5A Playoffs | 12:53 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
Region 1 should not have a problem with Region 3 in the first round. I don't believe Region 2 will have a problem with Region 4 either. But we have heard a lot from Region 4 on how they are as good as Region 2 (not a chance they are as good as Alta, so it's good they don't play them in the first round). But I don't believe they are as good as Brighton, Jordan, or Skyline either. So I expect Region 4's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams to lose to Region 2's 2nd, 3rd, & 3th place teams. So next Tuesday we will find out who is the better region and who are the better teams. Win every game Region 2, make it an all Region 2 semi-final.

There is one team that looks to take on the mighty Hawaks. Davis. They've played some pretty good teams up north. If anyone can topple the Hawks it should be them. As for region 3. As much as it pains me to say it. It is a weak region. But, One of these days I would like to see another team win it all out of that region. The last to do it was Bingham.
The same won't be said for the boys in that region though. You mark my words. Copper Hills is going to be very good this year. That whole team is intact from last year. They played all the power teams in Region 2 very close.

I realize Brighton's a very good team, but you've already got them locked in as the #2 from Region 2. I think Skyline might have something to say about that...if Skyline beats Brighton today (which they've done once this year), Skyline will be #2 and Brighton will be #3. So, in your parings, you should have Region 4 #3 playing at either "Brighton or Skyline" (Region 2 #2). You should add Brighton to your list (w/Skyline and Jordan) of possible teams to be the Region 2 #3 that will play at the Region 4 #2. However, if Skyline loses today and Jordan wins (vs. Hillcrest), the two teams will tie for #3, and since they split in head-to-head games this year, they'll probably do a coin flip to decide #3 & #4.

You've also got Syracuse listed as a possible #5 from Region 1 along with Weber. Weber had the #5 spot locked up even before yesterday's games, so even with Syracuse's win and Weber's loss yesterday, Syracuse is still not going to the playoffs. The good news for Syracuse is they won't have to play Alta, the bad news for Weber is they do.

I'm having a hard time understanding how timpview with three wins gets into the playoffs while one of the st. george schools is left out of the playoffs. Are there five teams from the same region in the provo area all in teh playoffs?
To 5A Playoffs | 9:14 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
Be careful 5A Playoffs: Region 4 should not be underestimated. Timpanogos beat Brighton in the pre-season and Lehi tied with Brighton for a 0-0 final score. Brighton was one of the ten teams that allowed Lehi a shut out. Lone Peak fairs well under pressure, Davis and Alta may make it through without difficulty but so should all three Region 4 teams in the 5A classification. A three-way tie for first seed demonstrates their abilities and strengths! Go Region 4! Timpanogos, Lehi and Lone Peak all Rock!

Coin toss determined Timpanogos #1 seed, Lehi #2 seed, and Lone Peak #3 seed. Go Region 4!

Timpanogos lost to Brighton, and Lehi didn't play them. I think you're confused with Bingham!

The playoff seeding is not fair at all. The top 16 teams do not essentially go to playoffs. Only four teams get to go to playoffs from each region. Except region 4 only gets 3 teams and region 1 gets 5 how is that fair. Plus region 3 has the worst teams in the state except for riverton; can someone please tell me how they are taking the top 16 teams to playoffs.
For example Hillcrest beat West Jordan 6-1 and Hillcrest isn't going to playoffs and West Jordan is. Taylorsville lost because they play in the toughest region in the state but they beat Hunter 2-0 in preseason Hunter is going also. Hillcrest for sure deserves to go they only lost to Alta 3-2 Region 2 is the best I mean Alta beat region 3's Number 1 team Riverton 11-1 what? And beat one of region 1s top teams Viewmont 7-0. Even Taylorsville didn't lose to them 11-1. Come on UHSAS. You have to come up with a better w ay to do playoffs whether it is just you take every team and make one more round of games or something but it is unfair right now.

