Sometimes our nation needs to learn lessons and Obama might just do the trick.
Erratic in hos love of country | 12:50 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Senator McCaskill said of McCain's behavior, "One day, no bailout. The next day, a bailout. One day, I'm suspending my campaign. The next day, I'm not," and Senator Feinstein said of the same behavior "I thought John McCain was very erratic in how he behaved,"
Erratic is an understated way of describing McCain's political maneuvering and his "campaigns" attacks on Obama's character. McCain's dishonesty, deception and inability to speak to the American people in a dignified manner is shocking to those of us who love our country and who have "always been proud of our country." We must never forget John McCain finds it hard to even be "proud of his country."
There are times when I have been "really proud" of my country and other times that I haven't been but I have always been proud and never find it hard to be "proud of my country" and I'm offended when someone of McCain's character suggest that it is hard to be proud of a country that has blessed our lives and the lives of many.
So to paraphrase McCaskill "One day, proud of his country. The next day, not proud of his country,"
Shame on McCain!

Wow - Sarah Palin's comments on Obama associated with a domestic terrorist really slay me. Years ago a friend of mine sat next to Ted Bundy during a lunch break at the U, does this make her sympathetic to serial killers?
Another friend gave a dollar to that goof ball who kidnapped the Smart girl, does that make his a cohort to madmen and kidnappers and rapist?
McCain is starting to lose it!

"Wow - Sarah Palin's comments on Obama associated with a domestic terrorist really slay me. Years ago a friend of mine sat next to Ted Bundy during a lunch break at the U, does this make her sympathetic to serial killers?"
Let's not forget that Ted Bundy was a volunteer for many Republican campaigns and was active in his own community. Because of that he came into contact with many people and associated with them in many areas.
That doesn't mean they were best friends or that they would agree with what Bundy did. You cannot choose whom you associate with while serving in communities. Does service in the Utah Legislature with unethical people mean you agree with their conduct? So how does serving on the same community boards make Obama friends with Ayers?
"Another friend gave a dollar to that goof ball who kidnapped the Smart girl, does that make his a cohort to madmen and kidnappers and rapist?"
On a sarcastic note. Yes it does! He gave money to him and therefore he's to blame for what he did but on a more serious note. Only idiots believe people are guilty by association.

Actually Obama had his "coming out party" to celebrate his entry onto the political scene at William Ayers house. Scary. The same campaign that Obama had EVERY SINGLE other candidate running against him thrown off the ticket through legal maneuvering.
If that's the kind of Politician people in this Country want then they deserve what they'll get.

How sad to see the two "main Candidates" slam each other just to get into the precidency and the sad thing is that neither Obama or McCain would do any good for this country. Both are out of touch with our reality and there are trying to feel that they care for us but in reality neither deserve to be the U.S.President. Both are not qualify to hold the important position. As independent my vote is not going to be for them, whom ever wins will be a one term president, how sad I feel because I love this country.
Let's focus on the issues | 2:03 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
I completely disagree with Lieberman. We've got to stop polarizing each other & start working together. This has to stop. There are too many important things going on. As McCain himself said, there are times when we can reach across the aisle for the betterment of the country ... this is without a doubt one of those times, considering the enormous financial crisis that our recent financial bailout will not solve... certainly we can participate in a civil, lively, & respectful exchange of ideas (such as we almost saw in the last debate) during the campaign... the American people really dont like these types of attacks from either side. They are not a way to win votes - they simply make people hate politics. I really thought that McCain (a man I have admired for years for his campaign reform efforts) would be above this. How about getting back to a little healthy idea exchange on how we are going to solve our country's problems.

Someone ought to offer a $10,000 reward to any reputable person who worked or even knew Obama prior to 1994. Who is he? Where did he come from? The other three - McCain, Palin, Biden - we at least know where they were and what they were doing. Obama is the biggest mystery I have ever seen. He has no family or friends campaigning for him or even vouching for him. The acquaintances we do know about - Wright, Ayers, and Rezko, etc., are dubious at best. Has anyone heard of "Korihor"? - talked a good talk alright!
Why are people ignorant? | 3:34 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
the kid,
"Actually Obama had his "coming out party" to celebrate his entry onto the political scene at William Ayers house. Scary."
Don't be ignorant. William Ayers was a member of his community who hosted a candidate open house. Most likely he was either the precinct chair or another precinct officer or volunteered to host the meeting. Obama more than likely had no idea who the host of the meeting was prior to attending. I've hosted such meetings myself and I'm sure the candidates had no idea who I was before attending since the first time I met them was the meeting.
"The same campaign that Obama had EVERY SINGLE other candidate running against him thrown off the ticket through legal maneuvering."
You fail to mention that it was legal to do so and that the people on the ticket were the ones breaking the law by trying to remain on the ticket.
"If that's the kind of Politician people in this Country want then they deserve what they'll get."
The kind of politician who believes the law is more important than personal ambition? Because that is what it is.

