As a member of the LDS church (a mormon), I thought the gentleman's perspective was a good one. It broke the debate down in an objective, straightforward way.

Reading this article makes me wonder, if other religions oppose the practise of baptism for the dead by Mormons, do they do so because they realize that it is correct doctrine and that the Mormons do have authority from God to make this neccessary ordinance binding in this life and the next?

If they do not believe that Mormons have God's authority what is the concern?

Eamon McCann seems to side with the Mormons. That's pretty cool. But even if he didn't, this article was very well written and researched and is fair-minded. A rare achievement for most journalists. I served a mission in Northern Ireland and Ireland and I appreciate the inquiring and candid wit of the wonderful people there.

If I read the bible correctly,in olden times they were baptizing for the dead long before we ever heard of a Morman.
Already being a memberI I feel as Sean does,What is the concern if its not a true doctrine.

"...if the Catholic bishops hold that the beliefs of the Mormons are pure baloney (as they must), and their rituals therefore perfectly meaningless, how can it matter to them what mumbo-jumbo Mormons might mutter over Catholic cadavers?

This quote from Mr. McCann's article says it precisely. Unless those other religions actually believe the LDS baptism for the dead ritual is acceptable in God's eyes, what's to worry about?

It isn't a matter of believing in lds authority, I don't, but respect for our dearly departed. The act you find so loving is emotionally painful and insulting to us non-members. I liken it to having a special ceremony to whiten a dead black relative because white is "superior." Sorry, but God isn't a mormon, a catholic, or any other faith.

The more important question is "What if Mormons are Wrong?" (They are indeed wrong.)

How so know What or Who God is or isn't?

But if there is a God then he MUST possess absolute truth, NO anarchy.

And there can only be one way, His way.

IE One truth, One church, One baptism.

Pretty simple isn't it.

NOW you must fight through the din of MAN'S untruths, and partial truths, to find God's Full truth, God's one and only true Church.

God's way is His way and does not involve a Church. God dwells in your heart, not in buildings and organizations made with men's hands. If you do not know that, then you do not know God.

Oh Brother...Sometimes I think people care more about their egos and being right. Then what truth is.
