU obviously feels the same way, as they showed a few years ago when they let what was to have been a home game for BYU be played at USU so that USU could meet their attendance requirements for that year.

I also agree that BYU should not schedule away games with no return games in Provo. I don't even like the 1 for 2 trade, 2 games away, 1 in Provo. We can find quality opponents without resorting to that. And before all the haters start bagging on UCLA/Washington, keep in mind that games are scheduled typically years in advance. You never know if a team is going to be up or down when you finally get to the game. BYU played USC not too long ago, as I recall.
I've always liked Utah State... | 11:11 a.m. Sept. 30, 2008
...but I think they should drop down to I-AA (or FCS or whatever they're calling it these days) for football. They haven't been competitive for years. No shame in going to a lower division and actually being competitive, vs. being in a higher division and losing all the time.

Re: Geeks – “Try thinking of somebody besides yourself.” This isn’t a charity organization, it’s D-1 football. You want to help people, that’s what church is for. “There are plenty Aggie fans who want to see the game in Logan.” Yeah, they’re called closet “Y” fans. Delusions of grandeur cannot hide the fact that you guys can’t average 15K fans. You want to fill your stadium, let Logan High play there, at least people come to watch them.

Re: USUfan – We didn’t schedule a bye week to prepare for you. We thought it would be beneficial to have two weeks off before we get ready to make another conference run. Hey, here’s an idea, how about we send our JV squad, the Timpview Thunderbirds, to play in our stead. Another week to prepare for you guys, what a joke. We could’ve played you five minutes after the Wyoming game and still plastered your behinds.

My comment is: Who are you kidding? You know very well that games are scheduled years in advance. A bye week is the result of inability to schedule a game for that week. However, if it makes you feel better to think that BYU is trembling in their shoes at the thought of playing the mighty USU, go ahead. I'm predicting another shut-out for BYU. Actually, this game could drop BYU in the polls because of who they are playing. A shut-out might prevent that from happening.
Dave | 12:21 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
I cannot wait for the Aggies to burst the coogers bubble this Friday. There is nothing better to hear or see than the excuses and incredible whining that comes from cooger fans when they lose to a team they feel so superior to. GO AGGIES, and remember that it was called here on the D-News site by an active member!!! Prayers are answered, even if they don't come from zoobies, and I admit it would be a prayer, but it WILL HAPPEN!!! GO AGS!
Long Time Cougar | 12:36 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
I know what the general outcome of the game will be (somewhere along the lines of 50-7) but I don't want to rub the USU fan's noses in it. After all, they represent my state. I liked the days when USU was more competitive 10-20 years ago and I'd really like to see that again.

Remember that the stadium will fill when the team improves and that starts with recruiting and quality facilities. Unfortunately they have dug themselves into a hole which will be hard to dig out of.
Georgetown | 12:38 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
plays in the Big East Conference and is one of the top programs in the country, in basketball.

In football, Georgetown is a member of the The Patriot League, a Division I-AA (now called Football Championship Subdivision) football conference founded in 1986. Full League members include American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Associate members include Fordham (football) and Georgetown (football).

There's already a precedent for Utah State to follow. Wouldn't the Aggies be much better off, competitively speaking, joining the Big Sky Conference as an Associate member in football only. They'd have natural rivalries with Idaho State and Weber State. They'd be more competitive. Fans would have something to be excited about, for a change. AND, they would actually have a decent opportunity to play for a national championship, since the FCS actually has a playoff to determine their champion.
To: True Blue | 12:47 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
If believing was enough, the yewtes would have beaten BYU the last two years, but alas, it takes more, like talent, good coaching, players doing all the right things on and off the field. That's why only believing you can win isn't enough.
I Bleed Cougar Blue | 12:54 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
I like having the BYU/Utah State game. I think that it is a possitive thing for both schools. Having braging rights; having fun talking smack is what makes sports fun. Every team has the chance of losing. Every team wants to make a statment. I think it's fun to settle things on the field. I am glad that this game is available and it will be fun to be in attendance. Even this post is fun, to be able to read all the spirit that each fan has for it's team. Weather a sell out or not, it will be fun. GO COUGS!!!
tom_al | 12:56 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
DUDE, cougar dude! you are absolutely right! If BYU doesn't smoke USU this could be bad for their perfect season to come. But I am predicting a shut out. I went to USU and attended a game against Utah. This was the year Utah busted the BCS, and needless to say USU got killed! it was embarrassing to go to the school then... and this saturday will be no different. Bwa ha ha
Seriously? | 1:06 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
Gotta wonder about BYU fans who take Aggie fans' smack seriously. Surely, you can't be serious or believe that Utah State fans are actually serious.