This article clearly demonstrates what ticks me off most about both of these gentleman. Both couldn't care less about the American people and getting us through this crisis. It is all about politics and the crisis is nothing more than another excuse for condeming each other.
When and where will we find people to lead this country who actually care about the country. The American people nominated these two gentleman and the American people will pay the price no matter which is elected. How very sad that we could not nominate someone who actually cares about the country. Does such a person exist within our political system?

Speaking of dishonesty, deception and lies, those who are conducting a reality check of Joe Biden's debate allegations regarding John McCain's stand on various issues, found in his charges no less than ten provable outright lies and five assertions which were arguable. Yessiree, Joe followed the Obama game plan obediently as a subservient VP candidate would be expected to do, that is, tell any half-truth, advance any misrepresentation, make any spurious promise and tell downright lies to advance the B.O. agenda--which is, win at any cost.

Kimley,
"Someone ought to offer a $10,000 reward to any reputable person who worked or even knew Obama prior to 1994."
Who defines what is "reputable?"
How about his professors, employers, colleagues and many others who knew him personally, professionally and politically? Do they count? Or do we need some member of Congress or some other reputable person?
"Who is he? Where did he come from? The other three - McCain, Palin, Biden - we at least know where they were and what they were doing."
We know everything about Barack Obama that there is to know. We know where he went to school, where he worked, what offices he held and so on. He is as well known as John McCain, Sarah Palin and Joe Biden who before they ran were some Senator from Arizona and Governor from a state we call Alaska.
"He has no family or friends campaigning for him or even vouching for him. The acquaintances we do know about - Wright, Ayers, and Rezko, etc., are dubious at best. Has anyone heard of "Korihor"? - talked a good talk alright!"
That's it. You are a blasphemer. Use the Book of Mormon again you lying hypocrite.

I thought "Stop hijacking my faith you fake's" response hit the nail on the head. I hope that Brokaw can control this "Towne Meeting" and keep McCain on the subject and not let him wonder off into attacks on anyone's character. He's got his own to worry about. Keating and the S&L bailout with Keating stating that of course he expected his money to buy influence, cheating on his first wife and beding a womanizer while married for some 7 to 9 months before leaving her. Now, that sounds like real character to me.

If only idiots believe people are guilty by association, Obama and his supporters are all idiots who are tirelessly working to paint McCain's candidacy as a third term for George Bush. Are't you idiots (by your own definition) guilty of guilt by association? Most rabid zealots do not recognize their own contradictory behavior.

Sometimes these comments remind me of children arguing and of course each one of them have to be right!
I don't mind listening to an opposing view (in fact that is why I read this column - hoping to learn new facts and idea) - but - the harshness and name calling of some comments are so immature it sometimes makes it hard to get through them all. Is is totally impossible to treat each other with respect on these boards. It would be a nice challenge to try -

Ummm... | 6:53 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
to the above post, no. We're not making McCain guilty by association by saying he's a third term of Bush. His remarks and platforms, or lack of them lead us to know that his stance has no big difference than Bush. The factthat when you listen to Palin is exactly like listening to George (when she stays on topic) leads us to see what his platform is...just like Bush. The Republican ticket wants it both ways. They want to say they're nothing like Bush all at the same time as preaching to his choir.
Which leads me to one more thing: if McCain "has all the answers" and can "get the job done" how come he hasn't? Is he waiting until he's dictator like he says he wants?

Lieberman | 7:54 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
What a turncoat. I just don't get this jewish thing. Why is it that the U.S. has such a love fantasy with this nut-so country? I personally have never known of Israel doing absolutely anything for us. It seems that we just can't say or do enough for them. Why?
To Lieberman at 7:54 p.m. | 9:04 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
You ask why regarding the "Jewish thing." I'll tell you why. We support Israel with our treasure and encouragement because Israel is America's first line of defense against the tide of radical Islam in the form of Hezbollah and Hamas in that part of the world. To be blunt, I would rather Israeli soldiers die in defense of their country than my grandsons. Don't tell me they do absolutely nothing for us. Rubbish.
Grimble | 9:09 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
McCain's campaign has said outright that they need to change the subject from the economy. And up until about two weeks ago, McCain didn't care about the economy. (Why would he? It didn't affect him in the least.) That's why nearly 100% of McCain's ad buys right now are negative ads about his opponent, rather than positive ads about himself.
Also, McCain's trying to distract voters from his own October surprise: people are all of the sudden paying attention to his disastrous healthcare plan, and he KNOWS it's not going to go over well with the Joe Six-packs and hockey moms that Palin's been pandering to.
Namely, McCain wants to tax your employer-sponsored health care as part of your income. He says he'll defray this by giving you a $5000 tax credit. Problem is, $5k probably doesn't cover your annual healthcare premium, and if it does, it won't in a year or two. Worse, the tax credit goes directly to your insurance company, not to you. In other words, you pay the extra taxes, but don't see any of the tax credit.
McCain knows the outrage this is going to create. He'll do anything to create a diversion.

