I'm not a skateboarder but this makes no sense to me! Noise ordinances are NEVER enforced. I live on a busy street and the LOUDER THAN LOUD motorcycles and trucks are at it all night long! These are the same health police that outlawed smoking in the parks, (but they haven't found any police yet who have the time to deal with it)
LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE! Especially in their backyards!

Glad to hear they suspended the ordinance, surely there is a way to accommodate this particular use of private property.

If you lived by a ramp, you wouldn't think it was
so great. The noise is terrible!!!!!!! for us as neighbors.

I like how rule number 2 on the skate ramp in the photo is "Safety First: Wear Your Helmet", and yet, where's Dad's helmet?

I agree with poster #1.

There are cars with LOUD stereos and motorcycles going up & down my street all night long, but no-one ever enforces any laws pertaining to this.

I personally do not think ANY skateboard ramp can compete with these, noisewise...("Terribly destructive", indeed...)

What a stupid rule

it's better to have a skateboard ramp next door than a garage band. (-:

I'm sure there are some things you do that bother your neighbors as well.

I think the solution is to talk to your neighbors and work out a plan. Discuss times when you'd like it quiet and I'm sure they would do their best to accommodate you. I know a few of my neighbors would rather just call the police instead of just knocking on my door. That's how silly ordinances like these get passed because nobody is will talk to their neighbors.

If they are going to ban backyard ramps, I think they should build a skate park within skating distance to everybody. My nearest skate park is 4 miles away. A little too far for my kids to skate there. I'd like to suggest attaching them to every lds church ward. That way, they would be close to everybody.

When I'm in my house and somebody is skating my ramp, I can't even hear it, and that is in my OWN backyard. If a window is open, I can hear it, but if I'm watching tv or something, I don't even notice it. If I was trying to sleep, that might be annoying, which is why I don't skate past 9:30 ever. I skate 2 maybe 3 times per week and now that the summer is winding down it's even less. So, anonymous/fed up (pretty sure you're the same person), unless your neighbor skates constantly and late at night, you're just being ridiculous.

Actually, I own a ramp. And it would be kinda nice if I lived by one too, I kinda get sick of mine sometimes. I wouldn't mind having another one that I could skate from time to time.

You sound kind of like my neighbor, he's kind of a wuss too. I totally agree with Johnny Utah #9. One night I'll admit I was skating a bit late (because the ramp was new and we were still excited about it, it was maybe 10:15) when my neighbor just came out screaming and then accused me that I'd been doing it every night, which I hadn't been doing at all, it was a one time deal and I haven't skated late since. If he would have just explained to me that he was annoyed and wanted us to stop, we would have gladly stopped and I would have respected him. Since he acted in the manner which he did, I just can't stand the guy. I know I was wrong for skating late that one time, but still, he could have acted more like an adult about it. Otherwise I feel I have been very reasonable and considerate.
Way to go DAD... nice Rules | 2:37 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Did you see the picture and the list of rules on the side of the ramp... Let see...
WEAR A HELMET...
Do you see the DAD wearing a helmet? Teach your Sons by example and wear a helmet DAD.

Skateboard ramps now but what’s next….basketball hoops, pools, kids playing, family/friends gatherings? All in which can be noisy but we deal with as neighbors. Living life makes noise so we all need to show patience and neighborly understanding. Keep the ban lifted!

p.s. Rick, wear your helmet as I know not only did your mom tell you that you can’t get wet today but she also told you that you cannot have a crushed cranium either.

I love the law and I love democracy. It is great to see that certain administrative agencies are in fact concerned about the public health (as evidenced by the now-suspended regulation). It is better to see how responsive the department was to the backlash from the regulated public (as evidenced by the Board suspending enforcement of the regulation until staff analyzes the issue more thoroughly). We will have to wait to see how this turns out. One thing for certain, those on both sides of the fence will end up with a regulation somewhere in the middle. I love the USA! Skaters, keep being passionate! Neighbors, keep making your arguments! People, let your voices be heard!

I know, I know, I wasn't wearing my helmet.

I built my ramp with good cooperation from my city (zoning and building dept.) When I found out about the ban I was very troubled. To me it wasn't so much about the ramps themselves but even more the right to our property and freedom. A rowdy person can be disrespectful with anything or any activity.

Some rules are great for HOA's but not for an entire county with over 1 million people.

for me - I respect my neighbors and have enforced a strict code of behavior and hours of use out of respect for the people around me - FOR ALL OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES.

I was assured that our local agencies are working as designed - to represent the people, and not just a small segment pushing to limit freedom from annoyance. For a few days I was thinking that Salt Lake was turning to socialism!