Davis is takin it this year!
Timpview 3-9-1 | 10:39 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
Is this record for real or a mis print? How in the world does a team 3-9-1 make it to state? Only in Utah! That is bad. The state needs to look at this set up. Anyone else have problems with this? No other state would have it like this.
Not So Fast | 10:57 a.m. Oct. 8, 2008
FYI...Since I haven't seen a score for the Layton at Fremont game yesterday, I just called and confirmed with both schools and it seems that Layton beat Fremont 2-1. That puts Layton as the #3 team from Region 1 and will play at Bingham in the first round. Viewmont is the Region 1 #4 and will play at Riverton in the 1st round.
Shock the World! | 12:34 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008
C'mon Weber. Shock the World. You've had a under achieving season finishing 5th but you all know we should have finished in the top 2. Bring it all together this week and play your best game ever vs. Alta. Play em tough early, score first and who knows?
Re: Region 2 fan | 1:12 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008
Life isn't fair. No system is perfect. Win in your region and you will advance. Some regions are tougher than others but that could change from year to year. Region 1 gets 5 teams because they have 8 teams in their region; it doesn't mean they are the best region (not even close to it) but they play more games that matter. Viewmont took fourth in region 1 and that hardly means they are one of the best teams in the region.

Pretty Fair | 3:11 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008
Despite the fact that timpview made it to the playoffs, i still think they sort of know what they're doing. The teams that do well in their respective regions are rewarded. Instead of looking at the number of teams from each region in the playoffs, look at the percentage. Approximately 2/3, or 66% of the teams in each region go to the tournament. Without divvying playoffs spots equally to each region, what would be the point of having regions and classifications altogether? That's why region 9 only has 2 teams in 4A tourny.
anonymous | 3:13 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008

RE DHS DARTS & Cheapseat, DHS Don't be too quick to say you're going to take state. Cheapseat, I agree if there's any team out there besides Alta with a chance to take state it's Davis. May the best team win and good luck.

5A Bracket Update: Just spoke to Hunter High School and they lost the coin flip with West Jordan. So, West Jordan is the Region 3 #3 team playing at Fremont in the first round, while Hunter is the Region 3 #4 team playing at Davis.
Mike | 4:06 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008
It is sad because Mtn. Crest is a lot better than Timpview this year, but region 5 only gets 4 teams and region 7 gets 5! Instead of changing which region gets 5 teams every other year, I think they should have the 5th place region 5 team play the 5th place region 7 team and the winner gets the Wild Card playoff spot.
Not So Fast | 4:07 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008
The only 5A playoff spots left to be determined are the #2 & #3 teams from Region 2. We know it will be Skyline and Brighton, we just don't know yet who will get the #2 seed. That outcome is being decided right now as Skyline is playing at Brighton even as I type. The winner will be the Region 2 #2 team, and will host Lone Peak (Region 4 #3) in round one, while the loser will be the Region 2 #3 team and will to travel to Lehi. A tie favors Brighton.
Even if Skyline loses and Jordan wins today (vs. Hillcrest), they'll finished tied for the #3 spot, but since Skyline beat and tied Jordan in their two head-to-head games this season, Skyline owns the tie breaker (no coin flip needed). So, despite the pairings shown in this article, Jordan has no chance to be #3, meaning they're already locked in as the Region 2 #4 that will travel to Timpanogos in round 1.
(This is a correction to my first post today which stated that Jordan could get the #3 spot, I had incorrectly assumed a split in their 2 earlier games against Skyline.)

Region 4 good - not great | 4:44 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008
For the past several years, Lone Peak has been the beast from Utah County. In 06 they had the championship robbed from them on a missed call against Brighton. The next two years they lost to a better Alta team - although by only 2 points. This year Lone Peak has good but not the great players of the past and I expect they will probably bow out fairly soon in the playoffs. Timpanogos is probably playing the best but still won't match up against Alta. Lone Peak also has an injury to their best player (ankle) so that will also hurt their chances.
Not So Fast | 7:55 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008
The final two 5A playoff spots have been nailed down as Skyline beat Brighton 1-0 today to claim the Region 2 #2 spot and will host Lone Peak (Region 4 #3) in the first round. Brighton is the Region 2 #3 seed and must travel to Lehi (Region 4 #2) for their round one match-up.

region 4 | 9:52 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008
anyone else think its stupid they decide seeding by a coin flip. Goal differental would be a lot better i think
Tough | 10:58 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008
Region 4: i think the goal differential is the best deciding factor as well, coin flip is childish. This year's playoffs will be exciting. Region 1 and 2 look scary, Region's 3 and 4 have maybe one good team or two, but anything can happen now.
Region 3 fan | 11:09 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008
To Region 2 fan. Enough on the weakness of Region 3 in soccer. Each part of the valley has their strengths
in different activities. On the west side the boys and girls who are afraid of the ball play soccer. The best athletes play baseball and softball. How are those head to head softball and baseball games working out with Riverton, Bingham, and T-Ville.(region 3 next year) It is as one sided as soccer is for you. But, you can thank those overpaid club coaches for much of your success.

