In the past some people have questioned why I care so much about this issue. The answer is because this is an issue that involves marriage which is a sacred institution.

On the adoption issue, even the LDS Church's ability to run adoptions may be ended. This would be very sad. There are two reasons.

One is that the nature of the California ruling creates a right to marriage instead of the rulings overturning laws against inter-racial marriage which only ended discrimination against people based on race, but had no effect on the promotions and encoragements that recognizing marriage involved. This new right means that any actions that limit the full benefits of marriage become suspect.

The second reason this is a new threat is that rules against homosexuals involve "sexual orientation" charges while rules against the same behavior by un-marriaed people do not bring such a positive cry.

There is a large number of people who periodically seek to destroy the work of LDS Family Services. We in no way will be helped by giving the enemies of LDSFS more amunition.

I was really excited about the Preserve Marriage link.

However at least the one on the mormon times article sent me to a website devoted to bringing the issue of marriage to a vote in California.

It appears that there is a need to get the right link in place. I hope this can be achieved because I really do want to see the statements by Elder Bednar.

Do not start to accuse the church of getting involved incorrectly with politics, it is legal and constitutional for churches to take a stand on social issues. Churches are not to endorse a candidate, if they want to keep their tax exempt status, in my 54, some of those early ones I don't remember, but in my life, I never ever once heard an endorsement for a candidate from my local to the highest leadership. Even when we have LDS members running for high political offices, such as President of the United States, I never heard and endorsement. So know that what the church is doing on this issue is legit and right.

I wish that the mormon's tax free status would be revoked because of this . They are getting into politics far too much
Politics != Democracy | 8:19 p.m. Oct. 9, 2008
The Church is not getting into politics, it is exercising its right to encourage its members to participate in democracy.

Remember that people? Democracy? Its when public policy is set by a majority of people with like minded values.

Having public policy set by a handful of judges that overturns the will of the people is an assault on democracy and turns our country into a judicial oligarchy (that means rule of the few, for those who don't know).

Aaron, I suppose you won't the Catholic and evangelist Christions to loose their tax free states as well. They to are fighting to have prop 8 passed. Did you or anyone ell know that? All we are trying to say is that marriage is a sacred institutions ordained my God and we have a right to say so, just as you have a right to disagree. You say the Mormons are getting involved in politics to much, so tell me how so? This is the only issue the church has taken a stand and that is on marriage. Plus if prop 8 fails then we and anyone ells would be forced to preform same sax marriage, were is our right to say 'NO"? it is gone if prop 8 fails. Just as you have the right to fight for what you believe is right we have the same right to fight for what we believe is right.

When the church and others claim that the supreme court ruling in California somehow interferes with the "will of the people" are they saying they do not believe in the doctrine of Separation of Powers?

If the "will of the people" was important to the church, it seems to me that if Prop 8 fails the church will recognize same-sex marriages because that is the "will of the people". I have my doubts. The worldwide LDS church conveniently keeps silent about how they do not recognize the "will of the people" in other states and countries where equality in marriage is the law.
