The Leonardo used to be the Salt Lake Public Library if memory serves. And we were told that we needed a new library largely because the seismic upgrades of the building were too expensive. So, $73 million later we have the snail, and we are still trying to find a use for the old building (apparently seismic upgrades for a science center are less than for a library).

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel they have been sold a bill of goods?

"Were that same election held today, we likely would caution against voting for some of the other proposals, as well..... Despite years of a strong economy, organizers of the hands-on museum, which would reside in the old city library, have had trouble raising enough money privately to cover the rest of the costs of renovation and construction".

Hmmm, this quote could be used against the 08 zoo bond as well. The zoo has had problems raising money for their capital campaign over the last few years, despite a strong economy. It will be interesting to see if the Deseret News will apply its own logic to the zoo issue and NOT indorse the zoo bond.

Not only should voters beware of funding The Leonardo, they should focus their money on things that will help stabilize the economy. This is not a time to be funding remodeling projects like that of the zoo, or creating new bonds for other "arts" categories. We need to all buckle up and prepare for a rocky road ahead.

I like the zoo | 12:17 a.m. Oct. 10, 2008
I don't take issue with the zoo but new programs are crap. I didn't like Discovery Gateway-it is lame. The old museum was based on science. The new one is based on sharing germs. And I don't like the idea of an aquarium or The Leonardo Center. Let's improve what we have but not add new projects. Go Aviary. Let's make it better. But down with Leonardo. If there is enough interest in it, they won't need public financing.

Seems like the Leonardo might be a good thing for the city. But we should always be very careful with tax dollars. People should learn more details about this, where can one find the legal opinion from the city? Is it online somewhere?