Hey "region 4" and "Tough", In the 5A playoffs pairings there were two sets of coin flips. One was done to decide the #1, #2, & #3 seeds for Region 4 which worked out to be Timpanogos, Lehi and Lone Peak, in that order. If you would have used goal differential to decide it, the result would have been the same (Timp 3.53, Lehi 2.56, Lone Peak 1.93).
In Region 3 a coin flip was used and West Jordan got the #3, while Hunter is #4. Goal differential would have reversed these two seedings as Hunter has a .47 diff, while West Jordan has a -.94.
All other 5A seedings were decided on the field in Region play.

Goal Differential | 9:44 a.m. Oct. 9, 2008
I agree that their needs to be a better way to break a tie but I am not sure goal differential is the way to go. I am talking about blowing out a team for tie breaker purposes. The top 3 teams in region 4 took thier shots at Spanish Fork. I know Lone Peak could have scored 15 in the last game but chose to play alot of J.V. players and work the possesion game insead of humiliating a poor team that still worked hard for thier coach. I would be in favor of a cap. Lets say a team wins by 6. That would be the limit. Not a fantastic system but better than the one in place and better than a total goal differential.
Looking forward to a great state tournament with potential upsets all-over the place.

Tie Breakers | 11:32 a.m. Oct. 9, 2008
Lest anyone think Lone Peak was the only team to back off when the game was out of reach vs Spanish Fork. Timpanogos pulled their starters and played the majority of the 2nd half of both games with only 8 or 9 players plus the keeper.
I agree, if yoiu make goal diff the tie breaking criteria then you'll have teams intentially pouring it on to increase the margin of victory.
Perhaps a better tie breaker would be to compare goals allowed in region play, that way you're comparing results against all of the same opponents, and then if needed you could compare number of shutouts in region as a next level of tie breaking criteria.

Hawk Fan | 10:06 a.m. Oct. 11, 2008
To their credit, Taylorsville is much improved this year over last. They started the season 5-0 but were unfortunate to play in the toughest region top to bottom in 5A. They would have made the playoffs if they had competed in Region 3 like they will next year. I noticed that when Alta played them they were starting several freshmen and several more sophomores.

ya viewmont came in 4th in their region but they also beat davis....thats all that really matters because, ya they are a young talented team. so this could go anyway..i think the teams that'll be close are alta brighton viewmont and davis....
vhs #17, #26! | 6:31 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
i agree with HM. those are definitely the top 4 teams, davis being young, viewmont with experience, alta with talent, and brighton beating alta. let the games begin and bring it on snitches!
Re: hm. and vhs #17, #26 | 11:08 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
You two should look at a 5A bracket sometime. Davis and Brighton are in the same bracket and will meet in the quarterfinals if they both win tomorrow.
The top 4 teams in the state are Alta, Davis, Timpanogos, and Lehi although I definitely wouldn't count out Brighton, Skyline, and Lone Peak. Viewmont will not make it past the winner of the Skyline/Lone Peak game.

Region 3 fan. I just read you post. Those are fighting words you said. FYI I have 3 teenagers that play soccer. One of them could play any sport they wanted. From Tennis to Basketball, Volleyball to Football. He is a pure athlete. One of them started as a Varsity player as a freshman. Don't tell me Soccer players aren't athletes, when most of the baseball players couldn't make it 10 minutes on the pitch with the boys soccer team. That's field to you. They'd get hammered.
Baseball and Softball are for fat people that don't want to run. All you have to do is look at the softball chicks to know that. You have no clue what an athlete is. I'll bet you've never even been to one soccer game. Don't say something your clueless about. "Softball and baseball players are athletes" Whatever Region 3!