Congratulations, Grimble. You have the Demo talking points practically memorized. Instead of answering your outrageous allegations, I must tell you that before election day, the Great One is going to be thoroughly vetted. Of course, you will say it is a smear campaign but it is the American people's right, nay their duty, to learn the truth about the radical past,"pals" and agenda of the Great One. B.O. will be thoroughly vetted and his socialist agenda won't see the light of day because he won't be elected.
We have NO choice! | 9:40 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
If Americans could remember even 10 years back and think about things, they'd be so disgusted with the whole economy thing that they'd run both the republican leaders and the democratic leaders out of town! Both parties have been contributors to the economic mess we are in. The Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac situation is a mass of corruption and ill-advised social meddling in the housing market. The bailout of unwise banks is just more of the same. Many of the people who caused the mess are now advising candidates for president. If ever I wondered whether there really way any appreciable difference between the two parties, at the top level, I have seen from this election that there isn't.
Obama or McCain--neither one will be good for America. Both vote for similar, or even the same, huge increases in government spending and controls. The idea that Bush is or ever was a "conservative" or a constitutionalist is a joke, and always was. This election is a farce! No matter who wins, we, the American citizens and taxpayers, lose.

Wow Grimble... did you just transcribe Obama's radio ad? I'm positive that isn't a biased opinion at all. When the government gives you $5000 for your healthcare premium who do you think that is going to go to? Probably your insurance company... I'm glad Obama connected those dots for you.
No wait, let's socialize healthcare! Great idea Barack! That way the people running this war, the economy, road construction, the post office, the DMV, social security, the education system, etc. can be in charge of more aspects of our lives. Heck they're doing such a great job with those things, maybe they should be in charge of determining which medications are covered and which are not...

I would much rather have a 5,000 tax credit for working Americans, and Medicaid-Medicare for non working Americans, than to have a Universal Health Care program covering anyone from anywhere.
It will also cost of an estimated 800 billion dollars per year. Some estimate it will cost a trillion + dollars per year.
Not to mention a government controlled program.
Remember the government controlled Fannie Mae and Fred Mac disaster-stock market?
And pray tell;
Where will they get the money?

You've all been sucked into exactly what the two parties want you to do. Divide and conquer. This election is so rancorous, I wouldn't be surprised if we are in a Civil War within 5 years. With Limbaugh and Co. on the right and Stephanie Miller, Michael Moore, Bill Mahrer, etc. on the left, we're getting a lot of exaggerations and half-truths that stir us up to anger - not against the politicians, but against each other.
Don't we all want pretty much the same thing? Peace, prosperity, to take care of our people and to make friends around the globe?
Frankly, the Democratic and Republican solutions are really not all that different. It's what you call Marketing 101 folks. When you need to sell a product, you make it appear as far different as possible from the competitor, even though they're really a lot a like.
Vote how you see fit, but after November 7, perhaps the winners can be gracious and extend a hand to the losing side? No one wants to see their side lose. But we all lose if the in-fighting continues.

Barack Obama's parents are deceased. His grandmother who helped raise him is elderly and unable to campaign. Barack has a half-sister who spoke at the Democratic National Convention. She is a high school history teacher and has campaigned for him. Her husband is a college professor. His mother's family was the family he grew up with. He has met some of his relatives in Kenya, but I don't think they are able to campaign for him, and wouldn't be well received if they could. Michelle Obama has campaigned tirelessly for her husband.

News Media Matters: Time for clarity
With little less than a month to go before Election Day, voters need the news media to cut through the clutter of the candidates competing sound bites and spin. They need clear and concise explanations of what, exactly, the candidates would do if elected. And they need the media to provide this every day, not just once in a while. Unfortunately, they aren't getting it. Instead, they are faced with countless news reports that simply repeat charges and counter-charges or obsess over minor details while failing to provide the big picture. News reports that obscure rather than clarify the candidates' proposals and positions. Both Obama and Hillary can be described as: prevaricators liar: a person who has lied or who lies repeatedly.