Seriously, anything less than a 28-point margin would be a surprise, but it wouldn't be a bit surprising to see BYU shut out their 3rd straight opponent.

The biggest questions will be whether BYU fans will outnumber Utah State fans, and, at what point in the game will Bronco pull his starters.

I know, Aggie fans are thinking "on any given Saturday," unfortunately, for them, it won't be this Saturday (or Friday). This BYU team is just plain good, and getting better.

Good luck to the Aggies the rest of the season. I hope you win all of your remaining games.

Stay sharp Cougars, the Aggies are hoping to catch you reading your press clippings.
Sarah | 1:56 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
I really feal for the USU. they seem like such a nice team. BYU is going to trounse them. is their some kind of mersy rule in effect that says once a team goes up 45 to 0 the game just ends some how. its ok if it ends in the second quarter. i just hate to see the agies get blown out of the water. I really do think they are a bunch of nice guys.
USU Tickets R Overpriced!!! | 1:57 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
At the Utah game, I had to sell an extra reserved seating ticket I had. It was a great seat. I paid over $50 for it. How much did I get for it outside the gate - $20 after a couple dozen rejected offers.

USU - these are the games (UofU/BYU)you should be rewarding the fans - not throwing the yellow flag.
Dave | 2:12 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
BYU is playing USU out of respect for the wishes of Lavell Edwards. There isn't any other reasonable explanation.
Aggie Alum - BYU Fan | 2:21 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
I loved going to USU. I love that their b-ball team is so successful. But I grew up watching and rooting for the Cougs and no matter where you end up going to school Cougar football is a tough habit to break. So good luck to you Ags - after this game. I hope you steal a game from Fresno or BSU but I'm afraid I'm rooting for another shutout Friday as that may be what it takes to keep the Cougs from falling in the polls after playing one of the bottom 5 teams in the country.
Charity | 2:28 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
Utah and BYU playing USU is a charitable donation, a handout to those who are down on their luck. Aggies fans should be happy that the big boys will even put them on their schedules. The reality is that for BYU and Utah it is not a rivalry, more like a scrimage.
RE: Charity | 2:35 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
Hi Charity, you call it a scrimage. i dont know if i would even call it that. BYU's second and 3rd string can win this game. wait and see.
It's not all about football... | 2:58 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
and the discussion to drop to a lower division is out of the question. We'll come back, we are already beginning to see some progress ie, increase in scholarships, donations from alumni and stadium improvements. We will not take any suggestions from the likes of BYU or Utah fans. Keep your opinions to yourselves.
RE: Georgetown | 3:03 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
The Big Sky doesn't allow affiliate members. You have to have all the Big Sky sports or they don't let you in.

Also, the Big Sky would not add a team for football. Right now, the conference has the perfect number (9) for football scheduling. You have eight conference games and three or four non-conference games, allowing you to have money games against FBS opponents, as well as games against FCS schools from other programs that will build your playoff resume.

If the Big Sky would break its policy and add affiliate members (which it won't) then it would be for all the sports in which you play two games a week. Right now, with an odd number of teams, the Big Sky doesn't have travel partners (like the MWC), which means a nightmare for scheduling, especially in basketball, where you have games on three or four nights a week and no guarantee that your travel to say, Montana, will let you play Montana State on the same trip.
Dave | 3:37 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
so where are all you zoobies during basketball season when the Aggies own you and your little friends on the hill? Seems like you're all making up some lame excuse about why the Aggies dominate you. A trip to the big dance is old hat for the Aggies, nobody in Logan is surprised when the Aggies are in the dance, but it's a major deal for the coogers to just make the dance once every ten years so when the Aggies WIN on Saturday all of us Aggies will have 12 months of OWNING you zoobers. Ha Ha, can't wait til Friday night!!!!
Mr. BYU | 3:39 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
Sorry Dave...not happening...USU is going down BIG TIME! I'll bear my testimony to that fact!
realist | 3:49 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
As long as BYU comes to play football instead of a good ole fashion game of "pass", BYU will dominate all facets of this game. The only reason i believe it will not be a shut out is because BYU is going to continue with their charitable ways (playing USU at USU - pure charity). In the 4th quarter BYU will allow the lowly ags to score a "freeby".

final Score
BYU 45
USU 6
(The cougs will block the extra point) ;)
